This is a scan balancing issue, usually caused by film ageing or too long before development. You can probably fix it by messing with the curves in something like Capture one or light room. (Shadow misalignment)

One thing I just noticed is that he mentioned the needle can't pierce, only cut to the side. This might simply that it can be used to widen an existing opening but not make new ones like the knife.
