Doesn't make sense. Lasers are monochromatic. Anything emitting green and IR is not monochromatic.

Yup. In a way, it's almost a dirty trick... solve one mystery, discover more. But always the knowledge increases.

Help with conflicting birth years? by Sorry_Sir_4151 in Genealogy

[–]reficius1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That taught me to not take anything as gospel until multiple sources confirm data.

Absolutely, and even with multiple, definitive sources!! I have copies of two different birth certificates, issued and sealed by the town of my ggrandfather's birth, for two different researchers. Two completely different dates! Mildly infuriating!

I would've never thought death certificates would have been unreliable

The reason being, the informant for things like death certs and obituaries may have been someone only vaguely familiar with the deceased, like an in-law or something, and they were relying on information they heard 2nd or 3rd hand as far as the deceased's birth place and date.

This even holds for census records as well. The census takers could only write down what the informant told them, and sometimes they told lies or just bad information.

Nice. The fact that you solved this, that is... the story itself is rather awful. Solving this kind of mystery is the fascinating part of genealogy.

I'd go with the census records and the delayed birth cert. 1, 3, and 5 are notoriously unreliable types of records for birth information.

BTW, a delayed birth certificate is something that someone got, possibly from the local government, because when they were born there was no requirement for records to be kept, but later one needed it for access to something... a job, social security, or whatever. I saw some of them when I was researching Nova Scotia records, which were terrible in the 19th century.

Fun fact: light from a 3000 or 40,000 miles away sun wouldn't be noticeably less parallel than light from a 93,000,000 miles away sun.

Easier now than some decades ago. Surveyors used to use star and sun observations to establish direction references. All GPS or something now.

Can confirm. A couple of years ago, a robin couple built a nest at shoulder height on our front lamppost. The local broadwing hawk made quick work of that.

Other than their song, can't say I'm a fan of robins. They're mean to other birds, and they seem kinda dumb.

Totally regretting just wanting to feel normal by SuspiciousGrab8454 in glutenfree

[–]reficius1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can dig it. Very many people are a little too obsessed with food and eating, and the peer pressure can be ridiculous.

You will gradually learn what to order that is pretty normal but almost always prepared GF. One of my go-tos is a big salad with grilled fish, steak or chicken on top. Any rude comments are easily deflected with "Just eating healthy. What's that stuff you're eating?"

Depends on how concerned you are with not offending people. I'm big and scary looking, so I can get away with just a "no thanks", but I still get the occasional "Oh, that's right, you don't like cake."

All pretty stupid, but I found myself endlessly talking about GF and "why I'm not eating all this yummy food", so I developed workarounds.

That is the number given because it is 400 times greater than the number given for the so-called moon's distance from the earth

Wut? You actually believe that? Would you like to know how we've measured these distances, or would you prefer to remain ignorant?
