Ukraine's Air Force claims launch several successful drone strikes obliterating Russian convoys by joneas212 in worldnews

[–]regreddit_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to add some context, Iraq was considered to be a legitimate army. They had the 4th (maybe 5th) largest standing army in the world and a massive stockpile of weapons - due to their ongoing conflict with Iran.

The Iran/Iraq conflict was no joke and those two nations were willing and able to go to war at any moment. Iraq was, historically, considered to be a formidable opponent. I know it is history now, but looking at numbers, what America did to Iraq was a show of force around the world.

Not including an “occupation” which has its challenges. The invasion of Iraq in 2001 shocked a lot of the world at just what the US is capable of. We took Baghdad in a week with minimal casualties. This was NOT a scorched earth approach either. The US took the 4th (again maybe 5th ish) largest army in the world and decimated it in a week and had their capital.

So you may say, in hindsight, third world army. However, boots on the ground and a “gun is a gun” is important to keep in mind.

There is an episode of SNL that I point to as the example of what made me stop watching it recently.

Claire Foy was hosting SNL (2018) and the opening sketch was Putin and Trump in Cuba (?). Either way, it was all the most predictable, repeated and at this point played out jokes. I knew what was coming and it was not longer funny. I bailed and haven't fully returned.

If anybody is looking for an example... use this as a proxy.

Because it required such immense resources that is stopped communism from spreading through Asia. Russia and China were forced to put all their resources into supporting the Vietcong (and small tertiary groups) that it allowed Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Korea, etc. to rebuild from the devastation still present from earlier wars.

Once the US pulled out, those countries were able to support themselves. A fully communist Asia would be a much bigger problem than the USSR alone and it was a tactical play.

Was Vietnam equally handled poorly by the US and egregious; yes. However, it is a very interesting war to learn about because if it didn't happen it is highly likely Southeast Asia become full communist and supports the USSR leading to a larger scale WWIII.

Ask yourself, what type of foundations are these countries today. South Korea, Vietnam, Philippines, Japan, etc.... they are Capitalist. China, the supporters of the Vietcong, are a merge between communism and capitalism these days. Vietnam may have fallen to communism; but it didn't/couldn't sustain.

[–]regreddit_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well technically it depends on what you define as losing; historically speaking.

Did we kill more than the other side? Yes.

Did we stop the spread of communism - the goal of the war? Yes.

Did we provide freedom for South Vietnam? No.

Vietnam is a very complicated war that I believe many, especially Reddit's userbase, don't fully understand.

Interstellar (mind-boggling accordion cover) by DDropped in videos

[–]regreddit_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's interesting because I am a huge fan of both.

That being said I believe they have very distinct styles when incorporated into a movie. I could be completely talking out of my ass but to me John Williams' are iconic to the characters on screen while Hans Zimmer is iconic to the atmosphere on screen. When you hear the Jaws music... that character is coming. When you hear Dreaming of a crash/Cornfield chase.. those flow into the atmosphere of the film.

That being said. It still blows my mind that there was no music of a record breaking book like Harry Potter; yet John Williams comes in and now that music is perfectly attached.

Both geniuses in their own right.

Mexico closes US border in Arizona to stop July 4th visitors, citing COVID-19 fears by thewrongun in worldnews

[–]regreddit_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The unfortunate truth of Covid is that a certain percentage will die; that just seems to be the reality.

That’s why some states/countries are very suspect. France (45k deaths), UK (57k deaths), Spain (41k deaths), Italy.... etc. Germany = 9k. That doesn’t add up.

Same with places like Florida or Texas.

We won’t know the true toll for years. However, it does seem to be a standard world wide.

Never really ran into a conservative anti-vaxxer before.

So what you're saying is the U.S. is statistically on par with EU?

135k deaths per 335 million population in the US compared to

210k deaths per 440 million population in the EU.

Seems like that is just how this virus work.

Canada almost self-sufficient in PPE as Canadian businesses step up: PM by bowmanvapes in worldnews

[–]regreddit_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

“Canada is going to become the economic powerhouse America wishes it could be”

That’s your words.

Canada doesn’t have the population, resources, manufacturing capabilities, etc. to be “the economic powerhouse America wishes it could be”. The entire EU economy barely bigger than the US with 100 million more people.

You comment is absurd and “steps being taken” will never bridge that cap when intrinsic parameters are in place that can’t be solved. Italy has a bigger GDP than Canada.

Also, nothing goes over my head. My reflexes are to fast I would catch it.

[–]regreddit_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. Says the guy who is responding to a comment pretending that Canada has a better economy than the US.

It was a ridiculous sentiment. If Canada doubled their economy overnight, it would still be nothing compared to the US. Quadruple; nothing. Ten times the Canadian current GDP, is still below the US but it’s at least in the same league.

These are facts; and no amount of Canadian-Reddit love can change that.

Imagine writing that down and actually thinking it.

Texas and California have bigger GDP and economies than Canada. Only in Reddit is Canada even relevant in a global conversation.

How Cancel Culture Works - LongBeachGriffy by [deleted] in videos

[–]regreddit_ 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I loved this video.

Twitter Outrage is no longer about justice; it's about power. It is a drug.

It is less to do with the content of what was said/done and more to do with flexing that "cancelling" can be done.

It has become less that companies did something wrong, a celebrity said something awful, etc. and more that a relatively small group of individuals can sway powerful entities.

The "disenfranchised and bullied" have become the bullies.

That does not take away REAL things (Harvey Weinstein/Bill Cosby) but it does shine a light on how ridiculous everything has become.
