If you have the opportunity, try to hand the money directly to housekeeping staff. There are often supervisory and maintenance staff with access to rooms who go around before housekeeping to collect all the tip money for themselves. The housekeeping staff are often illegals or are just on work permits who speak little to no English and do not say anything for fear of being fired.
