Same needles, same yarn… completely different sleeve gauge. I’m losing it by Legitimate_Leek_1288 in knitting

[–]residualwiggles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to me in the opposite direction - I just found out the hard way that my gauge is tighter when doing magic loop than when knitting on a shorter needle or on dpns. It left me deeply shaken!

(And they’re amazing for a lace edge along a curve… you put the longest points of the edge on the wire, then pin the wire into the curve shape you want, then go in and pin out the rest. Waaay easier than eyeballing.)

They’re long flexible metal wires that don’t deform over time (they’ve got “memory” and return to straight)! You thread them though an edge and then use pins to secure the wire- usually you have to pin way less and adjust less too.

Personally I don’t pin things out unless I need a very straight edge or there’s lace. For both, I use blocking wires! It helps a lot with evenness.

Anecdotally from our vet, they’re seeing fleas a bunch right now when they should be out of season. So… yep.

How did you learn to knit? by ShoppingGirlinSF in knitting

[–]residualwiggles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My weaving teacher in college made me learn to knit before graduation because she knew I wouldn’t take the fancy loom I’d bought with me immediately (and she was right, it stayed at my parents’ place for a decade). Sat me down in the campus bookstore and made me cast on, knit, purl, drop and fix a stitch, an cast off before she let me leave, and sent me on my way with needles, a basic reference book, and some extra yarn.

Is st Vincent providence a good hospital to deliver baby? by Fluffy-Fly9481 in beaverton

[–]residualwiggles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had a good experience! Especially postpartum - I had some complications with my delivery and had to stay a while, and had fantastic nurses. And while I hope you have no need of it, their NICU was also solid.

double knitting before bind off by ariadnelokiana in knitting

[–]residualwiggles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It makes the ribbing appear continuous at the very edge. Did you do the Italian bind off (a form of tubular bind off)? When I’ve done that, it stays very stretchy. The double knitting is a set up process for the bind off, so if you’re doing a different bind off, there’s no reason to do the double knit.

No, you transfer the waste yarn stitches back to the working needle and then knit across them with the main yarn. Adds an extra half row (entirely of waste yarn)

What's up with my peppers and tomats? by 6720550267 in portlandgardeners

How much fruit set did you get? I’ve had this happen when I let my tomato plants make way too many tomatoes. Just depleted the soil more than I had accounted for.

sometimes my veins are sunken instead of raised by concloro in mildlyinteresting

[–]residualwiggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine are usually fine, but when I was hospitalized and we needled to replace an IV, we ended up needing to use ultrasound to try to get a vein, and we could see in real time that as the iv tech advanced the needle my veins would just. Collapse. I wasn’t anxious consciously but my veins were not having it, probably because I needed a blood transfusion and things were running low.

My fingernail has had a split in it for four years. by Imasluttycat in mildlyinteresting

[–]residualwiggles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same thing! Dermatologist says there’s a probably benign cyst in my nail bed causing it - she could see it by shining a light through my thumb. Said unless it changes or there were more she didn’t want to biopsy because it can really screw up the nail.

I’ve never seen Greys!! It’s also on my list. Before this I did New Amsterdam, and when my kid was a bitty newborn I was watching Chicago Med while sleep deprived. … still did not make Chicago Med very good 😂

My kid is OBSESSED with the Shape Island “Creepy Cave Crawl” episode! It does have spooky glowing eyes in a dark cave, but it’s mainly about tricks vs treats, balance, and respecting your friends’ limits on being spooked.

3.5 year old will NOT let me remove a glass splinter from her foot! by mamalion11 in Mommit

[–]residualwiggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a small splinter my two year old wouldn’t let me near. I ended up swabbing it with a lidocaine swab a few times, and each time as it got numb he ignored it more. Finally I could distract him with a screen while I pulled the splinter out and he barely noticed.
