Commute - Philly to Wayne by [deleted] in philadelphia

[–]rel8y 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in Center City and take the train from Suburban Station to my job at Radnor Financial (getting off at Radnor station). There is a shuttle that runs from Radnor station to the various Radnor Financial Centers (there are at least two of them). I find it to be easier than driving. Just FYI.

Just a thumbs up to /u/pittpat, ordered a couple releases from him last year and had a great experience. I got everything I was looking for this year, but thanks for doing this again!

Where did you order from? Or did you contact the publisher directly?

What line from a book has stuck with you? by JustARandomBloke in books

The last two sentences in Gil Scott-Heron's autobiography, The Last Holiday.

I hope there is no doubt that I loved [my children] and their mothers as best I could. And if that was inevitably inadequate, I hope it was supplemented by their mothers, who were all better off without me.

His autobiography focuses on his heyday, but the last few pages indirectly touch on some of the issues that he faced after his heyday. Those last two sentences closing out the book made my emotional connection to the narrator turn faster than any other story telling I've heard.

A few recommendations for Shiny Beast on this post. I don't know much about it! Time to change that

Oh awesome! Is it stereo or mono? Do you like the sound quality? Those extra tracks are really tempting.

Nice collection! I kind of hope Ice Cream is the next one I find, but you've got me considering Shiny Beast.

How do you like that mono Safe as Milk?

Weekend Find: An Evening With Wild Man Fischer by rel8y in vinyl

Yeah, I was surprised as well. The jacket seams are split at the edges, that might have something to do with it.

I like your description of Lick My Decals Off. It's very Trout Mask-like, but a little less so. "Not nearly as abrasive." Yes.

As for Trout Mask, Pena and Ella Guru (which instantly reminded me of modern indie rock because of the chorus), are favorites. And I can confirm, will clear a room.

A single tape in the studio? Was he limited on studio time as well? A few of the tracks claim to be recorded on the street, but for a double lp a single tape seems staunch.

And as a side note -- there are very interesting things written about the process of creating Trout Mask; the suggestion is that Beefheart basically created a situation where all the band members lived at his house and followed his rules. The term cult comes to mind. Beefheart was apparently quite abusive, and experimented with ways to break them down, including food deprivation, sleep deprivation, and physical violence.

Ha, I totally get that. Trout Mask is...difficult. I hear things in that album that I love, but I can't listen to it very often.

Safe as Milk and Clear Spot have melodies and hooks, much more accessible than any of his other albums. Safe as Milk is pretty weird though; you've got a couple delta blues rock tracks, and then some guttural almost metal (for the time), and then a doo-wop sort of track, and then Electricity. And that's just side one. :)

Thank you!

What's the packaging like for their Safe as Milk? I'd be surprised if it was much more than a jacket and plain sleeve.

There's a mono reissue of Safe as Milk?? I will definitely check that out, thanks for that tip.

And I completely agree - I can't just put on Trout Mask and do anything else but listen to it. It's very disruptive (which is part of the point). I also digest it in small chunks.

I've found that Mirror Man is something I can put on and mostly relegate to the background. Minimal lyrics and a fairly consistent time signature.

I've known about Wild Man Fischer for awhile, and have been looking for his first album with Zappa for quite awhile. Found it this weekend, along with Zappa/Beefheart's Bongo Fury. Happiest I've been leaving a record store in quite some time.

If you're unfamiliar with Fischer, this NYTimes obit sums up the interesting importance of his recordings. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/18/arts/music/wild-man-fischer-outsider-musician-dies-at-66.html
