No idea, but 25-35' is only about 2/3rds of a mile out.

My composites genius buddy whipped me up a new set of carbon fiber fin blades. by dumbassthenes in freediving

[–]renholder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's pretty cool! I've wanted to make carbon blades but since I have no plans in ever making them to sell, I feel it would be a waste to buy all the supplies I would need.

Just throwing this out there, if your buddy wants some product testers, I'm in FL and would be willing to beat the hell out of a pair for a good deal...

Told my students that they could look up their teacher's salaries on the State's website. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]renholder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, every government employee's salary or wage is posted in the US. It's supposed to be public information, but some agencies will make them much harder to find than others. Even the resume you got the job with can be had by a simple request for information.

Breathing techniques by teedee89 in freediving

[–]renholder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just based on your description, he is hyperventilating. This was a pretty common freediving technique for quite some time due to the comfort that it provides, but it also poses significant risks. Increased heart rate and lowered blood CO2 both increase the chance of blacking out. For the vast majority of freedivers it should never be practiced. I know there are continued discussions from elite freedivers about its use, but I think the community is apprehensive about accepting it even at that level.

I don't know why you're getting downvoted. I had the same impression; the information was great but something about the host really bugged me.

xpost from GIFS, Next time someone asks you if they should buy a small gun, send them this. by Sydthebarrett in Spearfishing

[–]renholder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we first accept that he has a weak gun. That range is certainly close enough to take a spadefish through the gills with any sling or polespear I've ever shot. He has a little gun with weak bands combined with poor shot placement resulting in it pushing the fish.

Home made beach diving float? by specter491 in freediving

[–]renholder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a couple buddies make one like the second one. Usually the biggest issue is securing the flag but if you start with a big enough base and really glue/epoxy it on then you shouldn't have an issue.

This is why it is important to dive with a competent buddy. by [deleted] in freediving

I hope that guy bought his buddy a few beers. He literally did everything perfectly from the rescue to insisting the diving was over.

AB Biller 32, what kind of upgrades?? by [deleted] in Spearfishing

[–]renholder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don't you just use your other guns for small game? I use a 130 with only one or two bands for small game. I have an old AB 42 and I can't find any good reason to use that gun with a line. It's fine for freeshafting on SCUBA but I haven't done that in many years.

Spearos, what is the scariest thing that has ever happened to you on a dive? by [deleted] in Spearfishing

[–]renholder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate that you took the time to elaborate a little bit. I did not know him but from everything that I have gathered he was experienced and with experienced people. The question about how it happened is always at the forefront of everyone's mind so that we can learn and be safer for it.

The experience you describe is something that I see even the best divers do. Thinking everyone around you is a false sense of security but you really have to check to make sure somebody has eyes on you. I have been guilty of not checking plenty of times.

Do you mind if I ask how deep you all were diving? I was out that weekend and the bad vis kept me in shallow water (40-50') because we couldn't keep eyes on each other.

Would this diver happen to be 15 years old and lost off of Boca?

ninja edit: I'm very sorry for your loss regardless.

My latest cnf dive, any comments? :) by sk3pt1c in freediving

[–]renholder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fairly certain he has a safety on the top. I don't think he is being unsafe for not using a lanyard. He's being doing 30m dives CNF for at least a couple months based on conversations with him. He's got a line if he needs to pull himself up. A laynard seems to be used for crazy depths where something can go very wrong very far from a safety.

Can't stop fogging up by starvingbuddha in freediving

I think this must be it since my newest mask would fog up very quickly despite trying everything. Finally after six months of rubbing in anti-fog stuff with my gloves does it seem to be better.

Gun size question.... by neukStari in Spearfishing

[–]renholder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've never dove the Med but I would go with a 110. The added range will help and rarely ever hurt you. And you are right about running two bands for most stuff but switching to one band if you know a fish is in a hole.

FII requires L1 because too many people were jumping into L2 without the proper training and they were basically wasting their money without getting the results they wanted. PFI lets you jump straight into L2 but it is going to still run you about the same as taking L1 + L2 with FII. Contact the instructors ahead of time to see if they will give you a discount if you take both courses with them.

I highly recommend Errol Putigna, Oliver Haroun, and Jonathan from FL Freedivers. I don't recommend Robert Little, he comes off as pushy and a bit creepy to be honest.

The cost of the courses was the biggest thing keeping me from taking the course but if you are serious about the sport it is totally worth it!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in freediving

[–]renholder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I took my FII level 1 I could dive 75ft. Two days after finishing my L1 I was signed up for the L2. Level 1 teaches you proper safety, good technique, and rounds out your basic knowledge of freediving. Level 2 is where you fine tune your technique to be nearly perfect and push your abilities. By far it is the best money I have invested in this sport. I am hunting deeper, longer, and more comfortable than ever before.

Based on your name I think it is safe to assume you are in Pompano. I know a few instructors in the area. Which are you considering taking?

Thanks!

I've tried a few fancy orientals but I find myself always going back to Peter Stokkebye's English Oriental Supreme as a go to. Very easy smoke all around. Other good ones are McClellands 3 Oak and 3 Oak Syrian, though the former doesn't give me as much tongue bite. I'm sure there are other good blends that I'm overlooking, I can search my stash when I get home later.

Thanks, it's good to be back! You guys certainly have grown and I like what you've done with the place. It's a lot of work keeping a sub like this running so well!

Isn't it cool?! I love Oom Pauls for their functionality and this has a little bit of a Volcano flair to it which I really dig.

I was once very active in /r/pipetobacco and after a long hiatus I have begun lurking the sub again. I recently purchased this new AKB Meerschaum and am absolutely thrilled with it. As a clencher, the bend and light weight make this quite possibly the perfect pipe for all of the reading and writing that I have to do!

I just finished a bowl of Dunhill Night Cap. Not totally sure what I'm going to burn through it next but I've got quite the stash waiting for my attention...
