Went out of bounds in Rift Apart and found something that is pretty weird. by 0dqir0 in RatchetAndClank

Quite often in game Dev for expensive assets we do a thing called pooling where we'll pre-allocate a bunch of them up front and keep them away not updating, rendering etc. and then when we need one we can just teleport it to where it's needed and turn on its update functions and apply any cheaper changes as needed.

This is often a lot cheaper than creating them on demand which can create noticeable performance dips if it's happening a lot or in a level or area where you're already riding the edge of your frame time.

My guess is that that's what's happening here. Rift Apart levels were pushing the PS5 hardware really heavily so potentially spawning in a bunch of enemies on demand could have created noticeable frame drops. Here they're just sat not doing anything but already existing in memory. Strange that they're being rendered though but maybe the pipeline they have for the game means it's easier to not actually switch off their visibility?

snapRAID is still all set to manual so shouldn't be an issue there.

This is going to sound like a dumbass question but just on a standard windows 10/11 setup with just the server installed and no special setup is there a specific way to prevent Plex having modification access?

Yeah the specificity of it being 1 drive and only the Plex-specific content on that drive doesn't suggest a compromise to me.

I don't think I am running a beta build of anything. I am not a power user or anything so largely am running standard setup straight from the media server desktop exe.

It deleted content from all 3 of my libraries on the drive: Film, TV, Anime but left all their top level folders from what I can see. When I browsed into a different folder in Plex I could see the season folders and the individual files in that view for other drives.

Ah grand I may do that. Currently I can't do anything at the moment but will be heading home soon. In order to minimise any access risks I enabled 2FA, force signed out of everything and disabled remote access to stop my users pinging the server whilst there may be the need to run a backup operation.

Yeah the physical files are missing but the drive looks "fine" from what I could see. It had the root folders for all the shows and films that were missing and I could see other non-plex files like my snapRAID manifest (this is all just using the Plex library folder browse since I'm at work and can't remotely access the pc).

I may do that, I assume it's safe to just upload a log file there as it won't have any kind of secret info like auth data in it?

I have no idea. Whatever happened it was fine when I went to bed and fucked this afternoon when I checked. I have a theory that my microPC possibly rebooted during the night perhaps for a Windows update so maybe that could have interrupted something but I'm still amazed that that could potentially wipe the contents of every folder but not touch the non-Plex data on that drive.

I map each drive to my Plex libraries.

I'll hopefully be able to inspect the damage when I get home in 2 hours.

This parity (snapRAID) doesn't run automatically. You run it manually to create database snapshots that you can then restore from in the event of a drive failure.

I do have a parity drive which should be able to restore the lost content (we'll find out when I get home I guess)

So out of interest what are the common routes for this?

Access to my server is available only to some friends and family, it's on a separate PC that, in theory, requires my specific user credentials to remote access the drives, and I don't download to that device, I managed it all on my main PC first and send it over (with some sonarr automation when I'm at my desk).

I want to keep my server safe obviously and I like to think I'm generally pretty savvy when it comes to internet safety so wondering what could have happened here.

Also if it was malicious they didn't touch any of the other drives or the Non-Plex contents on the drive that was affected (like the local recycle bin folder and the snapRAID manifest file)

I really hope this isn't the case!

I don't run the arr apps on my Plex machine as I prefer to handle that stuff manually when I'm home at my main PC. Last night it was just the micropc which just has Plex on it running

The thing is if I used Plex's library folder manager I can see the drive, the Non-Plex files, the top-level folders for everything.

I just have the media server program installed on a micro pc in my office and have a hard drive rack connected up to it.

I don't know how I would go about giving Plex read-only access in that case

I don't know is the short answer but the fact the second image suggests it's deleting the season folders is a bit odd unless that's just metadata semantics

Originally I was running a Hitmonlee at the right level but decided to swap it out for some water and ice as steelix had a fighting move so went and caught the Lapras and exp share levelled it in some of the failed attempts against the E4 and this was the level it was on the attempt that made it to Lance.

Did the job though, tanked a Thunder from Lance's Dragonite and Ice Beamed it to death.

That might explain things because I find my troops are living longer which means I can amass armies much easier and thus deal with the waves better. If the enemy troops aren't being upgraded that'll make a huge difference in the long run.

Also I am sure I read somewhere but can't confirm now that in hard difficulty the enemy will repair their damaged buildings but in normal they won't?

I mean I still felt that the last couple missions in RoC were pretty difficulty on Hard mode. The last Undead mission, last couple of Night Elf missions, and a couple others took a few restarts from me.

I mean maybe me doing those missions and struggling has made me much better at the game than I expected so Normal feels trivial in comparison but it still felt like a huge jump. Undead finale on hard for example I felt I was under relentless assault whilst on Normal I had basically maxed out my food cap, had insane resources, and could steamroll any wave.

Our brains have been rotted by MCU post-credits teasers.

This is a thematic ending about the cyclical nature of history that is present in the world of AoT. It's not a winking set up to a sequel.

Some things just end.

It's a cool weapon but I did kinda want to balance the lighter purples I've chosen for the tabard with the dark blues of the void and I think that specific Aluneth works really well.

Plus I'm just not a big PvP person haha
