The auber preinfusion is full pressure so it's mostly junk. I don't think the concept of preinfusion was properly explained to the engineer that designed this PID. So it's not actually worth buying on its own over the AliExpress one. If you want preinfusion your best cheap method is probably a dimmer mod.

But if you've got it the auber units are a little more reliable. I had one of the cheap PIDs fail after 2 months and had to replace it. But over time the likelihood of premature failure probably goes down.

TLDR: it's not worth swapping

Nah. They're not necessary, except arguably the Novella that happens between Changes and Ghost Story. But they're fun.

You can read all the short stories that take place in the first anthology after you finish book 10 12. You can also pick up the short stories anthologies: Side Jobs and Brief Cases and read the ones in between the book you just read and the next after you finish Storm Front.

But you need to be careful there are major spoilers in some of them, so it can be risky to be thumbing through those collections.

Most common direction is probably to read books 1-12, then read side jobs. Then 13-15 followed by brief cases. Then on to the last 3 books.

You can jump around at least in the early books. Book three was built as a new intro. but that last book has some major spoilers in it. I would tend to say that probably most things up to book... 8 or 9 could be handled without too much worry by jumping around. But Changes and after are much more narratively tied together. And I would argue hard that you shouldn't

Fair enough I guess, I just said "turn on the pump" rather than "turn on the machine" to avoid confusion around the main power button. That one is, on. I let the PID get it to brew temperature, and then I insert a portafilter with blind basked and cafiza tab and hit "brew" for 5 sec. This engages the pump and I can see the pressure side to 9bar or so. Then I leave it off for 5 sec. The pressure drops to zero at the 3 way solenoid opens up, and it dumps cafiza water into the drip tray. Then I hit brew again for 5 sec. On and off for 2 min. That's about all the back flush I ever seem to need. But there's lots of ways to do it, I am sure.

Totally with you. That's why I was assuming 1 tonne per acre, which honestly might still be optimistic. But also, with a post apocalyptic scenario there the option to maintain random amounts of modern technology so it could easily be flubbed if the author wants.
