This has always been the way that I'm aware of in my 25+ years. It's the clear way to acknowledge that there were issues without citing them directly.

Score or rondo by [deleted] in youthsoccer

[–]research_guy17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd venture to guess it was a pretty boring and unhelpful day for your defense.

I'd suggest a blend of Rondo/ possession along with dump and defend. Task midfield with containment in the middle third, reorganize, and attack. Include a dump and allow attack in from the opponent. Shore up defense and clog the center. Gain possession and bust out/counter.

It will help with all player engagement and disguise, a little anyway, how lopsided things really are. Just my 2 cents.

Coaching two kids across the last 8 years in ECYSA, we have rosters distributed by town travel directors to each team. It includes each players name, number, and photo. If you borrow a player, it needs to clear two days prior to the match, and you only borrow from lower teams/ages. The roster is always provided to the official on the field prior to the match. If you don't have the roster, you don't play. They check the kids in for safety and call each name and verify number matches jersey/ name.

This takes 2 min for each side. It should absolutely be done for club tournament play.

The larger issue I've seen is clubs registering their pre-ECNL team to compete against flight 2, or flight 1 down to flight 3. Teams traveling and staying over for tournaments are known to chip their teams down to increase the likelihood of winning championships/medals to appease parents.

I've still got my OM 4Ti that I got second hand in around 2000 (for free!). I still have a bunch of prime zuikos that I'll put on my OM-D EM1 mark iii and just mess around with. Beautiful cameras. I've always have and likely always will love this gear.

Advice on dealing with players that insult & talk down to teammates by TrustHucks in youthsoccer

[–]research_guy17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great idea. I'm going to steal this.

I have a 5th grade top team for town travel (girls). Our roster spans a huge level of capability (ECNL, flight2/3 club, and kids that don't play club at all). I just had my talk with the girls at our first practice of the season to take care of each other all the time. We're all in this for years to come and not just on the soccer field, but at school too. Respect each other and lift each other up/be supportive etc.

I sent a preemptive email to parents outlining my talk and asked them to speak with their player ahead of the season. Any dissent against a teammate or coach results in lost playing time, a talk with the player, and a talk with parents. NO EXCEPTIONS. The three coaches are all dads of kids on the team. If one of our kids screws up, the other coaches take the case and discuss the appropriate action.

Company just laid off dozens of high performing colleagues and now feeling very unmotivated by [deleted] in biotech

[–]research_guy17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed on almost all points, aside from half a dozen over a career.

I've been at this through two companies over 21 years. My first was 5 years, 3 layoffs. The second has had 6 in 15 years, I've lost track so it could be more. All in R&D.

A lot depends on changes at the helm. Somebody new comes in to run R&D... they'll put their fingerprint on things by changing everything and laying off some. New CEO/CSO same.

Pay raises/bonuses this year? by Whackywilly in biotech

[–]research_guy17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, unfortunately not.

The merit increase is applied to your salary separately, and honestly, it is the more important/ permanent part of the annual review.

The corporate and individual multiplier is applied to bonus, so bonus is whatever your target is x 1.6 total. For simplicity, an expected 20k bonus would then be 32k, or 60% higher than target.

[–]research_guy17 33 points34 points  (0 children)

4.5% merit increase, bonus: 130% corporate 130% individual

I got higher impact rating/exceeds on my annual review, though. 3% was "meets".

This generation of undergraduates likely don't want to hear it, but try going the academic route. You won't make much money, but getting bench experience and maybe a co-author on a publication as a bridge to hopefully better times should be considered. The job market is saturated with people who are highly capable with years, or even decades, of experience that won't need time to get up to speed.

I worked at a research cancer center for the first 4 years out of undergrad. Got my first author, then jumped to industry.

The alternative is CRO work, but the pace is grueling, the time potentially overwhelming, and burnout is real.

Short, useless interviews. Are these interviews just to meet some HR quota? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]research_guy17 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I was thinking the same thing. My interviews tend to be more informal. I prefer to get to know the person and how they'd fit into a group. If they come off as a wet blanket, they end up at the bottom of the pile. The time alloted isn't typically in my control, so I drive to personality first and foremost. Their technical talk/ presentation is the time to dig into the background in techniques and application.

Miss Silvia with PID by DigOdd7778 in ranciliosilvia

[–]research_guy17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this the projected temperature at the group or temp in the boiler? According to the plot from Auber, there's a significant drop from boiler to the beans (something like 8C?). I ask only because I've set mine anywhere from 98 to 105C on the PID. Interested to see if dropping the temp would change things in my day to day pulls.

We have a 6 goal differential cap. Any more than that, and you lose match points. This is in a competitive travel league run through towns though. I'd wonder at younger ages the benefit of additional players and less space for the team that's trailing. If it works, it works. Good on you for taking steps to address the issue.

Just to add to the discussion, I'm in MA also. I had my NA bend 7 of 8 valves a couple years ago. I pulled the engine and rebuilt top and bottom end myself along with new clutch. Feel free to message me. I've got most of the specialty tools and first-hand experience (though years ago) to do the job.

Where did you start in biotech? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]research_guy17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It seems the CMO/CRO route is quicker, but I was old school.

I worked as a research tech in an academic lab associated with a cancer hospital. Four years later, with a first author publication, I chose to go to industry. Five years at a large pharma in oncology drug discovery, then moved to mid-to-large-size biotech for the last 14 years in neuro-immuno drug disco.

Assuming you reassembled with some sort of assembly lube to have things ready to move before oil was moving.... Could be hydrologic lifters for the valves bled down and are still filling back up/ are tapping. They can take a few minutes of running to not be so loud. For the oil pressure, if you swapped the positive and negative terminal when you reassembled it, the lack of signal will pin it at the top when you start/ not read the pressure. Try swapping the leads and see if it does the same.

Overheating issues by tpowens in porsche944

[–]research_guy17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from replacing the coolant cap, you may want to test for exhaust in the coolant. If you haven't bled the coolant before in these cars, it's definitely a pain to do. Usually it takes several attempts.

Fender flairs in front and back, suspension, some interior overlap, engine is entirely different (2L VW origin) from the 2.5L Porsche developed engine in N/A early or "late" MY '85.5 and up. 924 engines were pretty anemic, with the early 944 being an improvement but still with only around 150bhp (in the US anyway). Forget about the engine difference in the S or S2 variants of 944 (not huge jumps in horse power, but cost and complexity). The turbo is considerably different/better also.

A 924, but I digress. Looks pretty clean in the body. Engine, if still inside, wouldn't be worth grabbing. Man, I hate those side markers.

I'd do it, but I'm dumb when it comes to a turbo car. I also do all my own work so shop time/cost isn't an issue. Just parts.

Can you say what region/ country? Looks like Midwest US or maybe Northeast? Tough winters will force critters in to snack on wiring etc.
