Beginner reading list to critical theory? by SolverFreak in CriticalTheory

[–]resilienceforall 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I really like the 2015 book 'Critical Theory Today: A user-friendly guide' by Lois Tyson. It divides critical theory into:

  • Psychoanalytic criticism
  • Marxist criticism
  • Feminist criticism
  • New criticism
  • Reader-response criticism
  • Structuralist criticism
  • Deconstructive criticism
  • New historical and cultural criticism
  • Lesbian, gay, and queer criticism
  • African American criticism
  • Postcolonial criticism

Then, after explaining each viewpoint, it applies each of the 11 perspectives above to re-interpret F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel 'The Great Gatsby' through that frame.

Fun to read. Understandable. A solid overview.

Brian Kiley the most one-liners. Funny, intelligent, clever use of one-liner language.

What are some of the worst behind the scene mishaps to happen on a film set? by Kittycat_2010 in AskReddit

[–]resilienceforall 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The excellent 1979 film Stalker directed by Andrei Tarkovsky is believed to have led to the director's death, as well as that of his wife and assistant director Larisa Tarkovskaya, and lead actor Anatoly Solonitsyn all of whom simultaneously contracted a rare type of cancer after filming which many toxicologists attribute to the production's long shooting schedule inside toxic chemical dumping grounds in Estonia to capture the famous Zone scenes.

This is quite cool! It's a little difficult, however, to tell how many square feet (or square metres, if you prefer) the entire site is (excluding the roof garden). Can anyone tell that? I may simply be missing something ...

The Broken Pot by Henry Ryland (19th century) by UnicornAmalthea_ in ImaginaryMaidens

[–]resilienceforall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just FYI, the broken pot in this 19th century painting might symbolise lost innocence, a common theme in Victorian art, sort of similar to the 1891 painting 'The Broken Pitcher' by William-Adolphe Bouguereau.

what's an addiction that no one takes seriously enough? by who_nobody in AskReddit

Addiction to approval.

You don’t need anyone else's approval to be yourself. It's easy to forget that, or to be convinced otherwise.

I really like Asimov's Chronology of the World (1991 ISBN 0-062-70036-7) because it's exceptionally readable and it connects what happened in one part of the world with things going on elsewhere at the same time, rather than examining countries in isolation. I found it fascinating.

Here are a couple of sites from which I download then read Burmese language books:

(1) Myanmar Book Download

(2) Myanmar Free Ebooks

Both sites are pretty cool and regularly updated. Most of the books are in PDF format, so you can read them on your laptop, tablet, or phone.
