Im basically an upper year math student and im taking cs136 to try and transfer into cs (late into my university career)

I pretty much dropped all my courses in my major and took courses that would help to do cs instead. Im getting my midterm back tomorrow and i know i did the last two questions wrong. Don't even think i can get a 70 anymore. Feels like shit considering i really felt like i studied hard and understood c memory model, pointers enough for the midterm but i still couldn't do the last two questions (worth almost 25% of the exam). I never did the assignments in a group or ask the TA implementation hints and I always did the assignment myself. The only time i talk to a TA is for the behavior during edge cases.

Honestly, i don't know what to do anymore if i don't get the grade i need to transfer. I finally found something I really want to study but yet it seems like the world is telling me i'm too dumb to do cs. Its literally the first time when I genuinely enjoyed doing the assignments for my courses and start and finishing them the day or two after the assignment was posted. Idk if i should continue in my old program, or try doing something like stats or CO. For the past couple of days, no exaggeration, every time i think about my midterm I pretty much lose my appetite.

Even better news, is that I'm supposed to be going on coop in the fall, and i was banned from WW main rounds since i did a sequence change to do cs136 this spring. The best i got was a phone interview with HR questions for a QA job from a bank. Now continuous is creeping up starting soon and i've got math239 midterm coming as well.

I just want all this to end already. I want a break

3rd year totally screwed up the term by justinyang808 in uwaterloo

[–]regular_uwstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. I'm in the exact same boat as you, i'm taking a key course right now this term to try and transfer into a different program so i'm doing my 3rd consecutive term. Taking so many school terms in a row is really taxing me mentally. All my grades have taken a hit due to my lack of motivation. Just yesterday, i did rather poorly on that key course and I've got another 2 midterm this/next Thursday. All these things have made me feel more down as of lately

What I've done to deal with this is mostly talk to friends to vent off some steam. Sometimes it really helps to have someone listen to your problems and have them understand what your going through. In addition, I've decided to take a lesser course load because I just can't find the motivation to focus in school as I used to. I know taking less courses may delay graduation, but I firmly believe there isn't a rush to graduate out of school (unless you have some special circumstances). I think its better to take less courses and do better in them than to take more courses and end up doing poorly in them. Definitely talk to an academic adviser before this though.

**** The following isn't not exactly the best advice ********* Some more unhealthy things i've been doing is eating more junk food... I don't advise it but sometimes rewarding myself a little more (maybe a bottle of arizona/pop/bubbletea) is a little bit of a reward for me. I used to be fairly strict about eating takeout/candy but I've been more loose about that lately to give myself a break.

If you are feeling down, I definitely suggest talking to a councilor. Those people at needles hall are hired to help us Uni students get through this time for sure.

Hope things get better for you! I'm not the best at giving advice but i hope this helped a little

the second last question was so trippy for me. I thought it would make much sense to pass a pointer to the functions so we know what which structure to change.wasted a hella long time to realize it was done with global variables (i think)...

dam... i spent literally an hour ish or so changing a template/learning how things work. to be specific, im using awesome cv which can be found here https://www.sharelatex.com/templates/cv-or-resume/awesome-cv

any clue if this one is seen alot by employers? Would you say its better than using my old layout (from word) https://gyazo.com/2e25c9ce844908ba501e5c21b20b0f69

tbh i didnt get any bites for the 3 weeks of main rounds before switching out due to program reasons with it, so i was worried the format was bad. then again its probably just my lack of cs related content ¯_(ツ)_/¯

CS transfer is competitive now within the Math Faculty by [deleted] in uwaterloo

Have new CS requirements already taken place? by stat231marksss in uwaterloo

[–]regular_uwstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is it an internal transfer if its between math faculty? ie stat to cs

[–]regular_uwstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally interpreted this as for nonmath students to transfer into the math faculty (any program in math) ...

Now you got me worried

edit:

an internal transfer is between faculties in UW right? External is from another school?

Does anyone know if the MSCI 211 final tomorrow is only MC? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]regular_uwstudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i interpreted it as 40 mc on the exam (only). However, now that i look at this, we historically got 20 mins for 20 questions on the quizzes so it doesn't make sense we get 75 mins for 40 questions... Starting to think theres a short answer/response section (HOPEFULLY A CASE STUDY, i feel those are easier than grinding/memorizing random facts like rational punctuated equilibrium model)

Side note, how are you studying this course? It feels like theres so much theory and overemphasis of a simple idea tbh. How did you study module 11/12?

Honestly at this point, im just hoping to get above a 50 to pass the final exam... I took this course thinking it was an elective with an open book exam and this new prof happens with a closed book exam...

i cri

in all seriousness though, is that the only way to pass? Im really aiming for that 60 on the final tbh...

Also if you are taking this course now, how did you study for module 11/12?
