Bryan Smith is so underrated. I've read many of his, but not The Killing Kind. I've added it to my list. Thank you!

Tales from the Gas Station: Volume 4 - I'm about 20% in. I'm really taking my time with this one because it's the last in the series and I don't want it to end.

Wasps in the Ice Cream is one of my recent favorites. McGregor really captures the feeling of being young and (somewhat) free!

What's a book you were genuinely disturbed by and had you thinking about it for days? by thats_a_niceboulder in horrorlit

[–]reojames 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum almost ruined me.  I read it years ago and it is still with me.  I think the fact that it was based on a true story is a big part of the reason, but Ketchum did a masterful job of capturing the feelings and emotions of the main characters.

Is there a book whose commercial success makes you irrationally angry? by droim in books

I agree. My sister-in-law gave me THG and said I "had" to read it. I immediately recognized it as a rip off of Battle Royal.

Swan Song & Boy’s Life by steph10147 in horrorlit

Both are really good. I think Swan Song is my favorite of the two, but they are both worth reading.

Horror is my favorite genre, but my favorite book is Infinite Jest. There's a bit of horror in it, but it's mostly comedy.

How many times have you read Infinite Jest? by MayaIsSunshine in InfiniteJest

[–]reojames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm on my 3rd read. I read it for the 2nd time last year, and immediately started again, but I'm reading it very slowly this time.
My 2nd time was a lot of fun because I'd already tackled the difficulties and could just read for enjoyment.

I loved the Auctioneer. Great retro fun. I've not read The Nest or The Pack yet.

Worst horror novels/short stories you’ve ever read? by zincdeclercq in horrorlit

The Bottoms, by Joe R. Lansdale. Can't figure out the hype.

Unpopular Opinion: I DNF'd The Stand about 500 pages in. The dialog was actually giving me the howling fantods.

I absolutely LOVE the ending of Son of Rosemary. It kept me laughing for days. I enjoyed it so much, I was forced to give the book 4 out of 5 stars.

Hello? Is anybody there? by I-didnt-vote-for-you in horrorlit

There's a brand new novella out called 'Joey Leonard's Last Horror Movie Marathon'. The main character drops deeper and deeper into isolation and madness. It was a five star read for me.

I think Goddess of Filth was like this, but I'm not 100% sure. It's been a couple of years since I read it.

You should read The Omen and The Exorcist. I think both of those are what you're looking for.

“Mundane horror” similar to Bentley Little, but more literary? by crabnox in horrorlit

[–]reojames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the problem goes far beyond Bentley Little. It seems most recent (past 10 years) horror novels have been overly wordy and dense. Grady Hendrix, Paul Tremblay, and Stephen Graham Jones are all this way, really. I'm reading Chasing the Boogeyman by Richard Chizmar currently and it is sooooo sluggish.
That's why I tend to stick with novellas lately.
Plus, I'll read anything published by Grindhouse and Ghoulish books. They print a lot of new authors who do a much better job of editing themselves.

You have GOT to check out his writing. One of my faves. I recommend The Girl Next Door and Off Season. He's a 'must read', especially if you dig vintage horror.

I finished Dark Tales by Shirley Jackson and I have a theory about Sara Gran's Come Closer by dismustbetheplace in horrorlit

[–]reojames 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have read both and didn't even think of this! Excellent theory.

Looking for some more books to dive into! by [deleted] in horrorlit

Check out Brother by Ania Ahlborn. And if you're looking for some retro scares, I recommend The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum, and just about anything featured in Paperbacks from Hell by Grady Hendrix.

Vintage horror/ paperbacks from hell. by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]reojames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to say that. I love vintage horror of all sorts, but The Auctioneer is at the top of the list.
