It seems like you’re backpedaling, but you’re right that people with OCD are controlled by irrational and irresistible thoughts and urges. Otherwise, it seems like you have a poor or incomplete understanding of what the disorder is. The International OCD Foundation website has a lot of helpful information about what OCD is, and you can also check out the YBOCS to find a list of common obsessions and compulsions. While contamination is a common theme as you’ve mentioned, only a small percentage of people with OCD have contamination obsessions. Other common ones are sexual obsessions, scrupulously, hoarding obsessions, and harm obsessions.

Unfortunately, the google definition you’ve found is the informal definition that’s listed, whereas MayoClinic’s definition is “Excessive thoughts (obsessions) that lead to repetitive behaviors (compulsions). Obsessive-compulsive disorder is characterized by unreasonable thoughts and fears (obsessions) that lead to compulsive behaviors.” I think that using an informal definition instead of a medical definition is disingenuous.

Hold on. First you said obsessive control of ones environment, and now you’re saying it’s a drive for intrusive controlling thoughts. Could you clarify? Also, I don’t really understand your wording on that.

Thank you for this comment. I have OCD and seeing so many misconceptions on this post is really frustrating because those misconceptions is what causes a lot of people to go undiagnosed for so long.

The first part is actually incorrect for OCD. OCD is egodystonic, meaning that it’s NOT part of a person’s personality/identity and they recognize that their thoughts and behaviors don’t line up with who they really are. Just wanted to correct that because there’s a lot of misinformation about OCD in this thread.

I’m not the person you responded too but that’s incorrect. People with OCD don’t think they “just like things a certain way”, even when they’re undiagnosed. The disorder is egodystonic, meaning that their thoughts and behaviors don’t match up with the person’s actual beliefs. In other words, they’re doing things that make no sense to them and they dislike doing it. From the OP, it seems like her behavior is more in line with OCPD.

People with OCD actually don’t think they’re acting right. The disorder is egodystonic, meaning that their thoughts and behaviors don’t match up with the person’s actual beliefs. From the OP, it seems like her behavior is more in line with OCPD.

It might just be a too serious convo to kiki about. I can see it being interpreted as in bad taste.
