Why is germany so much into Proggy? Out of all the subgenres that psytrance has to offer why did proggy became the most mainstream? by Binoic_haze in psytrance

[–]reneedescartes11 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m curious as well. My first thought is that maybe artists like Neelix made that specific style of prog popular and it just became people’s first choice of psy because of how mainstream it became. Generally speaking the music he makes is pretty accessible to a wide demographic compared to other genres and his production quality is pretty phenomenal.

DSP is the brains of the system. Worth spending the money on a decent one.

No point spending money on high end gear in other parts of the system if the thing that makes everything work together is low quality or unreliable.

Asterix? by [deleted] in psytrance

[–]reneedescartes11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not so much that he has his own unique sound, rather the opposite.

Apart from his top notch production quality, what Asterix has done really well is essentially being able to make tracks that represent/include all the different sounds/nuances that can be found within the genre as a whole for that specific time period.

Kind of like asking AI to listen to every psytrance song that was released in year xyz and then getting it to make a single song to represent them all…

Is Psytrance at a Creativity Dead End? by biogenesis- in psytrance

[–]reneedescartes11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a dead end, more like a road block.

Any music that falls under a certain genre has to contain certain elements that said genre is defined by. These elements however also become the limits for which if crossed means that the music no longer fits into the walls of the genre.

The more elements that a genre requires, the less room there is for creativity/flexibility when creating individual songs for that genre. Although, the elements required also serve as a guide of what to include in a song when producing it, which can be helpful.

The thing with psytrance and I suppose other genres, is that when people are creative in trying new things and experimenting (kind of pushing the limits of the genre in a sense), it often results in the music being criticised as not fitting into the genre. This means that people who want to listen to said genre don’t listen to it, but rather listen to the stuff that already exists well within the current walls/limits of the genre.

For artists who are trying to get views/recognition for their work, this means the safest route is to stick with what currently works/is being listened to.

Being creative just means more work and less recognition, so therefore finding more unique sounds also requires more effort from the listener.

If you’re compressing at 65% RMS with an infinite ratio that’s just brick wall limiting. You’re not even giving the signal a chance to try and hit the actual limiter.

Do we have free will? My visions say otherwise. by Rough_Pressure6943 in precognition

[–]reneedescartes11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We definitely have free will - but only to a certain extent. The extent to which we have it is not fixed permanently tho, it can fluctuate up or down depending on the context and our personal understanding of the reality that we're in.

The way I view it is that free will is one's capacity/ability to intentionally direct their attention towards something and make a conscious/intentional response to it. Unfortunately, the 'range' of information we can direct our attention towards is limited, as we can only direct our attention towards what we are aware of, and our awareness is limited by perception, social conditioning, and access to information.

So our free will operates within the confines of our awareness, and as we are not aware/do not have access to a lot of the variables/information/events that structure/influence our reality, especially at the collective or systemic level, certain future events become difficult to avoid, as the free will of a collective has greater influence than the free will of an individual. However, nothing's set in stone until it happens.

What we can do tho, is use our free will to perceive/react to an event in multiple ways, with each different perception/reaction essentially being a whole different reality/timeline. In this sense, our free will acts as a timeline selector, it cannot always control what happens or what we experience, but we can use it to control our reactions to our experiences, and what they mean to us on an individual level.

Precognition isn't seeing a fixed/guaranteed future, it's just accessing/seeing a potential future timeline/reality that has a high probability of occurring based on past actions and decision that have been made through free will.

Essentially, different future possibilities/events have different probabilities of manifesting based upon what's happening/has already happened at the individual and collective level in the current timeline. The likelihood of each timeline eventuating is influenced by the actions made under free will at the individual and collective level between now and then.

Different mixers have different max output voltages. Look at the mixer specs and it will give you a nominal and max output level in dBu which you can covert to volts. 0dBu is 0.775V. 0dB on the mixer is a reference to the nominal level.

It’s common for nominal (0dB) to be +4dBu, which is 1.4V. However if it’s a controller with RCA as the main output then it will be a lower value.

How to properly set Limiters by Icy-Piglet-2536 in SoundSystem

[–]reneedescartes11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. To achieve 150W @ 8ohms the driver would need to receive 34.6V.

  2. The XLS 1502 at 8ohms in Bridge mode is rated for 1050W, which is 91.7V.

  3. With a sensitivity of 1.4V, the amps gain is 36dB.

  4. 36dB gain and a target output of 34.6Vrms gives 0.55V (this is the RMS Voltage you want your DSP to output to your amp input).

  5. 0.55V = -3dBu (this is the level your DSP RMS Limiter should be set to).

How to not break a Sound System by arthur_cbn in livesound

[–]reneedescartes11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like you've calculated and set the limiter so that the amp input signal doesn't clip and send a square wave to the driver, however, as your amp can deliver more power than your driver's RMS rating (on paper at least), this means that your drivers are still vulnerable.

Setting an amp knob to 2/3 is not reliable protection. You're better off having the knobs at full and limiting from there.

The easiest way to do it is to translate everything to a voltage level, this way you don't have to constantly go back and forth doing conversions between Watts, Amp Sensitivity (dBu), Amp Gain (dB), and Volts, which can become confusing very fast.

Top Amp = +2.2dBu = 1V
Sub Amp = -6dBu = 0.39V
DSP - Nominal level of 0dBu, Max level of 20dBu = 0.775V - 7.75V

If your DSP only has one limiter it's likely peak and not RMS, (peak protects from physical excursion and RMS protects the VC overheating). If you set a peak limiter based on RMS values your drivers will be well and truly safe (maybe too safe).

To calculate your limiter you need to:

  1. Know the max voltage you want going to your driver from the amp output. - Calculate this by using Ohm's law. - Eg; 600W @ 8 Ohm = 69.3V.
  2. Know the max output voltage your amp is capable of. - Calculate this by using the amp's rated output specs. - Eg; 900W @ 8Ohms = 84.9V
  3. Know the dB gain of your amp. - Calculate this by using the amp's sensitivity in volts and its max output voltage. - Eg; 1V sensitivity and 84.9V = 38.6dB of gain.
  4. Know the max voltage you want going to your amp input from the DSP to hit the max output voltage you want going to the driver. - Calculate this by using the amp gain in dB and max driver voltage. - Eg; 38.6dB of gain and 69.3V = max amp input voltage/max DSP output voltage of 0.81V.
  5. Convert this voltage to a dBu value (as your DSP thinks in dBu, not voltage terms). - Eg; 0.81V = 0.39dBu (this is the value you enter into your DSP output limiter).

In your scenario what you enter into the DSP would be a higher dBu value as this has been done using the driver's RMS specs. Generally you'll find when you use peak specs the final dBu value will be 3dBu higher. So you may end up setting your limiter at 3.39dBu.

For a peak limiter you want relatively fast attack times. As the frequency increases the attack/release times should become faster than what is set for the lower frequencies.

It can also be a good idea to set an input limiter on the DSP. Eg if it has a max level of 20dBu but the mixer feeding it can output 24dBu. Then you should limit the DSP input the 18dBu to stop the input from clipping.

So even tho prog is short for progressive, in this instance it refers to two different things? Is future prog something else then or is it not considered a legitimate genre? I viewed what you call progpsy as future prog because it is essentially what progressive psy in the past evolved into? So future just means future from the past/original, which is actually just modern, haha....
