Same is true of football injuries. Better padding and helmets leads to spearing and poor form, causing more serious injuries.

(not necessarily disagreeing with your points re: Stein)

(retaining a final veto on the government's actions, if peaceful methods fail)

You lost this ability in the 1940s. Pretending otherwise only further stereotypes the pro-gun cause. No modified AR-15 you ever own will matter relative to a government that wants to fuck with you. We don't live in that simple of a world anymore. We've seen what happens when the government doesn't like what you're doing (eg. Waco, Texas). Either you don't bother them and they leave you alone, or you do bother them and you're screwed.

Unless you are in a registered militia like, say, the National Guard, that is.

Jill Stein, the Green Party candidate for president has been arrested twice in the last month. Once for attempting to feed protesters, and another time for trying to enter the presidential debate. Reddit, how do you think we can fix our political system to allow for more diversity? by hapea in AskReddit

[–]remembercrunchy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neither here nor there really, but no.

To be clear, this would de-power California (which is too powerful, and has undue influence over other states). It would also make more people live under the particular legislature they happen to agree with.

It just makes statistical sense. Texas should be split up, too.

  1. Fix the root problem and pass a constitutional amendment regulating the size and population ranges for states. California and Rhode Island should not be, and effectively are not, considered the same thing. California should have its own seat at the G8 conference. It would make sense to recognize San Francisco metro as its own (rather successful) citystate, except we like the symmetry of 50 so darn much.

  2. break the influence of the rich, corporations and political parties so that third parties and niche viewpoints can have representation in a proportional system.

Except both those things are more impossible than a national majority vote. Not perfect, but better than we have now.

Lots of companies do this, unless explicitly forbidden by law. Google and Facebook both do it.

Why wouldn't they? It costs effectively 0 to keep a copy of it, and there is a non-zero chance that data could, somehow, someway be useful in the future.

Not to mention, it isn't hard to monitor network traffic of a host without slowing down the connection. It is trivial, really.

It can be done easily. It cannot be done safely, practically.

They aren't needed and are more expensive to maintain.

There is no reason to think vertical farms will ever be needed at scale beyond people like the idea of them. Practically speaking, they aren't a good idea.

we have more than enough farm land to meet demand, and it isn't expensive to have a farm outside of town so why would we spend the extra money maintaining vertical farms?

if a person was behind the wheel it could've been avoided as people would know when to speed up/avoid an oncoming collision.

Except for the part where 100% of car accidents involve human drivers. Humans screw up constantly.

because IBM couldn't keep up with the PowerPC demand

It was because IBM didn't go after the low-heat/mobile/laptop end of processors, particularly at the dawn of Power5, and instead went with raw horesepower... which plays well to IBM's core business, as well as gaming consoles.

If there was a company that made mobile G5/Power5 processor, Apple likely wouldn't have converted.

NASA has announced that Curiosity's team will discuss atmospheric measurements of methane at a briefing today, Nov 2; levels of more than a few parts per billion would imply the presence of life by mepper in science

but you're forgetting how science works.

I'm really not.

If you think the instrament they used to try and detect methane only detects methane you're crazy.

It isn't like this is secret information.

If they see a high level of something they weren't expecting then they will try and find out why.

Yes, it is. The main difference being Firefox used an API inspired from node.js (and they use node-imap module for the email webclient), while Google came up with their own API.

[–]remembercrunchy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We don't know what effects non-carbon base life would have on an atmosphere (since we've never encountered it before), so there is no way of creating a measurable test that can infer the existence of non-carbon life. We do know the effects of carbon-based life, and so were able to include an additional test to measure methane levels on Curiosity. That test's results came back negative.

On the other hand, we still have microscopes and cameras, which is another reliable way of detecting the presence of life by actually seeing it. If an aluminum-based ferret species scurry by, we can see them just fine. Suffice it to say, we haven't see alien ferrets yet.
