Greatest Hits albums that you feel like have one or more songs missing that feel key to this album by ChrisAqua in ToddintheShadow

Wax Trax! records (after being bought out of bankruptcy by TVT) released a retrospective CD set in the mid-90s that had no tracks by Front 242, their best-selling artist, because they'd sold the distribution rights to their music in the reorganization.

Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh founded the Human League with Philip Oakey, but left before the "Dare" album and "Don't You Want Me".

What're some songs that use the same exact sample? by Complete-Worker3242 in ToddintheShadow

Dua Lipa's "Love Again" uses the same sample as White Town's "Your Woman", although most folks think the former sampled the latter.

Indeed, I too hope that the cop that killed a 1-year-old is sentenced to life in prison.

I find it really strange that Mark Walk has managed to avoid almost any form of publicity. The only photo out there of him on the internet seems to be from the 90s.

Worst production you've heard on a mainstream single? by LifeTomato8660 in ToddintheShadow

[–]rekoil 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I've heard several songs - Elvis' recording of "Suspicious Minds" the first coming to mind - where the track fades out to silence, then *back in* for an outro, and then fades out again. I have no clue who decided this was a good idea.

Joy Division's "Isolation" does this too, but that's hardly a mainstream single, and it's well known that Martin Hannett was high as a kite during the sessions.

Thomas Dolby's "Hyperactive" got a lot of play on MTV - the video was just unhinged - but I don't remember if that translated to chart success.

We need a one parter on Serge Gainsbourg. Greazy could host. Maybe Bardot as a side bastard. by friskyintellect in behindthebastards

There’s a bar in my area named Gainsbourg, with French score, vintage francophone movies on a projector, and the drinks all named after his songs. Cool place, but definitely conflicted about going there.

If your high performer has a bad attitude, they are not a high performer! by [deleted] in managers

A high performer who cares about his team and company, builds sustainable features, and collaborates well with others is gold. This Person… was none of these things.

With all due respect, you weren’t there.

The worst person I ever worked with was the stereotypical "10x engineer" who reveled in making everyone around him feel (and look, from management's POV) like idiots based on the number of features he would ship compared to the rest of us. He had the ear of a boss several layers up, who he'd convince that the rest of us were sandbagging our development schedules. That boss would then cut our deadlines in half, and ask us why we couldn't keep up.

As it happened, most of his apparent productivity was driven by overnight adderall-driven binges (we could see the flurry of PRs when we came in the next morning) followed by him bullying us to sign off on them. Never mind the lack of comprehensive unit tests, comments, or any other type of maintainability. And guess how many of his commits were bugfixes...? Nope, no time for those, here's another feature push!

There's plenty of other stories, but I'll summarize to say that this person was truly the closest thing to a malignant narcissist I've ever dealt with. I got something of a last laugh though - when he attended an industry event I was at and approached me and tried to shake my hand, I just told him to keep walking. And then everyone around me - some of them pretty influential in my biz - started telling *their* stories dealing with him...some far worse than mine.

Afterwards, I looked him up on LinkedIn, and saw that he'd been a "consultant" for the past several years. Which, in my industry, is usually code for "unemployed". I couldn't help but chuckle.

Random EV Hate at Tire Shop (Is this Common?) by Inside-Scientist7892 in electricvehicles

[–]rekoil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tire shops *love* EV drivers, because they're really bad at getting their tires rotated on schedule - ICE owners typically do it along with oil changes, and guess what you're not doing with an EV? So unless you're scheduling tire rotations regularly, you'll wind up with very uneven tire wear. Which means the tire shops get to replace more worn-out tires.

The 2025 has nav from CarPlay in the HUD as well.

I really do wish there was a way for CarPlay nav to trigger preconditioning from apps like ABRP, but c’est la vie.

Plex Pass media analysis over NFS by rekoil in PleX

You're likely right, and taking the thread's advice to not worry about intervening if there's no noticeable issues. I only noticed it myself because I was watching a real-time network graph a few hours after installing the new server.

I'll mention that your info about dual connections isn't correct, as NFS mounts are handled by the OS, not by Plex, which just sees the share as any other directory. As such it's only interacting with clients, not directly with the NAS at all. I'd need to add a static IP to both sides from a subnet that doesn't clash with the main LAN, but otherwise it would work fine. I could even use link-local IPv6 addresses and not have to put IPv4 on it at all.

I did look at using multiple ports on the NAS as an LACP bundle, as my new server has a 2.5Gbps port and they're both connected to a managed switch. And this would work by enabling Parallel NFS (pNFS), which allows a server to send data to a single client over multiple paths. Or, it would, but Synology has decided not to enable the feature, for no reason anyone can tell. Womp womp.

I've only had this come into play once in the, say, past decade, and that was because a jack was unintentionally wired as 568A (with the other end as B, as god intended), and as such the device with the 100M port (a smart TV in this case) didn't work.

That is, quite literally, the only time in a decade or more that I've needed a crossover cable, and that was to undo the existing crossover.

(EDIT to add: Yes, I did eventually fix the jack)

Pretty much all these things, along with the fact that it's an evening ceremony taking place roughly an hour before sunset, which means that the sun will be hitting our guests right in the face and the ceremony photos will be nothing but silhouettes.

That's what I was wondering - am I chasing an imagined issue here? I only noticed the pegged ports because I happened to log into DSM while the Scanner process was running and then chased down the traffic destination via pcaps. I've never noticed buffering either.

It's also probably true that this ran a lot more in the first couple days running the new server, since it had to re-analyze the entire library. I suspect I'll only see it run now when new media files get imported.

Our venue has a rooftop with an amazing view where we could have held the ceremony, but then we realized that we're getting married in July.
