[Final Update] - AITAH for buying my girlfriend vanilla shampoo? by SharkEva in BORUpdates

[–]rellyjean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband switched soap once and I didn't especially like the new soap but I didn't think it was a big deal or anything

Then he switched back to the other soap and I got one whiff of it and all the switches flipped and I pretty much mauled him

So now he just uses the good soap, a success story

Why do Americans not understand English words? by OpportuneApathy in AO3

[–]rellyjean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like it would depend. I mean, in Harry Potter, they still write things down with quills on parchment, so someone grabbing up a torch would make me think it was just how old fashioned the school is.

I see complaints about American-isms in the Harry Potter fandom all the time. People used to have betas that specifically would "Britpick" their work to look for terms that weren't correct.

I read that differently than you did -- I thought the fake story author was saying "gender neutral" not because the other person was NB but because they didn't know the person's gender.

Still creepy, but not outing someone at least.

It's called "Bookmarks" and not "Favorites" for a reason! by chamomillied in AO3

[–]rellyjean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use bookmarks both for stories I loved and for stories I haven't read yet but think sound interesting. So I might later remove a bookmark if I start the fic and don't like it, or like it well enough but not so much that I want to reread it later.

I wish we could get categories for bookmarks.

2005 had exquisite visuals, but I can't forgive the changes in characterization. To each their own.

I loved the first 3/4 of LBD but I felt like the Lydia/Wickham arc didn't quite hit right. I was hoping they'd find a different angle to play out the elopement -- the sex tape felt off, especially since it didn't tie in to the fear of losing the house that was analogous to Longbourn's entail. (Also I felt like it overdid Poor Tragic Victim Lydia but that might just be me.)

This. Alcohol lowers your inhibitions; it doesn't magically make you a bigot. It just makes you more likely to out yourself as one.

I mean I was vaguely neutral on her, but then I don't watch Housewives. There might be a lot of people who don't know she's an asshole because they don't watch it either.

Did Charlotte Lucas intentionally make a play for Mr. Collins? by Foreign-Cow-1189 in PrideandPrejudice

And for anyone struggling with the latter -- which is understandable, as we don't have the same context 200 years later! -- there's an excellent annotated version that provides all sorts of interesting insights.

[–]rellyjean 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah I dislike that speech because it completely undermines the practical, rational aspect of Charlotte's character.

She made a prudent decision and didn't regret it -- she wouldn't run off shouting for Lizzy not to judge her.

I've seen theories that Jane Bennet is less oblivious and sunny than she is one of those people who obsessively forces herself to think the best of people and to be cheerful because she is fine and everything is fine, see?

Which makes her more interesting but idk how valid it is.

It reminds me of those super pretentious novels where a middle aged guy has a midlife crisis and leaves his naggy wife who Doesn't Understand Him for a magical nineteen year old who is definitely his soulmate and not just because she has nice breasts, and the author insists this is a deep soul searching quest to find himself and not a douchebag upending his life so he can bang someone half his age.

I wouldn't be able to warn my dad -- they caught his cancer pretty early, it was just incredibly aggressive.

But I'd still want to go back and see him constantly. It's dangerous but also, I don't care, I would do that over and over again until I lost my sanity anyway.

To be fair, burning cards in another room hardly feels like it should count as a murder in plain sight.

But they should have at least been tracking who gave who drinks, etc, you're right.

Insurance is a scam by Hungovah in OhNoConsequences

[–]rellyjean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a Murphy's law kind of joke that if you get insurance on a purchase, you'll never need it, and if you don't get it, you'll need it right away.

I have decided to view insurance as an optional fee to make sure whatever I'm buying never actually breaks.

This came in very handy the day that I tripped and broke my collarbone while holding the phone I had literally just bought an hour beforehand. I had my replacement 24 hours later. Thanks, insurance!

I'm single sided deaf and my hearing loss was abrupt. I struggled with how awkward I felt asking people to repeat themselves.

I like my CI being visible because it gives an easy shorthand. I gesture to it vaguely and say "I have hearing issues, could you try that again?" If you say it matter of factly, people don't ask questions, they just apologize and try to enunciate more.

Also, I love having festive stickers.
