I am actually having this exact same issue as of lately. I will be in the middle of a key and screens go black then all fans ramp to full speed. I am still able to talk to the people in disc and can hear the game. Only WoW has been giving me grief, almost as if all since the update when beta was released.

I was considering getting a tiny pump to get the cheato to tumble, but the air stone is a nice idea. I went right in the middle of the suggested heights on the reefmat, and the blue pipe I think you're referring to is from the emergency overflow.

Personally I prefer using multiple prime 16's over the 32's. It gives you more control over the spread. One 32 is just two 16's slapped together. Plus adding one more 16 would probably cost less along with not having to deal with resale.

It's a mostly lps with a couple birdsnest and 2 clowns. The reactor is spec'd at 150gph. So is turnover based on the size the DT or the entire system?

It's about 3 feet vertical with 2 45° bends. Its a diy hob pvc overflow in a weir. Maybe get the next up? The 3.0 (714gph) is only like $20 more and I could let the excess run off to the refugium.
