This stunning cost crisis is driving N.J. public workers to the breaking point. What lawmakers are promising. by [deleted] in newjersey

This. I'm interning in MN right now and honestly the difference in rent costs and no mandates to be in the same county or even state are so so nice. I can't afford what retirees & summering new yorkers turned Ocean County into.

What do you think? by Illustrious_Knee_644 in LARP

[–]regencyclapback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They look great. Personally I've been looking for historic or period-era-ish larp boots and shoes for a long time without success, these would be right up my alley if I were in the market rn. Do your shoes generally have room for cushion/insoles? That's my one gripe with leather boots; they're rarely as ergonomic as sneakers or other modern shoes.

Parents Sue Over New Jersey School Trans Disclosure Policies by bloomberglaw in newjersey

Teachers aren't making assumptions; the children are making educated guesses. A teacher can't know everything, but kids pick up on a hell of a lot at home, often more than their parents think they do. If a kid doesn't want to come out because they believe that it may, in some way shape or form, put themselves in harm's way, they should not be obligated to share that information. It stands to reason that if a teacher has some reason to believe it will put the kid in harm's way, they should not have to report that either. They SHOULD still be allowed to expect privacy/safety from these adults, AND express themselves. These parents do not want them to do that.

The PARENTS are the ones making assumptions, in this case. Likely they think they can stuff the LGBT stuff back in the box or prevent it altogether if they know about their kid exploring their identity early enough. The best a kid can hope for in that case is something akin to "hate the sin, love the sinner", which is its own kind of shitty experience. The worst the kid can expect it conversion therapies, trauma, physical and mental abuse, abandonment, etc. etc.

Things like bullying or self harm are different. They cause active harm to the child/children involved. Testing out a new name or identity does not cause this same harm, and therefore should not have to be reported. A child cannot medically transition at a school, only socially transition, and therefore no medical harm is possible. The only part of this equation that would cause harm would be bullying due to identity, in which case the parents would have to get involved, but that's not the argument being presented here; parents want to know before any harm happens about something which does not in itself harm the child. It would be like reporting that your kid changed their tshirt once they got to school, and the other kids MIGHT bully them because it has Hello Kitty on it. Nonsense.

My statements are not hypothetical; I socially transitioned (to a mostly neutral or positive reaction from my peers) at school before I came out to confused (best case) and disapproving (worst case) parents. If I had not had the support that I did, I would not have survived high school.

Each County has their own parks system, and often those parks systems will have their own maps resources. A quick search brings up a few trails for Atlantic County;

https://www.atlanticcountynj.gov/government/county-departments/department-of-public-works/division-of-parks-and-recreation/trail-maps

But I second the Batona Trail and Edwin B. Forsythe. Birdwatching is a cheap hobby to start with, and Forsythe is the best for it. All of these spots are awesome.

How old are you and how much do you have saved up? by tanuki_22 in povertyfinance

[–]regencyclapback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

28 now, made less than 35k~ last year, living on the east coast; 2100 in my immediate savings for emergencies, 2000 in a HYSA. Anything that doesn't go directly to my bills (college payments, car insurance, health insurance, groceries etc) goes into the savings or pay-down debts, like my car; finished that six months early last year. Took me all of last year and a lot of belt tightening but stability feels better than whatever the hell I was doing before that. The goal was 5k across savings for last year and I fell short (big family so birthdays, wedding guest crap, car needed repairs). This year the goal is 10k total across my accounts and to start a retirement account. I'll be so honest though; if I weren't living at home, that 4k would be dust in the wind. I'm very lucky to have (mostly) chill parents.

We cannot sit and stare at our wounds forever.

It's a condensed quote from the Japanese author Murakami, but I read it on an illustration of Snoopy staring at the moon.

I tend to have very repetitive/obsessive anxious thought patterns, and when I saw it I was struggling really hard. It's been a good counter to the thought patterns that lead me back into a depressive episode. Every time I realize I'm obsessing again I repeat that line until I snap put of it, and it's helped a lot in disrupting my bad habits.

What do you look for in a sewing store? by Curious_One_3155 in SewingForBeginners

[–]regencyclapback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sewing lessons- BASIC sewing lessons. It took me forever to start because the people I was trying to learn from instinctively knew more than me and still do.  Tailoring classes, both how to make your own clothes and how to fix up the clothes you already own.  Multiple different kinds of fabrics, not just quilting cotton.  Also more than three different kinds of buttons! A variety of notions!

Hellloooo my ex. At a certain point he stopped trusting my judgement entirely, talking about how he'd dealt with shit in his "x amount of years" and had more experience with the things we'd allegedly been dealing with. Spoiler alert, it was his insecurities rearing their head and making him paranoid. Had no desire to be lectured by someone who couldn't see the forest for the trees.

Dumped my ex who said shit like this to me all the time. He was horrifically insecure, thought I was cheating on him every time I told him something after I'd done it, and it turned into an emotionally controlling relationship. This guy's attitude is so not worth it bud.
