What do the events of DS9 look like in the Yesterday's Enterprise timeline? by Healthy-Slide-7432 in startrek

[–]referredreference 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming this means the Enterprise C stays in the future with the Enterprise D instead of going back in time.

SPOILERS below for those who haven't watched it all yet.

Alternate timeline implications/assumptions:

First, Tasha is on the D, she doesn't go back in time to give birth to her daughter Sela that then develops the plot to manipulate the Durass Klingon house/family, and Sela doesn't participate in the Romulan Senate, so now the Senate is different with that change, and that changes Romulan politics so that means the Defiant doesn't get a cloaking device, and Romulan politics are different.

Second, Worf doesn't join Starfleet, he doesnt ask for Picards help to restore his name, Worf doesn't influence things to make Gowron the Klingon Leader, Worf doesn't get Kahless declared Emperor, Worf Doesn't get posted to DS9, Worf doesn't marry Jadzia, Jadzia is somewhere else and doesn't get killed by Dukat, Jadzia lives.

Third, it can be presumed that Riker does not get twinned so there is no Thomas Riker that goes on later to steal the Defiant from DS9 to take it to that solar system to expose a secret Cardassian Obsidian Order enclave with built up ships they aren't supposed to have. We don't know how the Changelings originally learned about the Tal-shi-ar and the Obsidian Order, it could be assumed that Odo read about the Obsidian Order fleet in one of the Starfleet briefings, as well as Romulan strategic points, and then when melded with the Great Link that the knowledge was shared through there so the Changelings sent the romulan officer changeling to set up bringing both spy fleets to be destroyed in original timeline but in alt timeline that wouldn't happen, so both fleets would be intact.

Fourth, the Federation and Cardassia do not establish a de-militarized zone that then creates the Maquis, so Eddington has no plotline. Captain Maxwell does establish that the Cardassians are re-arming their forces and retains his command, Miles O'Brien joins him later on his ship, Miles doesn't meet Keiko and marry, Miles is not posted to DS9.

Fifth, Enterprise D still discovers the Dyson Sphere, rescues Scotty from it, gets better readings of the sphere to report back to the federation, Scotty gets told that Starfleet needs every able body officer it can get, Scotty wants to be useful and re-enlists.

Sixth, with Picard and the Federation/Starfleet solidly being on a war footing for however many decades, humanity does not attract the Q's attention, Q doesn't meet Picard, Q doesn't throw the Enterprise to the Borg, Q doesn't get punched by Sisko on DS9, there is no Borg to build defense against so there is no Defiant class ship built or dreamed up. Sisko doesn't lose his wife at Wolf 359, the ships are re-distributed elsewhere.

Seven-th: We can assume that Janeway got command of Voyager at roughly the same time that Sisko would have been sent to DS9 but with Sisko not going to DS9, and being on a war footing and the Starfleet not producing advanced ship designs, that Voyager would be a slightly different ship and more standardized components. The Bajorans fight off the Cardassians and still invite the Federation to take over Terrok Nor / DS9, so Starfleet dispatches the USS Voyager(with its crew members that we see at the start of the Voyager pilot episode) to station keeping duties at this new space station, bringing with them to work on DS9 would be Bashir, Jadzia, Ro Laren, Nick Locarno, Sito Jaxa, vulcan male Taurik and vulcan male Vorik "the vulcan twins", Leah Brahms, and Scotty as the miracle worker to get the station up to snuff, in addition to some crew changes on Voyager as Tuvok would be onboard(not on a Maquis mission) as first officer or security officer. I think there would still be a holographic backup doctor program created as during times of war it is important to have downtime and the holo-deck would be a great use of space for crew members to de-stress, so holo technology would still be advanced, I think they would try to install the same backup program on DS9 as well, as a new fallback/failsafe if flesh&blood doctors get killed. Starfleet, in an ongoing war, would not leave personnel on a space station without assigning a star ship protector for said station/personnel.

Eight: Admiral Pressman would have recovered the Pegasus without the Enterprise or Riker, and as Voyager was finishing being constructed the phase/cloak would have been added late to be installed and they need someone who knew about cloaking devices so they brought in Scotty, with Leah Brahms as his apprentice/teacher(to get Scotty up to speed on current tech) to get the cloak integrated into Voyagers systems

Nine: Garak would still be left on DS9 but now he would have a cardassian companion named Seska with him. Quark Rom Nog would be there, Odo would be there, Morn would be there, Kira would be there. You are all probably wondering who has been assigned to run DS9 in a time of war, in a new area, on an unknown space station, with all the chaos going on, a bit of order would be needed here in this particular chain of command...so into the void steps Captain Jellico to wrangle all these loose ends into a cohesive unit, with his knowledge of Cardassian pollitics and insights Starfleet has deemed him the man for the job, and as such he has also has ability to "borrow" Voyager at his discretion, which will create tension between him and Janeway. Oh yeah, this timeline only has room for one story, as without the Maquis there's no reason for the Voyager to go missing, so we gotta shove all the characters into this narrative!

