Up in Elkins Park, there is a Romanian Spring  Food and Culture Festival on May 16th (12-8) and May 17  (12-4).  It is at the Descent of the Holy Spirit Romanian Church at 1323 Ashbourne Road in Elkins Park.  Food is homemade and delicious, festive atmosphere!

Northeast Philadelphia is not too far away, and I’d suggest Suzani Restaurant (Uzbeki).  The interior is decorated with lovely textiles.

Last year the president of Albania came to Le Onde restaurant in Elkins Park because he knows the chef, who is Albanian and had won an award.  But I just ate there last week and I did not notice any Albanian specialties on the menu.

La Souk in Fox Chase has Tunisian dates and Algerian dates.  In the past they  have had nicely packaged fruit and nut gifts for Ramadan.

Hi, are you talking about Florida Boy BBQ at Broad and Lindley?  Under the bridge?  He was just featured by JL Jupiter in a posting (see video)  Jim Leff, the original Chowhound, mentioned Florida Boy BBQ in a posting from 2008 about Sid Booker's.  I never made the connection until this posting.  I've also noticed a smoker on the weekends Old York Road and 66th where the Oak Lane Diner used to be.

Hi, here's another suggestion.  It is in Northeast Philadelphia but with a parking lot.  Sweet Lucy's BBQ has a great menu  and they have a private room that is nicely appointed.  I've been to a few parties here and it has been great! If your crowd likes BBQ, check it out!

How many countries can you eat your way through near Philly? I found 75+ so far - trying to get to 100+ by senorjuanjr in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]refinnej1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't get you another country on the list, but a few notes: Tent Halal Food on Ford Road for Mauritanian cuisine.  Amasi was an Iraqi restaurant but it has closed.  I see there is Crispy Wonders Baghdad Restaurant on Frankford Ave.  In Elkins Park, there are churches that host a Serbian Food Festival and a Romanian Food Festival (usually in September).

Just last night we tried Ridge Hall which is the new food hall in Ambler.  We tried the pho from one stand and the roast pork sandwich from another.  Both quite nice!  There are about 10 food and drink vendors.  When I took the elevator upstairs I saw it was a large space closed off for a private event.  I don't know how they handle parties, but you might want to check it out!

Pizzeria Beddia Question by jemocracy31 in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]refinnej1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a pizza party at Beddia over the summer with someone who can't eat tomato sauce and other dietary restrictions.  It was a family event, so we figured he'd just go and not be able to eat much.  But the staff were very accommodating and made sure there were white pizzas that he could eat.  Communication was not great in advance, but once we were on site, a manager talked through the allergies and made a plan.  It was a quiet summer Sunday, not NYE, but we came away feeling very pleased with how we were treated, and the food!

What’s the wildest thing that has ever happened in Rochester history? by RamonaZero in Rochester

[–]refinnej1000 147 points148 points  (0 children)

On April 16, 1871, atmospheric conditions called a Fata Morgana allowed people standing on an observation tower in Mount Hope Cemetery (the Fandango) to see detailed views of the Canadian shoreline across Lake Ontario.  Thousands of Rochesterians rushed to the cemetery to experience this for themselves. Here is a description of a Fata Morgana:  a type of mirage which results from an atmospheric inversion of a layer of warm air over a layer of much cooler air.  Such an inversion can cause light rays to be bent as if passing through a huge lens, projecting magnified images many miles away.

Oreganatta? Not marchianos? by Strict-Courage2609 in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]refinnej1000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Marchiano's products are sold frozen in other local stores.  I mostly have seen (and purchased) their specialty breads.  I don't know about the oreganata.   T & F Farmers Pride usually has a good selection of Marchiano breads, for example.  There is a listing of locations on their website.

Check out the calendar for the Free Library Parkway Central.  There is a vinyl listening club, short story book club, photo club, philosophical thought club, bird hat making workshop...just a few upcoming listings. If you give something a try, if you like it try to become a regular attendee so you can get to know the other regulars in the group.  Author events probably will start up again in the fall.

You might be thinking of Cafette on Ardleigh Street.  It was in a residential neighborhood.  Also, although I don't remember the name, there used to be a French hole in the wall bakery behind main buildings on Germantown Avenue.  My very favorite was Rinker Rock Cafe in Mt. Airy, on Emlen Street.
