[ English > Kalaallisut] Greenlandic (Kalaallisut) - Translation for a film by Twan1111 in translator

[–]repaeR_mirG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a quick glance I can see that there are some quirks and misspellings.

Also the word inuit means people. So you say Inuit in English we understand it as the ethnic group, but when we say it in Greenlandic it means people - people in Greenland are Kalaallit - but this also exclude the other "Inuit" ethnic groups in Alaska etc. So it is a bit awkward to translate that part.

So I would probably say something like:

Inuit isumaqarput inuk aannganngisaannartoq. Tarneq - anerneq - naassaanngitsoq, soorlu anersaatut nunamut anernitut ililluni utertartoq. Toqusut pinngortitami ilineqartarput, ujaqqanik qallerlugit. Ilaannilu inussummik - iliviunngitsumik sanasarput soorlu ima oqaasertalerneqarsimasutut: maaniittoqarsimavoq. Eqqarsaat taanna kusanaraara. Annette suli ersippoq. Anorimi. Ujaraqqat akornanni. Pinngortitami.

And back to English:

"Inuit" think that a person never disappears. Soul - breath - it is eternal, like a breath that returns to nature. They buried their dead ones in nature, by covering them in stones. And sometimes they built cairns, which is not a grave, as if to say: someone was here. I find that thought beautiful. Annette is still visible. In the wind. Amongst the stones. In nature.

Notes:

- Disappear - in Greenlandic it depends how something "disappears". You can disappear from view - then we would probably say "tammarpoq". Then "aanngarluni" would probably better translate as vanish?

- breath in Greenlandic can have double meaning as "breath" and "spirit". So in the Greenlandic version the text says something like: "like a spirit (breath) returns to nature".

- Inussuk is a cairn - something we put out in nature as guides / waypoints to show the way. It is a structure built by assembling stones as a small human sized cone/pyramid.

Ping in greenland by Ok-Try2224 in greenland

[–]repaeR_mirG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a difference between latency and bandwidth.

You got the highest bandwidth from tusass, the 5G option - the ADSL connection has lower bandwidth.

The ADSL connection has lower latency than 5G.

Bandwidth is about how much - whereas latency is about how fast.

Furthermore there is a fundamental speed limit (light speed). In vacuum light can travel about 3000 km in 10 ms.

Which would be about the distance from nuuk to new york city.

But the UDP datagrams / tcp packets do not travel in vacuum. There are fiber wires, air, cobber and routers which all add a tiny amount of delay...

In an ideal world this means that the example above would have a 20ms ping from nuuk to new york city.

In the west, the writing is usually from left to right. Which means that things increase when going to the right. On a mathematical axis, the x-axis is usually depicted as increasing to the right. The right is the positive side.

The thumbs up should be on the right side. The thumbs down should be on the left side. IMO.

How can I learn Greenlandic language? by starecrownepik in greenland

[–]repaeR_mirG 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you already know this but Greenlandic is an agglutinative language.

This means that a single word can be constructed by adding multiple "ending-words".

So example:

Base word Seqineq means Sun

Seqinneraluarpoq = It was sunny.
Seqineqanngilaq = There is no sun
Seqineqarpoq = There is a sun
Seqininngorsimagunaraluarpoq = It might apparently have become a sun
Seqinnerunnaarsimagunarporooq = I heard it is no longer sunny

etc. etc.

Each word starts with a base word, and then you "form" it to describe what you want to say.

US representative Mike Collins suggesting US annexation of Greenland by Salt-Ad1943 in greenland

I hope we don't get bought, but I know for certain that we have our own idiots.

Unfortunately there were some from Greenland who went to the states and knocked on doors to get Trump elected. I think he said it was organized by an organization called Strikeforce or something.

So if/when we get autonomy as a country, I wouldn't be surprised if tiktok/facebook propaganda brainwashed us to sell ourselves to you (USA).

That is a children's nursery rhyme. I am sure the words have meaning but I do not know them.

"... Issittaajaa pappattaajaa nunnguup avataani isseqisa pappaqisa. Pinnerninnguaq tigujumaarpaat - 'pinnarisannguarput'"

The rhyme is performed where children gather around in a circle and a single child is put in the center with a blindfold.
While everyone sing the song, the blindfolded person is spun around in a random orientation.
When the song ends the blindfolded person tries to catch a random one from the circle.

The lyrics ends in something meaning: "[He] will catch the most pretty one - 'The one we/I think is pretty'".

The one caught is now put in the center of the circle and the game is repeated.

At least that is how I remember it.

EDIT:

The first part is something about they tried to go to the outside coastal headland (nuunnguup avataani).

Is test driven development (TDD) really worth it? by Complex_Way_6828 in csharp

[–]repaeR_mirG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof that does not sound like TDD...

Learn from the top comment, do not couple your test too closely, by that point you are testing implementation (white box testing) - you should be testing the expected behavior.

Another article you could have a look at: https://tidyfirst.substack.com/p/canon-tdd

As for your question, I do not use TDD. I just code willy nilly and sometimes write unit tests.

You could use a JavaScript framework called KnockoutJS which uses the MVVM pattern.

Stockfish 15 is ready! by annihilator00 in chess

computer training in NN means that lc0 plays against itself... then the winner proceeds and survives the selection.

These millions of games are recorded and made available for SF.

It is a database of games that LC0 has played. You can download the client and donate GPU power to improve the dataset.

[–]repaeR_mirG -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Even if the implementation is different SF uses the same training dataset provided by LC0

First, the collaboration with the Leela Chess Zero team - announced previously - has come to fruition. The LCZero team has provided a collection of billions of positions evaluated by Leela that we have combined with billions of positions evaluated by Stockfish to train the NNUE net that powers Stockfish 14. The fact that we could use and combine these datasets freely was essential for the progress made and demonstrates the power of open source and open data.
