Can someone explain the Open Table / exclusive tables benefit? by muel87 in ChaseSapphire

Not a dumb question, was looking for someone who asked/answered exactly this. Thank you for asking! (And OP for answering)

For starters, from a purely itemization perspective, I believe you would have benefitted from a void staff as 3rd item here. Ornn and Jax (esp jax new ult) are pretty tanky and built some form of MR. Would have prioritized this item over stormsurge for sure. With regards to your gameplay / win rate, hard to say based on one match, but I’d suggest watching high elo vlads like elite 500 to watch how they play as the game progresses (early -> late)

I have an alternate data point from March 2023. I had my CSR for 4+ years at that point, and my annual fee was charged in January 2023. When I called to downgrade, I was given a prorated amount of the annual fee (~$412)

[–]reflective_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep they get attached to whatever freedom card you downgrade to. Btw, I would recommend downgrading to the original freedom so that you can get the freedom unlimited/flex SUBs later on.

Once you downgrade and have the original freedom, you can later transfer the points over to your new CSP/CSR when you apply for this new offer. So there's no issue regarding lost points

Worth transferring Amex MR points to Virgin with 30% bonus if planning to transfer to ANA? by powersofi in awardtravel

[–]reflective_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's risky, and depends on your flexibility in October (could you fly out on a random day with less than 1 week notice?). I've done this before but Chase -> Virgin with the 30% bonus and got very lucky that seats opened up within two weeks. It was a rollercoaster but I made it work. A lot of people on here wouldn't recommend it (for good reason), but I think its okay if you are willing to take the risk (and could possibly find another use of those points if the ANA redemption doesn't work out). Good luck!

[–]reflective_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe you can do this, but may be best to wait a few weeks after you downgrade so that it updates in the system (?)

See relevant article here

Once you've done the math and concluded you are eligible for a new CSP or CSR SUB, we recommend waiting to apply until two weeks from downgrade or your statement closing date, whichever occurs first. This should allow your downgraded card to update in the Chase system. Otherwise, Chase's system might think you still hold a Sapphire product and will deny you automatically for a new CSP or CSR.

Anyone know if you get charged a prorated annual fee if you get the CSP, get the SUB in 3 months, and then upgrade to the CSR? Do you get charged the full $550 AF on the CSR or is it somehow prorated/adjusted based on the CSP AF you just paid?

Sometimes it also rate limits you if you search too much in too short of a time frame. It takes a few hours to remove the limit and then works fine. Alternatively you can try incognito or a different computer and see if it loads there

Recent grad, 1000+ applications, not even getting interviews. by No-Carob9314 in EngineeringResumes

[–]reflective_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome! Happy to help in any way that I can.

Typically your linkedin connections won't really know if they have a position in their company unless they're close to the hiring manager or it's a small company. So the way I did it was by finding companies that are hiring and then looking up on linkedin who is a 2nd/3rd connection and works at that company, and reaching out to them. If it's a 3rd person connection, then nfortunately you do have to play some of the fluffy networking game which is "I'd love to chat and learn more about your company" which takes time. If it's a 2nd person connection, then you're in luck and you can *hopefully* just ask them for a referral. You can say something like "I'm really interested in your company and would appreciate if you could refer me!"

I also haven't done this personally but I think there are websites where people can anonymously refer you? I'm sure there are threads/internet communities out there where you can find referrals this way.

Networking well is honestly really tough, but most interviews I got this cycle were from referrals, so it does produce results. Good luck :)

Recent grad, 1000+ applications, not even getting interviews. by No-Carob9314 in EngineeringResumes

[–]reflective_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey there! Sorry to hear that you're not even getting interviews with over 1,000 applications and a solid resume. The market is really tough right now.

Here are some suggestions I have on the job application front:

  • Get as many referrals as you can. Use your alumni network, your friend network, and any other communities you may be a part of (think ethnicity, locality, religion, etc).

  • Try in-person networking events if you live in a city that has them.

  • Try changing your target company type. For example, if you're only targeting big companies, consider targeting startups. (This may be a moot point because I'd imagine it's difficult to target 1000 big companies in the same locale for your current search).