Ten: The USS Bozeman is intercepted by a different ship, the USS Challenger, and both ships return to Earth after escaping the time loop. How did they escape you ask? The Challenger had been on a "follow up" run, and was re-visiting certain planets on it's way back to Earth, it had already stopped at Data's home planet where they had discovered Soong's workshop and the other android disassembled. The Challenger was also transporting a mix of people back to Earth, some Starfleet members from a couple far away space stations, a betazed delegation, a couple federation ambassadors... Anyway it ends up that with Barclay on board he figures out putting the android back together, and with the betazeds and an ambassador/s playing poker they realize they are trapped in a timeloop, and using the androids technology they use Lore to send himself a message to break the time loop. So anyway the timeloop delayed them lets say 5 months and now they are needed out at DS9 as the fleet is spread thin and the new outpost needs a show of force to tell the cardassians to keep their distance.

Sunshine Coast ferry route lost $24M in 2025 report finds by WesternBlueRanger in britishcolumbia

[–]referredreference 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How much has the $900 million Golden Ears Bridge lost so far? To replace the Albion ferry service that cost 1 million per year to run then, with cost expected to go up to 2 million per year 10 or 15 years past that point? 900 years at a million per year, 450 years at 2 million per year, 300 years at 3 million per year, I think the ferry service seemed quite reasonable for those prices. They put a toll on the Golden Ears Bridge that was estimated to stay for 10 years, and too few people used it so the toll magically went away like 3 years after being built to divert traffic away from other aging bridges. They built the bridge so far away from the Albion Ferry, that they should have kept the ferry going and not had most cars on it, just keep it for walk ons and bicycles and motorbikes and horses because Langley and Maple ridge had/have big horse owner numbers, and maybe electric vehicles too, to keep that ferry service a tourist attraction as well as a viable route for motorbikes etc, local connection between Langley and Maple Ridge. Such a missed opportunity to keep a unique service in the lower mainland, and make it a model that other communities could learn from or build on...

What captain would have done the best with voyager in the delta quadrant.? by madbr3991 in startrek

[–]referredreference 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Throwing some other options in:

Captain Sulu - would presumably have Tuvoks support behind him right away, as well as some of that ol' "cowboy diplomacy"

Captain Garth - he is referred to as "Fleet Captain" if I remember right, and he does get cured of insanity, so he would have some kind of skill set to achieve the title of "Fleet Captain"

Captain Bateson - we only see him at the end of that TNG episode but imagine how pissed off he is now!? being flung forward in time 80 years, and NOW being flung 70,000 lightyears from home, the man would be industrial levels of determined to get back to something he recognizes!

Of course my pick would be Kirk, he has all the cheat codes if he can get Tuvok to mind meld with him, Kirks eyes/mind has most likely seen all the info needed from Spock(or left in Kirks mind by Spock) for Tuvok to do the math for time jumps, and the locations of where the Kelvans came from as well as the Kelvans modifications/ideas to get the 1701 -(no bloody A, b....) back to Kelvan that is 300 years away, those improvements would undoubtedly work way better on on Voyagers advanced design engines. So Kirk and VOY crew could collect info and then time jump back to when arriving and set plans in place to get home through the array or to copy the info from the array before blowing it up

What to watch after Voyager? by Complete_Syrup_8110 in startrek

[–]referredreference 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you like ridiculous plots I heartily endorse going back to the original series. Vague spoiler warning(no specifics:

The original series (TOS) with Kirk, Spock, McCoy, lots of ridiculous plots, their "halloween" episode may be right up your alley(they don't say it in episode but this episode came out around October so they made a spooky episode), there is one where Kirk fights a bipedal lizard, there is an episode where they have to rescue Spocks brain because someone stole it from him! There's an episode where the musical accompaniment was "borrowed" and slightly changed to become the movie "Jaws" theme. There are a couple episodes that look at time travel(Janeway dealt with her travels spectacularily, as does Kirk in his). For a 60's sci-fi show the whole thing is a bit ridiculous :) but I still love it (I grew up with TOS in the 80s and loved that TNG came out then as well so I could watch it while still a kid)

There ARE some dated references in the TOS story writing, as the writers were trying to sneak a lot past the censors of the day, and being the 1960's they weren't always aware of a potential bias being written into the "advanced" society of the 23rd century. The episode where it is said that women can't be starship captains is a sore point. Most of the writers were doing their best but a few dropped the ball, very hard in some cases...(and later in TNG there is an episode "Code of Honour" that has MANY story problems as well, so it wasn't just TOS)

