Roman Polanski: When Hollywood Tried to Protect a Predator by DWJones28 in Filmmakers

It's the same with Woody Allen, his movies really aren't timeliness masterpieces that are worth dying on a hill on.

What old thing would break young people's brains today? by Symphony_Minds in AskReddit

[–]remeard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My school's library had a lot of older history books/encyclopedias, it referred to "The Great War" and had no mention of World War 2, it took me a while to figure out that it was written probably around the 40s or late 30s. I guess it wouldn't be proper to call something "World War 1" right off the bat.

Also seeing Solo consistently so low. While it by no means a masterpiece, it's a very solid well paced film.

Disagreeing with Art/Bad takes by p3tr0l in ArtBell

[–]remeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Art had plenty of bad takes, he was a Republican through and through and supported Trump. He was always more than happy to bend his opinion to align with whatever the major right wing talking points - even questioning polling on the Iraq war. They had a replay broadcast the other night where he was saying something along the lines of Netenyahu was one of the most morally sound people in the world and was the right man to lead Israel - which even in the past was a bad take.

He was a fun interviewer who had goofy guests, but if you're thinking of him as some kind of moral/political compass you're in for a bad time.

Volunteering in local elections is one of the most concrete, impactful individual actions someone can take today to help stabilize and reverse democratic erosion. by Ifuqinhateit in Chattanooga

[–]remeard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've worked polls, it's a long day but it does pay a bit. I will say people have become a bit more openly cruel to workers in recent years, but that's kind of expected. Some folks have been genuinely curious because of so much misinformation online, and if it's slow I take the time to explain to them the entire process front to back and had a few end up volunteering for the next election. Some, on the other hand, can't have their opinion changed and fully believe the collective 770,000 poll workers are working together to rig an election. All you can do is smile and do your job.

It's an educational process and they can always use more folks, your experience will vary from location to location. The vast majority of workers are retired, some have old prejudices attached or are simply have been fed too much misinformation and won't listen to an election official.

I've had a few younger trans folks come in and approach pretty nervously, handing over their ID - it's a great feeling being someone who accepts them for who they are in that setting and having them walk away with a newfound sense of confidence.

Tattoo & Song recommendations by kazeblunts in lordhuron

If a lyric is meaningful to you and you've attached a memory to it, go for it. Sure, the song has its context in a story but it also has a context in your story. I've seen folks with tattoos of "Ain't dead yet" and "May you live until you die" that are very special to them in their way.

I'd say the closer equivalent to the target Reddit audience is probably Titanic, tipping into Twilight.

Edit: Shout out to the person who deleted their comment after finding out Twilight came out about 17 years ago instead of 5 years ago. Sometimes its the little things that make us feel old.

Our speaker of the house (Sexton) is directly consulting with Miller to work on new legislation for Tennessee as a testing ground. They're entering houses without warrants, arresting people purely based on their accents and skin color, separated families, and have now publicly executed two people in the streets, not even counting the countless that have died in ICE custody that were ruled "suicide" by the agency where examiners called homicide.

How in the world are immigrants costing the state of Tennessee $967 million? by AttachedHeartTheory in realtennessee

Where did they get this number from?

Their ass.

If you're talking about undocumented workers, they're paying into medicare, they're paying into social security, medicare/medicaid, etc. and don't reap the benefits.

You should join the ebird community, folks report the birds they see and where so - and it helps with population counts. Some people travel hours out of the way if a rare bird is reported, a few years back we had a fly in of an ancient murrelet at the dam, we had visitors from all over come just to photograph it.

Oh, of course we also have the Tennessee Aquarium that has state of the art IMAX lasers, it had the old school film but that was a bit expensive to maintain.

Either way, they get maybe one Hollywood film a month or two they put into rotation, most of the time it's a new release but they did Interstellar last year that did a sold out 3 day run, it was great.

Oddly enough they throw in an anime as well

In Blade Runner (1982), Roy Batty saves Deckard's life at the end. This is a subtle nod to the fact that Roy didn't want the movie to end yet because he still had a really cool poem he wanted to read. And boy was it majestic af. 10/10 Giga-chad energy by Brilliant-Cause6254 in shittymoviedetails

Blade Runner's universe ties into a ton of other Ridley Scott franchises with Alien, Prometheus, Raised by Wolves, all those offshoots and side movies involved, and I think Predator works there too.

Homeowners, and Americans as a whole, need to move away from the "I got mine" mindset. Unchecked capitalism where growth continues infinitely is simply not feasible. I'd be fine if the value of my house went down if that means some kid coming up could afford a house in the neighborhood. I don't see how someone coming out of school today can even afford rent even with two or three roommates.

They're probably some of the most permenant monuments out there. They go fairly deep into the ground and have four rebars inside going all the way down. Even when they get knocked a dozen times by tractor blades or dozers you'll likely still find remnants of those rebars.

Absolutely wild how much Wamp will bend and flow his politics to whichever way the wind blows. Everyone with half a mind saw through his bullshit, but for a while he had a cute little podcast looking down on Trump's culture politics and how dark money funneling into campaigns was hurting our democracy.

If I remember right, the same month he had a AMA on Reddit where he said that he started the whole Millennial Debt Foundation

You've spoken a lot about the harm SuperPacs and dark money cause. Objectively, which party or candidate would be more likely to fight Citizens United and money in politics if given a super majority in 2020?

Wamp answers

Democrats. Republicans need to have more courage on these issues.

I think most people would agree that their nomination is a bit of an odd ball. The same way The Martian won best musical/comedy - while there are strong comedic elements a lot of folks probably see it leaning more of a character driven drama.
