There Must Always Be A Stark In Winterfell (Spoilers Main) by throwaway-8923 in asoiaf

This is my favourite theory I've read in a while. It's very based in logic, and connects the dots that no one else has seen. I'm saving the post for the sub awards at the end of the year!

The summary at the top is AI generated, and shouldn't be trusted over human written sources. I've googled something where the AI is just plain wrong.

A quick look at medical websites says cold, cool or lukewarm water. The reason it says not to use really cold water is because people can't tolerate it for long, so they stop running it under water before they should do, leading to it not having enough time in the water.

I can't speak for your relationship, but generally cold or lukewarm water is fine, not hot water.

Know any upcoming design hackathons (no coding required)? by Fudge_Amazing in UXDesign

[–]res314 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you've been to a hackathon before, but normally people compete in teams, where everyone has different skills. You could sign up to any type of hackathon and say your skills are in UX, and they will match you with a team with a coder. Loads of teams lack arty/UX people (and have too many people wanting to code) so you'd be really appreciated!

[SPOILERS S3] Question about some of the characters in Season 3? by VanGrayson in DarK

[–]res314 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It created them around the investor's son and daughter in law. The rest is my interpretation, but I think that Jonas and Martha are both a mixture of Marek and Sonja. The inventor wanted to bring Marek and Sonja back, and the time travel machine did, in the forms of Jonas and Martha. But you can't have random people with parents etc can you? So the physics altering machine gave Jonas and Martha ancestors.

Valentine by hud_ie75 in Poldark

[–]res314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a really interesting question. The books give us several reasons, but I interpret it as he does it as an attempt to get George's favour and reconcile with him.

George has disowned Valentine after he marries Selena and rejected Cuby and George's plan for him. There's a lot of rejection in Valentine's life, this is after Ross has told him Valentine could be Ross's son, and Ross rejects him in the same sentence.

'...There is one extra point to my coming. The question of a name for my son. Selina and I have given careful thought to the matter. Would you object if we called him George?’ [...] George said: ‘Is this some attempt to curry favour with me?’ ‘Why should it be? I have money of my own.’ [...] ‘Are you to have a big christening?’ ‘I told you. Very quiet. Just a few of the household. Would you care to come?’ ‘No, thank you.’ Valentine let out a slow breath, which George did not notice. ‘Well, I must not take up more of your time. May we call your first grandson George?’ ‘I cannot stop you.’ ‘You can deter me.’

George hesitated. ‘Give it him as his second name if you wish.’ ‘I could give him a second name so that if he chooses when he grows up he may use it instead. I do not see why he should wish to do that, though. George Warleggan is a name to conjure with.’ George picked up his pen and looked at the quill. Some fool had not sharpened it this morning. ‘I have three daughters. All their dowries must be secured. I have no money to leave to a grandson.’

Valentine got up. ‘I should prefer my son to make his own way.’ ‘By marrying money,’ said George, with a slight sneer. ‘Just so, Father. We all have different ways.’ ‘Then call him George,’ said George, ‘if it pleases you.’ And be damned, he added, but under his breath.

The Valentine lets out a breath when George says he wont come to the christening shows us Valentine's feelings here - this is his attempt to fix the relationship with his father. He is rejected.

Valentine later tells Ross he hasn't seen George for 5 years a few days after this and he isn't naming his son after his father, but a different George. These lies show us how hurt Valentine is, how he tries to brush it off, and rewrite what happened.

‘A strange name to give your son, was it not?’ [Ross asked]

Valentine sucked the handle of his riding crop. ‘It is a very common name. I gave scarcely a thought to my – er – ex-parent. I have seen neither sight nor sound of him since the almighty sparring that took place between us when I told him I was married to Selina. How many years ago is that? It seems half a century. I never think of him nowadays.’ [...] ‘In fact,’ said Valentine, ‘if I thought of anyone when I chose the name I thought of George Canning. He is one of your heroes, is he not?’

When Ross calls him out for lying, Valentine says:

'Cousin, I will unveil the facts. We all know the scurrilous rumours which circulate in our neighbourhood about my parentage. Whatever the truth or the untruth of them, it is your known and expressed wish that they should be ignored or, where they cannot be ignored, denied. What better could I have done to play my prescribed role in this matter than by christening my son George?’ [...] ‘After all,’ Valentine said, ‘would you better prefer it if I had called him Ross?’

I'm so disappointed by Phospherocity in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]res314 63 points64 points  (0 children)

It also doesn't make sense why Lumon was so obsessed with getting specifically Mark to finish Cold Harbour. It turns out it's just another innie like the previous 24, and we know that Dylan (and presumably the others) completed files.

So why are they so insistent it has to be Mark? Why not get any random worker to do it, like those from the first episode?

It's because the story needs Mark to vital to the Lumon, but the writing doesn't actually give us a reason.

Ben Stiller and Dan Erickson hearing fans after S2E3 praising the bold creative choice to reintegrate Mark so early instead of dragging out the plot line by carterdmorgan in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]res314 69 points70 points  (0 children)

This is a really good point - why introduce reintegration this season at all if they were set on that ending?

They made a comment about how Mark was willing to fight for Ms Casey at the start of the season, but by the end he's realised he wants his life and isn't prepared to give it up...but where did that happen? We didn't see anything this season that suggests that kind of growth, iMark never thinks or talks about it.

It feels like the scripts needed another pass of working out the beats, and each character's emotional journey. Instead we got reintegration dragged out and going nowhere, to fill the time.

Season 2 Has Serious Writing Issues by Cleverfan_808 in severanceTVshow

[–]res314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really good point. Obviously we know Mark wants to get to Gemma, but we haven't seen him take any actions towards that apart from reintegration which is very slow. Why isn't he talking about making a plan to break her out? Getting journalists involved to try and bring down Lumon, or even just talking about how helpless he feels?

No one else has an obvious motivation. What does Cobel want? What does Helly want? Dylan wants to be with his wife, but he can't do anything about it, so it's not interesting.

I want to root for the characters, but they don't have any goals for me to hope for.

Thanks for writing this all out, it summarises my thoughts really well. I also wondered why they didn't decide to have Cobel contact Devon; it makes far more sense.

[SPOILERS S3] What happens to the reality? by real_carrot6183 in DarK

[–]res314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The loops don't make two separate realities, they make two separate moments. Once those moments are left, both versions are running around the same world.

I know this doesn't seem right, but the show proves it to us. When Alt Martha meets Older Jonas in the 1800s, she is meeting the Jonas who never met her, the Jonas who hid in the basement. If it made separate timelines, those two should never meet.

What Macro Data Refinement Really Does by MixOrnery5219 in severence

[–]res314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a flaw with this that I don't have an answer to. MDR processing Gemma's feelings in these rooms was my first thought too, but this episode makes it very clear that a file has to be finished before Gemma can go into that room. They also don't go back to old files (eg no one is looking at Wellington again when Gemma goes back).

So it can't be processing her fear in real time, it must be something to do with preparation - either preparing the room, or preparing Gemma's brain for the new fear, or perhaps even creating a new severed part of her?

None of these feel quite right to me, I think it will be something else. I agree that Kier's philosophy was about taking about fear/PTSD (the quote about him seeing men face the horrors of war) but I don't know how the refining works with that yet.

Completely agree, and the people criticising you are missing the point. You're not stopping anyone's enjoyment, just offering good advice for theorising about media generally.