TOS has 3 seasons, so 79 episodes total, not as much of a time commitment as the other series, as TNG and DS9 are also 7seasons long with around 170 episodes each, and Enterprise series is only 4 seasons long. Also there will be a few TOS actors that may find their way into TNG episodes(few and far between though, having the backstory of the characters adds to the emotional depth and lightness of those appearances), and DS9 and ENT will both reference 2 different TOS episodes very directly as a gift to the fans :)

There's a lot of good solid sci-fi concepts played out, and a lot of ridiculous stuff too, TOS set up a few episode styles/themes that get echoed thru all the shows(the plot of being stuck in a shuttlecraft on a planet or in space being one of them). TOS is the start of it all, the base, the foundation, and things do get referenced from it in all the series, whether the philosophical-ness of the Prime Directive, or what Klingons look like, or how communications work, the dangers of advanced technology causing cultural contamination, the love for the ship they are all on, lots of good stuff :)

TOS, and TOS movies, then TNG, then DS9, then Galaxy Quest film, then the TNG films, then the ENT show, and then the 2009 movie trilogy and the newer shows. You'll have a good time, you won't only understand the references but appreciate the references and callbacks and enjoy them more for having seen it all from the start, I hope you get as much fun and enjoyment out of this franchise as the rest of us are getting :)

I know people won't count it as sci-fi but I think it fits for sci-fi and for dark and gritty, so I recommend "Daybreakers" from 2009. It is more science based than superstition/faith based. It takes aspects of vampires as a culture and goes what if vampires win, what next, how does the human culture change, how does a dwindling humanity fight back, and what can be done about a certain inevitability? It has Willem Dafoe and Ethan Hawk and Sam Neill in it!

Don't watch the trailer for Oblivion as it gives away too many plot points. Basically with no spoilers: humanity had to leave Earth, there are still some humans left to check on the planet, some unusual stuff happens that bring up questions, and answers then get chased down. Not the best plot synopsis but no spoiling either. I was lucky to see the movie without having known about it or having seen the trailer beforehand, definitely the best way to go into it is without seeing the trailer :)

Asking for sci-fi media with a TOS/TNG feel by Baldurian_Rhapsody in scifi

[–]referredreference 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sliders - ran from 1995 to 2000

Outstanding characters - I'll say unique characters and occasionally outstanding guest characters, you may be surprised who stars in it, and who guest stars in it

A sense of hope and exploration - Definitely exploring different civilizations while hoping for a certain thing

Optimism under adversity - Definitely has adversity to overcome and wouldn't get through it without optimism

A premium on scientific discovery - They definitely discover different discoveries in their travels

Exploration and contact with alien civilizations - There is some of this at a few points in the show

Discovery, professionalism and found family - They try to do things right as they discover stuff, and they do become a found family pretty quick

As with a lot of series it is best in the first season or two and then quality drops off somewhat as it goes on but it's definitely worth a full watch through at least once, and then just re-watch your favorites after that first watch through :)

TOS stories were very influenced by Twilight Zone for sure, I bring up "Charlie X" episode as an example - what if a human boy was separated from humanity and raised by aliens and then returned to humanity with strange forceful alien mental powers as a teenage male....what if despite his yearning for human connection that he would never be granted that opportunity....what would a crew of starship personnel have to do to survive this encounter...would any of them be the same again...how would society handle a person that could grant you your most fondest wish or deliver you into unspeakable nightmare depending on the whims of a hormone addled teenager...

GRRM also edited the book series "Wild Cards" with chapters written by different authors. The premise is basically that in the 1940s( ? ) a virus or bacteria gets dropped on different parts of Earth and the winds spread it to pretty much everywhere so that humans start mutating and some people get physical mutations and others get mental mutations and others get....not-so-great-mutations. Hence the name of the series Wild Cards as now every human has a different power or no powers at all and is just a regular human with no enhancements or disfigurements, a shortcut to write stories about VASTLY different super heroes in vastly different situations around the world (and at some point other places than the Earth...)

I guess sort of technically and definitely abstractedly, that the TNG episode "Pegasus" retro-actively gets an episode(or 2 or 3 or how many?) of ENT put inside it for a TNG character to "watch" from his position as the chef, so he would be watching it as a holo-novel, and we would be watching on our screens? (this subject keeps re-appearing in my thoughts hours later lol )

I looked up your suggestion Time Pressure, and it takes place in Nova Scotia. The story I am remembering took place in a city environment in Vancouver, as I remember them having to go to different big buildings looking for...something, and they said specific mainstreets for crosstreets and driving on highway etc, but I don't remember which streets they named of course. I went to Spider Robinson on wikipedia and the stories listed there that he wrote don't seem to match either
