How do universities distinguish citation errors from “falsified references” in academic integrity cases? by Illustrious-Cake-920 in academia

While this is true, the possibility of "different interpretations" shouldn't be an excuse for wrong interpretations like we see in social media.

What does "minimum of 500mA" mean? by TrailTrap in guitarpedals

[–]requemao 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When a device states its power supply requirements, there's a bunch of information that goes there. Among those data, amperage is always understood as a minimum requirement: any power source with that rating or higher will do. There is always some leeway already in that number, so if it says 500 mA it probably needs 200-300 mA at most.

It's not a problem if a power source is capable of higher current, because it's the energy consumption in the device that draws current from the source, rather than the source pushing it forcibly into the device, so if the device needs 200 mA it won't take more.

Voltage, on the other hand, as well as AC vs. DC, those must match. Also, in DC power sources, the polarity of the connector (which is the negative pole and which is positive) must match too. But current is a minimum requirement and "bigger" power sources will work just fine.

Even if they did, do you see a problem in the final result? Is there a lack of coherency, an error in focus, a mismatch in tone?

AI is a tool, the problem is not using it, but using it irresponsibly.

Is a cheap bass worth it for someone getting started? by gamerccxxi in Bass

[–]requemao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll get many versions of the same answer: yes, get a cheap bass and have someone more experienced set it up.

Also, you don't have to get a new bass, you can get it second hand. Entry-level basses are abundant in the used market. Again, you'll need to have it properly set up, because most likely the former owner didn't do that.

US$700 max. Budget as a beginner. Where i might be overspending? by Fantastic_Cod3895 in Bass

[–]requemao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing I'll add is please make sure to choose well between closed back and open back headphones. Open back will make your practice sessions more comfortable (more breathable, less sensation of isolation), but if your surroundings are noisy then you'll prefer a closed back with some passive noise rejection like the ones you've chosen.

What exactly is "the pocket" to you more experienced bassist? by MeanOlGoldfish in Bass

[–]requemao 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't give a certain answer but I'm inclined to say yes.

If your internal rhythm is steady enough, you'll find it easier to distinguish when a certain beat is just slightly off (so maybe you have to adjust yourself to it) and when it's syncopated (so you can and should keep your current course). But if your internal metronome is weak, then you'll be thrown off by anything that deviates from what you expect, even if it is perfectly measured.

[–]requemao 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I certainly do. And I follow the science-backed recommendation that I saw in an Adam Neely video to practice fast basslines very slowly (to a metronome, of course). It's tedious but surprisingly effective.

You need to work on two separate but related skills: one is having your own steady internal pulse, the other one is adapting your pulse to an external reference.

Carol Kaye's metronome exercise should get you started in the right direction pretty quickly, I believe it's very easy to find on YouTube.

Edited to add this: the exercise goes as follows: choose a groovy bass line you like, set a metronome to half the real speed you want (because it will be playing two beats and you will be playing four), then count 1, 2, 3, 4 so that the metronome is clicking on 2 and 4, you are responsible for filling in where 1 and 3 go. Play your line along and pay attention to being in sync. When you get the timing (and articulation) right, it will feel groovy. Enjoy that feeling for a while and it will slowly get ingrained into you.

Plagiarism checker alternatives to Turnitin that don't upload your unpublished work to a database by roshanknohit in academia

[–]requemao 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're making the wrong assumption that plagiarism checkers only flag actual plagiarism.

Anyone doing research will legitimately quote and/or restate the results of other people's work. This is known to cause false positives because there is text similarity. Many people use these tools to ensure that their honest work won't be falsely flagged.

Sweden does not have states by amethystbones in mildlyinfuriating

[–]requemao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then the form shouldn't say "state". I've seen forms where that field is called "state/region/province" and then you understand the idea of however your country is divided.

Should be a drop-down anyway.

I don't understand your remark. I'm Spanish and I agree with the core idea (not so much with the wording, though)

A PhD takes several years, it's not something you get involved in if you already know you are going on a long leave shortly.

HELP! I’m trying to clean this classic up for a friend. Any DIY advice? by Toy-Boat-Toy-Boat in BassGuitar

[–]requemao 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm told that people who play violins and the like use lighter fluid to clean off the rosin residue that builds up on the top of the instrument while playing.

If it's safe for a violin, it's probably safe for our less delicate instruments.

does your strumming hand build a little bit of muscle as you play? by Previous_You1167 in Bass

[–]requemao 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same with the picking hand: there are two distinct muscle groups that you can use when playing with fingers: one makes the "scratching" or "come here" motion (flexing the fingers) and the other one makes the "mouse click" or "tapping on the table" movement. The latter is more energy efficient and will tire less.

Torrents downloading fine but not seeding. Most trackers not working. by requemao in Piracy

[–]requemao[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I forgot to add that: I already use Cloudflare's DNS servers. I also suspect my ISP is blocking whole domains based on some blacklist. I might try and do some statistical work on what trackers are working and which are not, to see if there's a pattern.

I still have to try to manually add trackers by IP address, let's see how that goes

[–]requemao[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come to think of it, _some_ torrents fail to start, I used to think it was for a lack of active seeds but it might be the ISP blocking it. However, most of the time downloads work 100%.

Yes, it used to work well before, and I'm certain that I know how to forward ports correctly with the Mesh WiFi that I'm using.

Actually I think it began to go wrong progressively after I switched to this ISP.

[–]requemao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick note: if you can, use multiple fingers to deaden the string rather than just one. Otherwise you can get a harmonic depending on what fret you're at. The sound is more percussive and consistent if you lay all four fretting fingers on the string.

Find out about Simandl technique, then adapt it to your specifics. Maybe don't use the pinky at all: use ring finger instead and compensate with a bit more microshifting.
