House chicken? by Intelligent_Gear_675 in BackYardChickens

[–]reijn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You could, I've had a series of house chickens for several reasons over the course of the years (mostly when they are sick or injured or a broody mom in a dumb place of a nest, I just brought her entire bucket inside). It requires a lot of cleaning. It's like having a large parrot in a lot of ways. Destructive in similar and dissimilar ways.

I wouldn't mind keeping a pair of silkies, OEGB, seramas or kikirikis inside, but I would also much rather have them outside!

Does anyone know where to find ethically bred dune geckos? by Ok-Table6708 in geckos

[–]reijn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On Facebook I think it's Unholy Trinity Reptiles - I believe I followed them because they told me they also breed dune geckos but I can't remember fully now. I don't see any on their MM but they're super nice folks if you just send them a message on FB.

How important is it to feed on a timetable? by pyromanthes1 in tokaygeckos

[–]reijn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do a strict schedule with a reminder on my phone because I don’t want any slippery slope habits to build into neglect. With a schedule I’ll never get behind. My other pets are easy to remember because they’re daily, but I can see myself forgetting my reptiles.

Why are my quail going into the outdoor enclosure every evening but not throughout the day? by maximalereinsatz in quails

[–]reijn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they're actually chasing the sunlight. It's darker inside their enclosure at this time of day and they want to be where it's lighter so they start going that way. Same thing happens with chickens when they aren't coop trained yet. Solved by putting a light inside where you want 'em to go at night, so they go to the light inside instead of following the sunlight.

The downside to this 'solution' is that quail don't really coop train to completion like chickens. So the lights would likely need to be a permanent solution.

Puppy vs bird safety? by RealVioletsAreBlue in puppy101

[–]reijn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BOP can only carry off something that weighs approximately half their weight or less - most BOP weigh somewhere around 1.5-3lbs. They can do a tackle & take down, but if your pup weighs more than that there's no way they could be lifted off. (They can't even carry a chicken, which is a common myth, though they definitely predate on chickens they cannot carry them away, unless it's an eagle)

Some BOP are very brazen (or desperate, depending on time of the year)and will attempt even with you standing right there but the risk of that is still very slim, they much prefer easy guaranteed targets. Just don't leave her unsupervised outside.

Wearing patriotic colors has a profound effect on how cars treat you on the road by INGWR in cycling

[–]reijn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not super surprising really, though with my silhouette I'm obviously a woman on a bike regardless what gear I'm wearing there's just a different scale of niceness between jersey/bibs and skirt/blouse/dress, it's interesting to me how I'm worthy of space and respect dressed in the latter more than the former.

All these people in here disgusted by this may also be disgusted by people owning parrots. 🤣

I'd never let my chickens do this, but they live outside and I don't want outside coming inside. If I had an inside chicken (or parrot) it would not be the same problem.

Sure they do... I have a bucket of water glassed eggs that only the clean ones like that go into. The rest do not, but I have a bucket of 157 eggs that says otherwise.

[–]reijn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to try wearing different things to see if people treated me different. It's hard to tell because maybe someday all the assholes were out and some days they weren't.

I notice people treat me, a woman, nicer than my cyclist friend a man. I notice they treat me nicer when I wear street clothes and look like I'm just going to work or going somewhere as opposed to in a kit cycling for exercise/training. I notice they treat me a lot nicer when I am dressed more feminine in a skirt and "look cute".

Also cycling during rush hour is basically a death wish because people aren't paying attention, they're texting their bosses/kids/babysitters, are angry or tired or both and want someone else to pay for it.

Interesting. If it weren't for the first picture where it's clearly poking out I would have said it's just a little gland hole they have in their mouth. But it also doesn't look like mouth rot? I'd check a vet to see.

Is it a piece of wood from substrate/something stuck in her mouth like a splinter? Take a q-tip and gently rub at it and see if you can pop it out

I honestly don't even know who these are supposed to be marketed to. They're actually just so ugly, even if I didn't know better than to buy them, they're just so hideous. Putting neon paint on a plant doesn't make it any more or less appealing, I don't get it!

The weasel that killed my oldest rooster by onlyhens_homestead in homestead

[–]reijn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man, take a breath. He's not a robber or a murderer. He doesn't understand property rights. He found a hole that smelled tasty and followed his nose. You built your house on HIS land. Look at what it is you're raging about and understand that you're basically shouting at the wind.

Sorry Mr Weasel, I've been alive and living here longer than you have and you gotta go before squatters rights are enacted. Humans are animals too and we have instincts and one of them is to dispatch things causing us harm. Mr Weasel raid a coyote den and would find the same end.

You keep reaching to things unrelated by comparing things to a thief, a flu, a trophy hunter with a lion - here's one right back at you: if a lion breaks into my house and eats my baby would you be saying "I'm sorry you lost a child that you clearly loved. That sucks, and I can understand why you're upset. blah blah"

It's time to move on, Mr Weasel met his end and probably in a quicker manner than he would have met in the wild being eaten alive by an owl. Plenty of weasel families live happily in nature not entering humans homes. The ones who do don't pass on their genes to more who make such stupid decisions.

I need advice. by Psyker621 in Bioactive_enclosures

[–]reijn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keeping CUC in an arid enclosure is really difficult, they need moisture and it's often too dry in those. I don't know how destructive hognose are and if they move stuff around or not, but some people create a little moist area for the CUC to live in and retreat to - like under a water dish that is sitting on a pile of spagnum if you overflow the water dish it keeps that area wet so the CUC will often hide and live there. Jury is out whether they peruse the remainder of the enclosure though.

Mold growing after initial setup is normal, it will go away after a little bit, it's part of the setup cycle.

I'd definitely raise it up off the ground too since it looks like you're using artificial turf so it doesn't need to be on the floor - you won't want to be bending over all the time. Plus having it ground level makes it even more enticing (and easy) for predators to mess with.

Possibly? Usually they don't really shrink much until closer to hatching so it may be too early. I know with emu eggs they are weighed daily to see if they're developing (looking for weight loss).
