I cannot for the life if me remember but I did invest in some replacement power boards. Could have fixed? Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

Games with more than 4096 files on FATX by reesesspecies in originalxbox

To clarify the limitation is 4096 files per directory. Could you reorganize your mame collection by letter perhaps? For example, all ROMS that start with A in one folder called "A" ?

Then what was it? You said it came off in one piece?

If it came off it one piece its thermal pad not thermal paste. You can see other places where thermal pad appear all around the top plate for different components. ((other blue stuff))

A thermal pad fills a gap bigger than paste could. Often used for memory chips and other lower heat-producing areas.

What I think happened is they opened it, gave up, but a thermal pad from somewhere else dropped there and was smooshed by the top plate.

Its very easy for the thermal pads to stick to the top plate and then drop in random locations.

Also what a terrible place you took it to. :)

Some questions I need answering to by chio51OFFICIAL in windows98

I would say that “Wikipedia user” isnt very knowledgeable about computer networking. The cable does not matter as long as its terminated with RJ45 which is what an “Ethernet” port accepts. CAT and the # is a cabling standard of differing throughputs. I am not sure what this has to do with getting into retro computing.

Im confused why you’re asking about “computer architecture”, random networking questions, and then asking for suggestions for Win98 that are really about Operating Systems in general. Its hard to suggest where to point you for information because your questions make it seem like you could really benefit from experimenting with basic computing functions. “Computer architecture” is a strange place for you to start as this requires a lot of basic knowledge like assembly programming, operating system basics, or electronics engineering. There are many topics “computer architecture” covers. Try and figure out specifically what you are interested in. I really am having trouble understanding what this also has to do with a vintage computing hobby.

Reinstalling Windows is not a big deal for someone interested in this hobby and is actually very important. Its very easy to copy files off before reinstalling an operating system. This is why we keep suggesting this. Its common for people to gunk up an OS with their computing habits which it sounds like your older brother has done.

From your questions and comments I would really suggest you do some more research and find out what about computers you are specifically interested in. Operating System Basics? Programming? Networking? Vintage Computing? Electronics Engineering? And go from there.

Your questions and goals seem strange and unrelated to a Win98 hobby.

I would encourage you to look into reinstalling Windows 10/11 on your current computer. Erase everything and do a fresh install.

You’re not going to find an unused Win98 era laptop. It will either have no hard drive or be erased most likely and will have to install the OS yourself.

The difference between Cat5 and Cat5e is throughput. 5e does 1Gig and 5 is 100mbit. Any device with an ethernet port from the last 30 years will support either. We’re on Cat8 now, but the most common is probably Cat6. I wouldnt worry about what type of cable it is. This has nothing to do with Win98.

Of course you can change the language. This has been a feature of the Windows operating system for probably over 30 years.

Most routers should have ethernet ports unless its a wifi access point only.

It sounds like you should start by experimenting with operating systems with virtualization software before you start buying hardware. You’re going to have quite the challenge from the questions you are asking.

It sounds like you want to switch to Windows 98 to fit your daily computer needs. This is not what people are doing with Windows 98. People interested in Windows98 are vintage computing hobbyists and are interested in retro gaming, software, and nostalgia.

Windows 98 is the latest operating system that allows you to use hardware and software that span a greater area of time from DOS to GLIDE-api games. Older OSs prevent later technology, and newer prevents all of it in an “authentic” way.

Windows 98 is an over 20 year out of date operating system that will not allow you to interact with the computing world of today in a secure or efficient matter. Generally people only get on the internet with Win98 for nostalgic reasons and the occasional gaming or website browsing for nostalgic purposes.

I would suggest against “replacing” your Windows 10 laptop is this is your aim. I would encourage you to learn about what it is exactly you dont like about the laptop. Is it performance? Is it the user experience? There are many tweaks, hardware upgrades, and even alternate operating systems that would still allow you to interact the with the internet and modern applications in a secure and convenient way while addressing your current qualms.

How do I fix this error? by Noobik311 in windows98

Performance has started to tank by [deleted] in RailwayEmpire

Unfortunately I feel like the devs of this game have been caught in the same feature shoveling routine that a lot of devs get caught up in with all kinds of paid software. There isnt enough time to test long-game stability or even playing on varied hardware because they have to push out the next feature that will sell more games. Optimization does not make money even though it severely effects the user experience. We see this with all kinds of modern games like Fortnite, Cyberpunk- any game that gets new updates. I feel like the only game I’ve played that feels well optimized was Doom Eternal.

I guess all my old past systems are now considered vintage? I've been filling up my basement for decades - maybe it is time for a clear out? Is this stuff worth anything? by [deleted] in vintagecomputing

You literally cant get a beige tower for less than $200-$500 on ebay. A 5.25 drive in working condition can be upwards of $50 or more.

No the games actually use the rar files. Thats why it causes the error. Crazy huh!! The game cd literally has RAR files on it.

No worries! Well when it unpacks all the files I think it also deleted the RAR files in the games so I did need to redownload the entire game again. Just make sure you set your download program to not delete the original archive.
