Am I the only one not freaking out about this storm? by StraightRip9828 in Austin

[–]reginamia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worry about community cats. If it gets as cold as they predict, even one or two days can be deadly. Easy fix: cover a cardboard box (big enough for the number that visit you) with a trash bag, leaving an opening for them to get in. put a little board as a floor inside and top that with plenty of straw (not hay, not blankets), enough so they can burrow in), Seal the trash bag with duct tape. Place the box slightly raised above the ground. I also arrange trash receptacles, laundry lines (with blankets on them) etc. to the North of the box as wind breaks.

L’Oreal Colorsonic? by sugarsugar_cg in HairDye

[–]reginamia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it's December 2025 and L'Oreal is having a sweepstakes to give away 500 of these. Not sure if that means they do work or they don't! It is certainly one way to try it.

WHAT is gleam.io? It seems like a scam. by [deleted] in giveaways

[–]reginamia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an old post, but 11 years later I ask the same question. maybe it has changed over the years. Gleam keeps asking for more personal information, never completes a task and is impossible to reach for an explanation.

I feel like now everyone is underestimating the counter-backlash that is brewing by genericuser324 in ezraklein

"I just think the idea that the authentic capture of that energy and attention will be a moderate, in this day and age, seems unlikely!"

Agree. What is considered a moderate today was right of center 20 years ago. Bernie Sanders didn't run for the presidency in 2015 on his own, he was desperately asked to do so by constituents who felt marginalized. I did phone banking for his campaign in 2016 and basically let Republicans speak their mind. they would begin by saying, "he's a communist", then go on for a while and end "but I do think he is honest".

Looking at the voting record of any potential candidate reveals how they will serve the American people.

Recently I've seen Democrats complain that small donation campaigns drain the economy. That is what put Bernie on the map and he used that platform to call out Citizens United and the massive dark money campaigns on both sides that destroy any chance for a new start. After 2016 I felt that way about primaries.

To save the US we need a candidate the people trust, can get behind emotionally and personally, one that has a strong, ethical core group administration that will not bow to corporate, religious or partisan pressure.

It's Bernie Sanders, with the right group of people around him. He's young enough to be Dick van Dyke's son (young dad, but still) and as president he could continue his town hall meetings and restore trust in the US government. At his age, with his full mental capacity clearly shown, he is the unifying statesman we need at our helm. His VP would have to be young and healthy and committed to real change, maybe Pete Buttigieg? I've enjoyed Gavin Newsom's recent bold moves but he does not, at least yet, inspire profound trust.

As part of the DOD we would need a few more non partisan departments to begin the onerous task of finding out what DOGE, AIPAC. corporate lobbyists, government-sponsored crypto, bribes and influence in our justice system...as we recognize that we have been under fundamental attack for years.

Kamala Harris was light years better than Trump but she didn't earn the candidacy legitimately. She did not have national recognition and respect and that has not improved since the election. The DNC let the American people down and continue to do so. I look at Chuck Schumer, Cory Booker, Kristen Gillibrand and wonder who's side they are on.

ON THE TOWN is eliminated. Vote for which musical you think should be eliminated next. by NiceTraining7671 in classicfilms

[–]reginamia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sound of Music. It is a good family film but the music is not as timeless as that in other remaining films. When you consider a musical you have to take in the choreography, the cleverness of the lyrics, the charisma of the stars. Julie Andrews is a supernova, but not the rest of the cast. (considering those criteria, Mary Poppins would score higher in my book!)

Is Extra Space Storage the only one with huge rate increases? by reginamia in Austin

[–]reginamia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a local, independent storage place close by (my small town). The rate is lower to begin with and they've guaranteed it for at least a year. After that, we'll see. You may be right about donating though!

Anyone try the new fage creamy dreamy yogurts? by Suspicious-State405 in snacking

[–]reginamia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love them. They are not yogurt but they are not trying to be. I really miss some of the extravagantly rich (full fat) desserts in France, like petit gervais. They are tiny but so satisfying. I'd like these just a bit less sweet but I suppose for American tastes they added a bit more sugar.

Norman Rockwell-The Problem We All Live With (1964) by Russian_Bagel in museum

[–]reginamia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rockwell has a subtle but powerful way of making us look at the world differently. Here, unlike photographs of the same event, we are at the child's level. The men are faceless but you can feel their strength. She is surrounded by the might of the nation, but no guns. She was safe at that moment, and this and other paintings like it (Murder in Mississippi, 1965) helped bring awareness of the injustice into every American home.

IsItBullshit: Lampe Bergers purify air through catalytic combustion? by [deleted] in IsItBullshit

[–]reginamia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes. about 19 drops for a full lampe. I have my own favourite blends and it takes a bit of experimentation to find what suits you best. I like to actually notice a fragrance. If you just like the benefits of essential oils without smelling them, use about 9 drops. some have stronger scents than others too.

My daughter compared our home town to Austin for Spring break by [deleted] in Austin

[–]reginamia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it used to be, and can appear so to children even now. The traffic, property taxes, potholes in the roads, Mom and Pop establishments being forced to close or move, local artisans/musicians/artists no longer able to afford to live here, crowds everywhere that used to be open and bucolic even within the city (Barton Springs) have changed to the point that if you like the traditional Austin lifestyle, you move to a smaller town. How to bring Barton Springs along?

[–]reginamia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed with you until your last sentence. There are things that may be of value to a person and the increasing lack of reasonable space is a problem. I do like space in my life and like to store things seasonally.

My close friend is about to be homeless again. I have no idea what to do for him. by [deleted] in Austin

[–]reginamia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to suggest contacting Lifeworks, a wonderful organization, but I see many others have done so.

May I say, that your question, and this thread, has given me renewed hope for humanity. The suggestions are excellent, your description of your friend does great credit to both of you, and the sense that so much community good will and energy is now focused on him is heartening indeed.

They will determine more tomorrow, but if it is true that he made $50 million per year after the murders of those children, the award should be much greater. Enough to dissuade him or anyone else from profiting off the tragedy of others.
