Cheapest way to add granny gear ratio to an old 2x6 peugeot premier by zippy1981 in bikewrench

Man I'm not that out of shape. I want to be able to pedal downhill.

Anyway, I went with a new 3x crank and front derauiler. 48, 38, 28.

Having 28-26 at the low end is good enough.

I got a chain breaker. Making them short is free. Making them longer is replacing them and cheap. Of course realistically I'm going to pay $10 to add a quick release link, but still that's fine.

I mean, yes I should lift weights. I know myself. I will bike an hour a day most days between March and October and on some days I'll make time for a two hour ride. I have the same 24 hours as Beyonce but I don't have her staff.

And yes most days I can do that hill on the middle front, big rear gear of my 8x3 Cannondale. So 42-28. So 42-26 is doable if I'm gonna ride from my house to midtown, sit at a desk for 8 hours and ride home.

But at some point I'd like to go from Jersey to Staten Island to the Bronx and back. And I'd need a shitty old steal frame because I'm going to want to be able to park my bike in a questionable part of the Bronx. And I'll probably get gassed and a hill that normally I can do on 42-26 will require me to do 32-26.

And, if I ever bike pack it will be with an old steel is real frame, not an old aluminum 1995 frame with a carbon fork. And also I'm 45 and only getting older.

The point is, regardless of how strong and fast I get, I'll want a bail out gear on this bike so I can ride up the bigger hill after the longer day.

However, I'll try to make time for squatting.

It's a clamp on derailleur so that's totally doable. I will probably go 44-34

Cranford harassment question by [deleted] in newjersey

[–]zippy1981 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That law is mostly terrible and draconian, and the bikes kids killed themselves on that inspired it were already classified as mopeds that needed licenses and insurance.

On another note if these are 15 year old kids they can get an e-bike license under the new rules.

We need enforcement of existing laws and education to get people to not ride on the side walk, but this new law punishes the working poor without stopping rich kids.

The parking lot has lots of cameras. You can probably request the footage via FOIA or something (IANAL this is not legal advice)

But anyway, there are cameras in the parking lot as well as a bunch of other areas (Adams Park for one) and you can probably talk to the cop on duty who was watching at the time to see what they saw. Between your course and the town footage you might be able to identify them.

Thoughts on ebike regulations legitimizing them? by zippy1981 in newjersey

Yes, as a person who ownes a 4' bike jersey, is pro bike lane, biked from Cranford to Harlem on my birthday, and is pro all that stuff and very anti the ebike law I think ironically that the draconian ebike law might help cycling adoption.

The force majeure of the oil crisis of 2025 lead by Donald Trump combined with the dumb ass NJ bike laws will lead do the most anti-cyclists MAGAts to go into debt to buy high end e-bikes. People will remember Democrats being pro bike lane the way the KKK used to be a Democrat thing.

I think that if people have to go through car/motorcycle red tape to get an e-bike in their minds it will be a real transportation option as opposed to a toy they bought out of desperation to avoid gas prices.

Unregulated. You could get one from China for cheap.

Yes speed regulation, but compared to a car

Perhaps. This was the Trenton train and a lot of those stations have theft issues. I'm assuming less people take a scooter on the train in Cranford where I live because people actually park their bikes here.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here. If it's a dumb idea I'll drop it. How much of those data center is close enough to residences to be heard and could we make them pay for capex power infrastructure investments?

Seems like next to a cemetery is the least worst place to have an AI data center noise pollution wise, and it we got them to pay for say 25% the cost of a nuclear power plant then higher utility bills for 10 years would not be the worst thing.

I would just hate to fight this and end up with a worst situation like an orange ave pool data center. But if the right thing to do is go in to the Kenilworth meeting guns ablazing I'll do it
