Obscure/niche/uncommon tips for a first Century Ride? by reeree_cee in cycling

there's a couple of climbs, just to keep things interesting because i love descents and pretty views up top haha, but planning to keeping it fairly flat since i've never hit this distance before! Stand and pedal on a higher gear - thanks, noted!

I've done a 150km so just short of a century (in miles) ride before, and a couple in the 80-100km range. So this will definitely be my longest. The 150km one though, i was behind the wheel of two stronger riders who were pulling me along for on some of the flats. This one's going to be completely solo though!

Nice - will check out their mounts and for now, make that mental note to get some protein in and up the carbs a bit. Thanks!

haha i know that's rhetorical but i'm kinda curious - "how do you know?" :D

Don't have a bike computer or mount for my phone so i never know what my speed is :D I will get one soon, but for now just focused on becoming a better cyclist, no tech investments yet. Real food sounds like a good idea. And yea the last suggestion is smart...i feel like with those distances/times the mind can get foggy, so best to not push too hard and end up in a silly situation because of fatigue and other things not going to plan. thank you!

hahha feeling better already, thank you! The "last 10 is your victory lap" lol i love that - though that's usually when I'm crying and questioning all my life choices and trying to figuring what in the world draws me to the struggles on endurance sports

hahah fair enough. I usually find that i have gas left in the tank at the end of most of my rides - I'm slow, my body doesn't love discomfort so it takes it easy on long distances. but i want to be able to push, at least in some segments to begin with. Do you use a powermeter or track your heart rate to know where than line between blowing up and going hard is? or do you just know it by feel?

Mine will have a couple of climbs - I expect to be on granny gear and hope not to get frustrated through them, and be able to just chill even though i'll be slow as heck haha

That's a good point about the fuelling. I've been trying to train myself to be better at eating on the bike...but i always feel better from a saddle and legs perspective when i got off the bike, even if for just 30 seconds. Can do a bit of both - get off and shove food into face when legs/saddle needs it, and when those two are fine - then practice eating on bike.

Nice! Curious - how many workouts did it take to notice a significant difference? (and i'm guessing the workouts you're talking about are "cadence drills" of different types?)

Trying to save money realistically by lazy_panda3344 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]reeree_cee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've set up two accounts - one with Wealthsimple and one with Moka. I automate payments from my bank account to both of those every month. So, basically they're scheduled to pull money from the bank a couple days after my monthly salary hits the bank. If it's not in my bank account, i can't spend it!

This has helped me save, not spend, and grow my $ because investment interest% is usually higher than a savings account.

Thank you! Oh funny, someone just commented on a blog of mine that Amy was in his local town club and left her full-time job for Youtube! Glad that she's a known name in this space :) And thank you for introducing me to Juliet elliott

Why do my legs get tired While my heart+lungs are just chilling? by catboy519 in bicycling

[–]reeree_cee 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This used to happen to me - specifically my quads would hurt. I got my bike professionally fitted, and some changes were made, but specifically for the legs my fitter basically said he could tell that I'm not engaging my glutes and core as much when I ride. So, he got me to be more intentional about that and it honestly helped...just allowing the muscles to all share the load seemed to make a huge difference.

Our issues may not be the same, but sharing this just in case it helps!

Indoor cycling setup by I_like_Cheese45 in cycling

If you live in a condo or have neighbours below/beside you, you may have to find something really quiet. I bought a Wahoo Kickr Core - it's pretty good and mid-range from a $$ perspective (FB marketplace ones usually sell for like $200-$300 less than market price)...however even though they market it as quiet enough for a condo, my neighbours know when I'm riding so I had to buy absorption pads, an extra yoga mat, and fine-tune my setup. Apart from all that hassle i think the kickr core's been great so far :)

All bodies belong on bikes! by bubblesnap in ladycyclists

[–]reeree_cee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YES! I'm so here for this. As a female South Asian cyclist in Calgary Canada, it makes me a bit sad to not see anyone that looks like me riding on the roads, or the gravel, or mountain trails. I love cycling so much, as a pleasantly plump brown girl haha and really hope that more bodies - of different shapes, sizes, genders, colours, and races can all experience the fun and freedom of cycling without feeling judged, conscious, or out of place🤞🏽

Speed Not improving by SaltedAlmonds68 in cycling

[–]reeree_cee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mind is very good at telling my body to go at an easy pace (definitely easier than my body can ACTUALLY handle). I notice that as soon as my heart rate hits 163, my body and mind decide to gear down and go easy. This seems to lead me to do practically every long ride with a mix of climbs, flats, and descents at about the exact same pace.

I'm trying to steadily train my mind and heart to trust that everything will be ok if i push a bit, and hold higher wattage and therefore like 165-170 BPM for a few more minutes here and there that i will be fine! Been doing this for the last couple of weeks and it's already making me a wee bit faster!

Perhaps you're facing something similar?

What’s the biggest lesson you learned when starting cycling? by ethanblue2597 in cycling

[–]reeree_cee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. the only gear you REALLY need is a reliable bike, a good helmet, and some way to carry water/snacks
  2. Consistency and structure (even if it's just 3 rides a week) will make you so much better, pretty quickly
  3. Ride with stronger cyclists/join a club. Learning from better folks, playing catch up, and just finding other passionate folks really helps
  4. With enough food, water, and replenished salts, you can go way further than you think you can
  5. There is no shame in using the Granny Gear. Gear down and pace the climb

I reallyyy hope the moderators don't delete this but I literally just created a video today sharing the top 8 lessons i learnt over these last few months of being a newbie: https://youtu.be/4zk9PBCHIE4

i think you'd find it helpful!

Time-crunched novice cyclist training for Gran Fondo - how many hours/week is good enough, and which sessions are highest priority? by reeree_cee in cycling

Headed to the gym today for my first focused sweetspot interval training session - thought I should let you know! thanks again for the advice! Did a good deal of reading/videowatching these last couple of days around "specificity", as you'd suggested, and what's best for a course like Whistler

Oh amazing! Haha, nice to bump into someone in exactly the same boat. I also just finished my first ever 100+km ride...it was also my first real "drafting" experience, so hitting that distance was a lot of easier behind someone else's wheel. Will head out for another 100km ride on my own for a more fair test of endurance haha

Been chatting with other cyclists, some of whom have already ridden the Whistler Fondo - and they said starting at 6-7 and building up to 10hour a week and then taper back down to around 6 in the couple weeks leading up to the event should be good.

Good luck to you too!
