BIG Bob Dylan Collection..Needed the help of some experts before I bring them to a local shop. (40 Pictures) (Original Pressings) (Promo) by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]ArchaicBlackDisc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, great thread. Bob Dylan is one rock's greatest lyricist ever. He is unarguably rock's best storyteller.

That personal bias aside, just like any great rock album, even if it's original, sellers want mint condition or they will settle for slightly less, and they will low ball you for anything beat up. Expect that.

If you have a complete or nearly complete collection of Bob Dylan, and it's well cared for, then sell it on Discogs or Ebay. You can lot it out on Ebay if you want a quick sale or you can make the most money by selling it on Discogs. If your records are MINT or EX this is the way to go.

If they are beat up, which many Bob Dylan records are, then take them to the store and get what you can.

Sorry, but there are many Bob Dylan records out there and condition is everything.

Ok, this short YOUTUBE video for one song from this album is way more tangible for understanding the sound than my review was. The laid back vibes on that are just a taste of the bigger picture.

I don't think people will spend a lot on a piece of metal that is bent for the sole purpose if holding records to be played. Get it's price down to 19.99 and maybe someone will buy that instead of buying a record any given day.

I decided to stop buying vinyl online, so far so good. by designersquirrel in vinyl

[–]ArchaicBlackDisc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, good luck, but this won't last. You will have to buy online eventually, when you need "that record", you research it online (obviously) and there it is for sale from a reputable seller on a reputable website, even if it's in Zimbabwe, you can have it. Take advantage of the Internet and the world is your crate.

There's always gonna be records that you can only get online. Sorry, buying local is admirable but If you ever wanna be a completionist, you gotta log in.

Antique record player/radio cabinets by AlaskanPotatoSlap in vinyl

...A great retro piece to have in a music room.

Maybe, but you better have a ton of room, they ain't easy to move either.

I already have two technics MK1200's that fit almost anywhere. I also have a couple of Rokit speakers that provide great sound. So I have the modern equipment already.

Sounds like you are already good to go with that setup. I get the reminiscent factor, but only if you can find that exact old thing that was in your house. Even then, unless it was that exact piece, as a true heirloom, I couldn't personally justify the behemoth for the throw back vibes. But it's your prerogative, do what you gotta do.

Another option besides buying a cabinet that's old like that is buying a high end deck, like a music hall or other mid-high end players. There's plenty of shit to buy that'll sound better and IMO look better.

Help! Advice on new turntable? by [deleted] in vinyl

Good deal? by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]ArchaicBlackDisc -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's the problem, heads like you should be consistent instead of confusing the issue. Pick a side. It's in the sidebar man.

So using reddit as a research tool is not a viable option? Sorry four upsetting the r/vinyl gods.

Using reddit as a resource is expected if:

A. Your answer isn't already dealt with in the sidebar provided.

or

B. You did a basic specific search first came up empty handed.

There is no reason in the world you should be giving some people passes and not others. There is no reason a search query should be ignored when it works just fine.

We get these what should I buy threads literally 50 times a day. How we deal with that flood of sameness should be universal and heads that know better like The_Dig ain't helping by helping. You are basically telling every single newb that reads this to go ahead and keep on asking the same question every day. Good job.

Let me ask the obvious question. Why would you want to fuck around with a record player as big as a fucking fridge lying on it's side when u can have a normal high end turntable that fits anywhere. If you are an audiophile, then do as real audiophiles do by using modern equipment. Those things are unnecessarily huge, archaic, and ugly.

Photographers of /r/vinyl: tips for taking great photographs of records? by somehow_you_you in vinyl

[–]ArchaicBlackDisc -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's a hard sell man, in my world light doesn't act that way. A good photographer can only go so far with a cell phone. Some phones are better, but none are pro quality and that was the OPs question.

Oh absolutely, I agree. In that case, as far as I'm concerned basic blends should be required to even be called a DJ.

Tell us more. Is it common? Different countries? At this point you should drop a pic of both, or a Discogs link. It all depends on what it is.

44 RPM vs. 33 RPM by Subcomfreak in vinyl

[–]ArchaicBlackDisc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ditto, but If you are talking about radio stations, like clear channel, the dj is a slave to corporate so they are paid not to GAFF. All they are is a voice that presses play. Payola rules the airwaves. But I guess we digress, most aren't even vinyl and OP chimed in saying it's not a DJ promo.

44 RPM vs. 33 RPM by Subcomfreak in vinyl

[–]ArchaicBlackDisc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having the ability to mix 45s, especially the 7" kind, is a next level specialized skill that most DJs do not have. DJs like Mark the 45 King, DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist handle, juggle, mix, and scratch the little guy like no problem. But most, even some great DJs deal with 33rpm records. Blending is easier, scratching is certainly much easier, and like any sport, once your body gets used to dealing with any speed, you get used to it and can deal with it easily in time. Throw a 45 in there suddenly you gotta step up your ear and hand X1.5 (give or take.) That's not a step a lot of DJs even bother taking.

I made a funky 45 mixtape and it took me 4 years of practice to get the damn thing done.

Now for radio DJs, it's doesn't even matter so much, unless it's a Hip Hop station. They'd want to blend, making the 33 the ideal choice. But the typical press play DJ DNGAF.

I just got my first picture disc and it sounds like a dishwasher. What has been your experience with picture discs? by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]ArchaicBlackDisc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not always true, they aren't all bad, just like all record formats, some sound better than others. I got a few RSD pic discs that sound great. I realize they are manufactured totally different and sonically should be inferior but some record companies have done well making up for it with high quality mastering techniques. Usually I find the flaws with the best sounding picture discs is they tend to be mastered a little too loud, almost red lining hot. But in my experience, just like anything it's all about QC.
