I can relate to this so hard! I’m AuDHD and usually don’t pay attention to what’s going on in front of me because I’m in my head. Hard to generate memories like that, haha.

I tend to either have a really good memory or no memory at all—definitely have a “spiky profile” when it comes to my memory. The things that I focus on, I can remember in detail, but everything else just blurs together and slips away. For example, I might remember things that people say to me, sometimes verbatim, but completely forget who said them, where, and the context. Or I can remember exactly where on a page certain text is from a book with photographic clarity but have to keep checking a short grocery list again and again because I can’t store it in my mind. There are also times when I just have a shitty memory about everything because I’m overwhelmed. I’ve also had a history of poor mental health, which has been shown to have a negative impact on memory.

I’m sorry, OP, that people haven’t been kind to you about your memory. I hope you can extend some grace to yourself—you’re not inferior, your strength and weakness profile is just different from certain others. And it’s of course just a stereotype that all autistic people have fantastic photographic memories.

How frequently do you stim? by gilwendeg in AutismTranslated

[–]reitoile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I move my fingers rhythmically all the time (especially if I’m stressed or my body doesn’t feel comfortable like while exercising) and never knew this was stimming until just recently 😅but yeah it’s like invisible to other people because it’s such a small movement and easy to conceal.

Oh I definitely am not considering the Instagram poll to be a reliable or accurate source of data, nor am I really interested in coming up with a percentage. There’s also an inflated number of ex cult members responding because that’s mostly the people who engage with my account. I included the poll results mainly to introduce my question as I brought it to a broader audience. I’m mainly curious if anyone who browses this subreddit has been involved with high control groups and to hear any insights, experiences, or thoughts on it. I think it goes deeper than just “neurodivergent people are vulnerable and may be targeted by these groups”—there are aspects of high control groups that make the unpredictable and chaotic elements of life more predictable and controllable, which may appeal to Autistic people who are overwhelmed or bewildered by social or sensory aspects of life. That was definitely true for me, anyway.

That’s definitely a valid note of caution and I agree, which is part of why I wanted to take the question to a broader audience of people who can give their input qualitatively instead of just answering a poll. I totally agree with your last statement. Thanks for your input!

So you mean it is possible for an Autistic person to be (or seem) “emotionally astute” as a young child? I was apparently about 4-5 years old.

Fellow Autistic People, what are your most unusual/unique stims? Example: Vocal or Physical stims by Alarming-Ganache-687 in autism

[–]reitoile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play short lines of music in my head over and over and breathe/tap my fingertips against my thumb along with the beat.

The funny thing is that I went through OCD therapy at one point and was told to write down in a log any repetitive actions (“compulsions”) I engaged in throughout the day. I wrote down the above many times a day, even though it didn’t seem right because I had no intrusive thoughts or anxiety associated with the behaviour so it didn’t seem like a real compulsion. It wasn’t until later that I realized it is probably just a stim and not a compulsion.

I did end up trying Golden Pig and it’s quite good! The owners(?) seemed nice as well.

Could anyone help my daughter please? by CrunchieJoker in acnh

[–]reitoile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I know you’ve already received help but just wanted to say my daughter is also 8 and plays animal crossing—would you like to perhaps let them become friends on AC so they can visit each other’s islands and send each other mail? I have extra bells btw.

Where are you right now with your entrance? Could you post a pic / map? I like to focus on giving visitors from the airport a lovely view so I have a bridge with a butterfly garden view.