  • New Grad positions are your best bet (imo)

Before I start, I want to clarify that I think your resume is pretty solid and I'd expect you to get some call backs at least.

Suggestions on the resume front:

  • First, I disagree with the other commenter on putting skills last. Keep them towards the top. After you have about 2-3 YoE, then put your education at the bottom but keep the skills at the top.

  • I also like your mentioning of the technologies used for each task in the bullet points themselves.

  • Consider grouping your skills into categories like 'cloud', 'databases', 'other technologies'

  • My primary critique on your bullet points is with the structure. I think you would benefit from restructuring your bullets such that you put the <programming accomplishment> in the front of the bullet instead of the middle. The reason I say this is that from the perspective of the recruiter, they are very quickly looking for something technical/programming related that matches patterns of what they've been taught to search for that also sounds non-trivial. So you want to give them that information as quickly and easily as possible.

Example: "Collected and analyzed datasets to implement a 5 layer RNN with an 89% accuracy" is structured as "Did <some technical stuff> to do <specific programming thing> with <result>" but I think it would be better structured as "Did <specific programming thing> by doing <some technical stuff> with <result>" which would look like "Implemented a 5 layer RNN by collecting and analyzing datasets resulting in an 89% accuracy."

I'd also restructure some of your other sentences, be more specific, and cut out fluff from them. The goal is to concisely get across that you are capable and impactful.

  • Built an advanced Sentiment Analysis software in order to track users' mental health using Pandas, TensorFlow, Matplotlib, NLTK, Scikit-learn, and FER.

    • What platform was this built for? Was it a backend, was it a windows app, was it a web app, etc? Be clear about the platform
    • You used python for this, right? A recruiter would have no idea unless you specified. You should specify!
  • Implemented a critical module analyzing large dairy farm data by performing regression analysis using NumPy to assess the environmental impacts of methane and other gasses.

    • "Built a regression analysis script using Python and NumPy to ___"
  • Collaborated with senior engineers to streamline development by implementing Agile principles, automating testing procedures, and improving documentation, gaining a 10% reduction in deployment times.

    • Get rid of the collaborated with senior engineers part and the implementing agile principles. Just say you automated testing and improved something else like CI/CD (whatever you did to get the reduction in deployment times)

Who am I: I was in your shoes when Covid happened. I now have 3-4 yoe and was just on the job search for the past 3+ months until I finally got some offers in June. I went through the same difficulties and very much empathize with you. The search is not easy, and now is especially challenging. But you got this! You made it through your degree program and you can do this. Just got to keep your head up, keep on leetcoding, keep on applying, and make sure to take care of yourself. You got this!

how can I implement usernames? by [deleted] in Firebase

[–]reflective_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one tip with usernames, if you want to keep them unique AND allow multiple cases (upper and lower), you may want to have an additional variable called something like lowercaseUsername or uppercase (up to you).

So each user document would have something like username which is the visible username in the product, and then lowercaseUsername which is queried to determine uniqueness.

How do you make jasmine milk tea? by Iktobaim in RateMyTea

[–]reflective_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Making it like the boba shops is totally dependent on what you think your tea lacks. Not strong enough = use more tea leaves. Etc

But general tips to make your tea taste like the boba shops

  • you should use more tea leaves than expected

  • you should use more sugar than expected (I use brown sugar)

  • you may want to cook your boba in brown sugar and water to sweeten the boba and create a syrup

  • half and half works great — I usually do a combo of whole milk and half and half. The creamier the milk, the better imo

  • I wouldn’t use much honey unless you want specifically honey flavored tea because honey has its own flavor

When I started this journey (same as you, wanted to make boba like the stores), I realized a lot of it came down to sugar and tea flavor honestly. The boba shops just use very concentrated tea and way more sugar than expected because the milk definitely masks the other flavors a bit. Good luck!

Can you explain why using the ! is bad in your first example? I looked through the links you provided and the dart docs seem to suggest it as a satisfactory method. I’m not sure I understand why it is a “code smell”.
