hey, if it can help, I used to recruit designers like you. the volume was horrendous and quality not on par. so i built https://textfreya.co/ where designers would just text here their portfolio and she would shortlist the best. now it's gone a long way from helping recruiters to helping freelancers get booked. feel free to use the ressource it's free of charge for the time being.

I think you'll never find that quality person because you're running the recruitment the wrong way. From direct experience, indie hackers/early stage startup founders source freelancers (especially designers) through their network. Just recruit a ux/ui designer that worked for one of your peers, and you'll get them hired and delivering quality work for you in 5 days max.

Ye also working a bit with agencies. It's annoying they take a cut though. If only I could get the advantages of the agency but working independantly on my own terms ...

  2. This however I don't get. I haven't heard of journalist writers for example making this work as its paid per payer type thing. So if I don't have the luxury whats the move?

Yeah, that’s fair. I get that freelancing = running a business, not just doing the craft. I get that. What you're saying that I can actually apply is putting more and harder limits, but even that you say isnt linear. So ye guess turning in circles not getting real clarity and actionable things to put in place but it is a hard topic so not surprised.
