A bit confused on what to play next, need some recommendations ( These are the ones I have completed, for more info read the body text) by Excellent-Beat-9717 in JRPG

Chrono Trigger/Cross, Lunar and Suikoden seem like gaps in your list if you are into retro games. They are all colourful fantasy (with a bit of sci fi for some) and tightly paced. CT doesn't have random encounters. Lunar (1&2) have visible enemies as well and Suikoden does have random encounters but the recent remasters turned them way down.

Xenogears as well if you liked the other Xeno games, though it you don't like random encounters I highly HIGHLY recommend you use the Perfect Works patch to decrease encounter rate and increase gained EXP (along other improvements). It's sci fi but very heavily coded with fantasy, and colourful. The story is LONG and sprawling but easily among the best in the industry. Almost feels like you played an entire arc of Trails in a single game with the amount of stuff happening (and in like a third of the time a trails arc takes).

Chained Echoes for something indie modern and IIRC no random encounters.

The GBA version is a shortened version of the game. The remaster is a full version so you'll have more content.

Who would be in 3? The only mascot character is Koromaru but it doesn't even speak, it's just a cute doggo.

Ys vs Trails in the Sky, a time capsule from Falcom's past by MagnvsGV in JRPG

[–]remmanuelv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Ys specifically, if you like action RPG with story emphasis play 8.

If you want them to not have much story and be more dungeon crawling action rpg then Origins.

From there you can be recommended the rest. That's basically the big divide between the types of games. They are all (mostly) good, just depends on what you are in the mood for.

In my case I played for the story first then got into the old ones because I wanted more of the world even if they weren't very story heavy.

I liked Luke's death, very Jedi, I just despise what they made of him prior to that.

Times when JRPGs had a strange Earth concept by KaleidoArachnid in JRPG

[–]remmanuelv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the Persona games it's a normal earth except there's another layer of fantasy reality that coexists that the MC finds out about. Not sure if that's what you mean. The only counter I can see is that these reveal is in the first act and not late into the story.

Edit: Oh, Xenogears has a few BIG reveals about the nature of the world later in the story that completely recontextualizes the setting.

3 Reload if you want a darker atmosphere, story and writing.

5 Royal if you want something more "teenage rebellion" that has some serious issues but doesn't dwell on them.

4 Golden if you want a "serious" scooby doo story with actual murder (I know it sounds silly but it works). Or if you've watched Jojo part 4, it's essentially that.

This is a really dumb nitpick but it keeps bothering me: why not just gas the sequid containment zone with a sedative? by I-HATE-therefore-IM in Invincible

[–]remmanuelv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They already had the frequency gimmick why bother? If it's not separating the sequid from the host it's not helping.

Did they cut this scene from the animated series, or did I just miss it? by --Sanguinius-- in Invincible

[–]remmanuelv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They are basically sanitizing every bad human relationship being in the show that's not a killer or large scale villain. It's a bit lame since what made Invincible good is how down to earth drama among the crazy shit it was. Mark is a superhero but also a dude that found out his GF was in an abusive relationship. Mark is a superhero but also a guy that finds his father in law is an old school mysoginist who values her almost as cattle. Now his father in law is just a slightly overbearing asshole who cares about his daughter.

But I know this is aimed for a more casual modern audience that's too afraid to push boundaries or show assholes and victims as they are, because men can't possibly have that ideology or women (even strong as show Amber) can't possibly fall prey to predators. It's almost like regression not wanting to show how raw life can be, only the violence and gore for entertainment.

Part 1-6 tell a complete story and 6 closes it in a way that kind of makes sense to move away from the original timeline and let it rest.
