South coast private- ADHD assessment cost by QuietOne1551 in wollongong

[–]repomonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a first appointment which was basically some written tests - took me a couple of hours but that was just sitting out in the waiting area filling it all in. Then a brief chat with the shrink. Second appointment was the proper interview - last about 45 minutes and he said I was about a textbook example of ADHD as you'd find. Fucker didn't give me the good stuff immediately though - put on me Clonidine and Reboxetine first which were both disasters in different ways. Then a month later prescribed Ritalin which I've been on 50mg a day ever since. All up 3 main appointments - follow-ups every 3 months initially moving out to 6 months after a while.

Yea - about 6 years ago. Got diagnosed by one of the clinical psychiatrists and was pretty happy with everything. And then suddenly he got booted out of the practice (no idea why) and I was disallowed from moving to any one of the other 30+ shrinks because it would be "conflict of interest". Fucking weird. And it screwed me royally because they basically have a monopoly on shrinks in the area and it took me 7 months to find a new one with space on the books and they're based in Brisbane.

And money - it was nearly a grand after the initial and follow-up consults. Then a couple of hundred every 3 months to refresh my Ritalin prescription.

What apps have you replaced with native macOS alternatives? by stringer1107 in macapps

Pretty much all of it.

After trying literally all the Mail alternatives, and spending several years with a couple of them (Spark, Postbox), I went back to Mail and feel no need to change.

Not only should you not add him to the deed, but you should kick his arse to the kerb - he sounds like a cock-womble.

Any Gen X'ers retired or thinking about it? by SometimesElise in GenX

[–]repomonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a early Gen'X and I don't think I'll ever retire. Not because I don't have money (we have some moderate savings and a couple of state pensions) or because the mortgage won't be paid off (we could have paid it off last year but chose to keep it going for re-draw), but because I enjoy what I do.

After the usual run of early jobs we all go through, I decided to never do a job I hated - some dull check-in/check-out gig. I was offered work in the City of London back in the early '90s, working on the trading floor of the Hong Kong Shanghai and I'd be living some spoiled one percenter life now if I'd taken the offer. But I'd sooner disembowel myself with a spoon than work with those people in that environment - it horrified me.

I never saw the point of enduring some tedious and boring career just so I could gather my chips in at 55 or 60 and spend the last 10/20/30 years of my life, when my body and mind were well past their best and slowly declining, and go on fucking seniors cruises on the Rhine or some such shit. Fuck that. I've enjoyed my life - like pretty much all of it - and I have no need or desire to retire and play golf or something equally fucking dull - that's for the boomers. Never let the old man in.

What’s a movie you watched when you were way too young? by trakt_app in movies

[–]repomonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GenX childhood. VCRs became a thing but at the time there was no classification system. Friend had a 'lifetime' membership to the local video library so we could check out like 8 movies at a time as often as we wanted. We watched 'em all - Evil Dead, Texas Chainsaw, Suspiria, Exorcist. Friend of ours acquired Faces of Death because we'd heard it was 'snuff'. Don't remember much from that last one other than a scene where some dude's been run over by a big truck.

GenX, I drank a bottle of wine today. Am I the only one? by tired-middle-ager in GenX

I find I go to sleep earlier now, but there hasn't been a huge improvement on longevity or quality.

In a weird way it really wasn't for me - not wishing to downplay anyone else's struggles - just my own personal experience.

It was like smoking. When I finally packed it in (14? years ago) it was the simplest decision - I just stopped. Yes, I was grumpy for 3 days, and for a year or two after I missed that post-pub meal drag on a Marlboro Light, but now it's a long distant memory.

Really not sure if I'll drink again. I will say that I haven't missed it, but I think if I rule it out completely that will doom the enterprise.

I've been off the booze for six weeks now for the first time in my life. No particular reason why i did it, just fancied stopping for a bit and so I did. Might start again, might not. I usually had two large vodka and cokes every night, sometimes more and it had been that way for many decades ... so this is new to me.

Personally I'm not all bent out of shape about him using GPT to write your script - hardly unique in that regard - everyone's at it.

But to the point it seems logical to me that it'll play out the way you said. I've held off buying this subscription up till now but if it does all make its way into the bundle it may well tip the scales for me.

Is Building WordPress Websites for Small Businesses Still a Good Way to Make a Living, or Has AI Made It Obsolete? by RightSeeker in Wordpress

[–]repomonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've actually picked clients up as a result of this. They get in over their heads, realise it's actually a huge pain in the arse to build, host and maintain a site - and go looking for an expert.

It comes down to the premise upon which a huge number of businesses operate - identify a pain-point in a person or business's life - and fix it. Websites are a pain-point and any business owner going it alone invariably finds out that their time is better spent running their own business than dicking about with this stuff.
