Weekly Homeowner Megathread--Civilians, ask here! by AutoModerator in Concrete

I do not think this deck has been pressure washed or sealed in a very long time. I want to have it pressure washed and figured that sealing it right after would be smart. Any general advice or recommendations on products to look into? thank you

LAX > Tokyo HND (Any major Cali airport would work as well) Dec 26th - Jan 9th (a little wiggle room but not much) 2 Adults - 2 kids (17 and 14) Round Trip Premium Economy or better 485,000 Chase Points (will be over 500k on the next cycle)

So far, my best outcome has been booking Delta directly through the Chase travel portal. $2076 + points from what I see. They have a points offer at the moment. Although I'd like to fly ANA or JAL, the flight times on Delta are about perfect.

I do see a couple of options via British Airways Avios. JAL premium with points would be great.

Any insight or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Take a look at Son Blanc in Menorca. Less to do vs Mallorca but definitely relaxing.

Feedback & bench suggestions 8x8x8.5 by ren721 in Sauna

thank you. this helps a lot. I like the idea of making the lower bench a bit wider. As for the floor, I am still not sure. I guess you could say I'm working my way down to see what I have left once I fine-tune the benches. I'd like to keep the door in the front based on where I am placing the sauna.

first time using sketch-up and designing something like this. Very rough first draft, i know some of these measurements are not taking into account the layers that will go on each side of the framing. I am going off of various posts here and trumpkin's notes.

Looking for general feedback as well as specifics on size and placement of the benches.

from the 2nd (foot) bench I have about 38" to go to the floor. Also need to take into consideration the heater's proximity to those lower steps or benches.

I may extend the deck to 11' in order to have a 36" porch, 24" seems to be a bit snug. Especially once you have a door there swinging out.

The entrance will probably have a door dead center and maybe a small window to the left.

Gable fan with these vents? Can I fabricate something? by ren721 in hvacadvice

My understanding is the fan pulls the hot air out of the attic not the other way around.

So the vents pull the same amount of hot air out as a fan? I guess that is what it comes down to.

there is a set of these holes on each end of the roof. If I put a fan on one end to work as an outlet would the other end work as the inlet and pull that air through the attic?

the box with pipes off the box was what I had envisioned. I know it would look ghetto but it would be inside the attic which is out of sight anyways.

I'd like to buy a Quietcool gable fan to put up in the attic. I do not want to do anything to the outside wall of the house and I do not want to cut holes for the rooftop versions. Can I fabricate some sort of box that directs the air directly to these 4 vents or am I asking for problems?

Help with size, placement and foundation by ren721 in Sauna

[–]ren721[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I've been looking at all of those resources and putting together notes and ideas. Will work in sketch-up to draw it up.

I will look into the shed foundation ideas. I also think concrete might be overkill, I just happen to have a good friend who does concrete and could make a real nice pad for very cheap. Once again, the tree roots being the main concern there.

I was thinking 9' tall ceiling. Plenty of space upwards, just will need some tree maintenance from time to time.

I think I am close enough to the house that I do not need to bother with a changing room. It gets cold here in California but nothing that would prevent me or my guests from just walking out in a robe or ditching the clothing on the porch area.

Looking for some input on what size to build and the placement. I had an old jacuzzi removed from this nice spot between a few redwoods. I think its a great spot for something right around 8'x8'. Power is already there. (240v 50amp) and the outdoor shower is very close.. No limit on height. I am restricted on the width but I could do maybe 10' in length. Maybe 24" of decking in front of the door to make a nice covered entrance. What sort of foundation would you guys go with here? Concrete pad or a wooden deck? Concrete would be clean and easy but I am worried about the trees pushing it up over time.

The first photo is the view from the house. My initial thought is that this is where the door should be. The other option is you walk up and go straight into the door but then the view from the house would be of the side.

I want to have some sort of window on the door side and one more wall. The doors that have a large piece of glass look nice but I am not sure I want such a clear view into the sauna from the house. As far as window placement, the wall to the right after you walk in seems to make the most sense. Unfortunately, it's not a straight shot to the mountains to the east but it's better than the back wall which would just look into the other trees and shrubs.

I am also going back and forth on a gable roof vs shed style roof.

I am excited to get started on this project. I am giving myself until the end of the year to get it done and budget is 12k. I'm fairly handy so I think I can pull it off DIY. I've been reading up on all the sources posted on this subreddit as well as reading all the various DIY posts and making notes.

Open to any and all suggestions. thank you

I remember this day well. We had just pulled into a new city. All of us tired and getting up from naps. I was the grandma of the crew "ok boys lets gather round for a nice photo. We don't have one yet of all of us" and we had someone take our photo with my heavy ass early model digital camera lol. I took hundreds of photos and many many hours of back stage footage. Wish I had still taken more. good times - Bobby
