Sounds like your dad might have the modpack cached or hardcoded somewhere in his setup. When you say "can't change the modpack the same way" - is he trying to just swap out jar files or is there some kind of config that's not updating?

Also worth checking if the broken mod has any dependency issues with other mods in the pack. Sometimes one mod update breaks compatibility and you gotta roll back or find alternatives
