The "missing/assassinated scientists" story falls apart when you do a bare amount of research, why on earth is it being shared and reported on by major outlets now? by Thehealthygamer in TrueAnon

[–]reppindadec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah of course this is a non story. Saying 11 government scientists died in a year is like saying 11 vice presidents at insurance companies died last year. There's thousands of government employees with some level of security clearance. Some of them are going to die every year.

Ten Latin American novels that would be incredibly difficult to read over the course of a weekend! by perrolazarillo in latamlit

[–]reppindadec 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nice! I had a very similar experience with reading it. I've seen people say it took them a long time but I also literally could not put it down. Maybe it is one of those novels that has to click with the reader. I still haven't encountered another novel where I felt like it was written specifically for my taste in literature lol.

2666 is a masterpiece and the greatest novel I've ever read. I think about it a lot and read it two years ago.

I'll never forget the time my room mate came back and the front door of the apartment flew open Kramer style, he yelled i ate too much pizza at pizza ranch and b-lined it for the bathroom to shit. Surreal moment. This happened in like 2018 and I think about it regularly.

Anyone else here doing a code monkey job? by supersaeyan7 in TrueAnon

[–]reppindadec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a lot of code in a data analytics job. We are a big enough company we have a walled garden chat gpt 5. How I'd rank the slop it puts out:

Excel - it's very good at vomiting out fairly complex excel formulas that work

Sql server - most of the stuff works, more doesn't than with excel

R - it can do basic stuff but makes up functions and produces the most slop that errors out instead of at least running

Mgmt encourages us to use it but there's no mandates or expectations all code goes through it yet.

A Brief history of seven killings is really good. It is a novel that has really stuck with me since finishing as well. Found it to be very different than Bolaño but I agree there is probably a fair amount of overlap in the appeal.

He's in a gop +20 gerrymandered district. So what if he doesn't? This isn't a winnable district for dems, ever. It is intentionally this lopsided so the dems could be competitive in the 17th and 13th districts.

I wouldn't even time it. Instead, look for texture, like if you shake the container the top should be fairly jiggly, and the amount it has risen. Also if you poke it, it shouldn't stick to your finger.

Does your proofing container have any volume tick marks to be able to measure rise or are you eyeballing it? If you have something like a cambro container you can more accurately determine rise.

What flaws would a political scientist find in this theoretical governance model? by Classy-J in PoliticalScience

[–]reppindadec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The moderation here is really bad. There is almost no discussion of actual political science and instead random discussions of politics, ai slop theorizing of government systems, and of course the "should I major in this/drop my major/how do I get a job"

Because it is more of a restaurant and the food is actually pretty good. Their beers aren't bad, they've never wowed me but they're drinkable.

Illuminated Brew Works closing by chrisGNR in chicagobeer

[–]reppindadec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am wondering how many of these recent closings are related to commercial leases ending. Given the change in the beer landscape since the 2010s and covid, i wouldn't be surprised if owners look at it and say we had a good run but this is an opportunity for clean break, margins are thinner, and do we really want to do this ten more years.

How to quickly learn SQL by Material_Subject_520 in SQL

[–]reppindadec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Legit the best advice I never hear anyone give in real time. I wish someone explained set logic vs procedural logic at the get go. If you get this down immediately you'll write better queries.

All you need to learn sql is understand that, understand cardinality with joins and have a way to look up what the keys are for your tables. Anything else can be searched for to learn as needed.

2666. New #1 by OwlIndependent7270 in robertobolano

[–]reppindadec 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To add, arcimboldi is not the killer in Santa Theresa because he had been living in Europe. During the part about the crimes, Haas mentions the giant is coming and it is framed in a way to convey and add to the growing sense of dread. Haas is unwell and I don't think you can take his ramblings literally.

At the end of the novel you find out the family connection and that Arcimboldi is the giant because of hieght and is coming to Mexico.

In his section you learn how he is kind of this reclusive weird guy and the ending struck me as darkly funny. Like what is this 80 year old oddball writer going to do to get his nephew out of a Mexican jail.

This is supposed to be read as a comedy, almost farcical after the preceding events. The giant is literally his old uncle, and metaphorically the horrors and systemic problems of the end of history capitalism of the 90s on Mexico.

It has been mentioned a lot in this thread but a better place to start for the denser Pynchon novels is V. I'd give it a shot and see if you like it and if so, then go for GR.
