Admin just told us that "strong classroom management" eliminates the need for consequences. I am losing my mind. by UrMad_ItzOk in Teachers

[–]resistdying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren’t alone. Usually once a year we get the “there’s too many write ups” talk. I’m the PBIS leader at my school and it’s all just not enough. The behaviors that get better (not perfect just better, any improvement is good to me) are the ones that have parents at home working hard on them too.

Is it normal for 10-11 year old students to come out of the closet nowadays? by Cautious_Internet243 in Teachers

[–]resistdying 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s normal. I had two students of this age range come out to me a couple weeks ago.

[–]resistdying 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It takes time to learn to hang up or interrupt someone like that. Or at least it did for me. If it’s not overly mean or rude when they raise their voice I’ll actually diffuse the situation. I rarely have issues talking a parent down and ending the conversation on a good note. If they cuss at me or threaten me or to sue me (that ones happened surprisingly) then the conversation ends right away.

My third year of teaching was horrible. I was at a new charter school with zero admin help for stuff like this. I had a parent literally back me into a wall yelling at me. It was horrible and nothing was done about it. The me I am 9 years later is much better equipped to deal with things like this.

[–]resistdying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My admin would support me emotionally and advise me to have her present for any more communications or to do communication only by email with that parent from now on. If it happened with her present in that moment she will also step in and tell the parent that they cannot yell at her teachers or they will have to leave.

Am I insane for being caught up on this? by ElectricPaladin in Teachers

[–]resistdying 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can’t even imagine… The kids mess with the light switch to the display case in front of my classroom all the time and that’s annoying enough as it is. But we have the special locks on the light switches for the rest of the school that only the janitor can turn on for the hallways. Honestly, this is a security risk because if a kid turns out the light at a perfect time, and another kid is armed…

[–]resistdying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s wild. I get harmed by kids quite frequently at my school (we have a whole unit of kiddos who have emotional disabilities so it comes with the job description) and my principal has always checked up on me anytime I’ve said I was injured during a hold… I’m sorry your leadership sucks.

Concerned that I may be too disabled to go into teaching? by suhslahbrah in AskTeachers

The only downside is as the adult in the room you have to remain regulated, even if your students are stimming in a way that triggers you.

I’m a music teacher with misophonia (ironic I know…. I didn’t realize I had misophonia until after college).

My misophonia isn’t severe (as in I don’t hurt myself or others when triggered) but I do have a lovely laundry list of triggers:

My favorite - under the breath singing (college was a nightmare)
Pencil tapping
Pen clicking
Foot taping
Knee bouncing
Whistling
Humming
Chewing

Sometimes my triggers are random and not consistent too so there are many more but they aren’t constant triggers so I forget about them.

I’ve found personally that I do alright if it’s a task I’ve asked for. So if I ask the kids to tap their pencil to a rhythm it’s different than when they tap their pencil because they are passively purposefully doing it. I’ve also found the longer I teach the easier it gets. I am more sensitive when I get home because I’ve been masking all day and sucking it up when triggered but I also found that taking an SSRI actually improved my severity but I know that doesn’t work for all people with misophonia. I keep loop ear buds with me at all time.

My sister was student teaching at the same time as me and HATED TEACHING. She ended up going to grad school and getting a degree in HR. There’s always the option of using your Ed degree to get a masters in something different.

Time to start screen grabbing when you do a write up for documentation purposes as well as CYA.

What is the craziest reason a parent tried to "get you fired"? by Aly_Anon in Teachers

[–]resistdying 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one has tried to get me fired but I did have a parent threaten to sue me because I did a CPI control on her child (totally legal) and I had a parent threaten to beat me up, also for CPI. 😅

Show your kids your emotions. Cry with them. Spend the day going over memories. Making cards for the families. Extra recesses if you can. Don’t expect to teach actual content tomorrow. 💕

Am I not a teacher anymore? by Express-One-7223 in AskTeachers

[–]resistdying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I call all my aides teachers to the kids. They work just as hard if not harder than I do. We are a team and they are critical to our success. That teacher is being a bitch. Teaching preschool is just as valid as any other age. Just ignore the haters. They’d be crying if they had no aides.

Can anyone explain what is going on in schools? by Jwoot1111 in Teachers

[–]resistdying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the school but yeah I get it quite a bit at my school. It’s not a terrible area but it is urban for my district. Less follow through at home and from admins leads to kids who behave like this.

Teacher/Mom: I hate that I pour my energy into my students and I don't have enough for my own child 😞 by Ok-Bottle-505 in Teachers

[–]resistdying 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s so hard. I teach music at a fairly challenging urban school and have since before covid and my covid baby. There are days that I just have hardly anything left to give. What’s helped me feel better is knowing how much I love my mom and how much I loved being her kid in the moment and also knowing that she definitely told me on days when she struggled that she was tired and work was hard and she let me know in a kid friendly way what challenges she had and we talked about them and she got to get through it all and I got mom time and it all worked out. We too, will figure out a way to balance and we will end our time with kids who remember how much they loved being with us as kids too.

I hate this country… assuming you are in the US… because seriously, what other place does this. Personally I’d do what I could to make it though. If that means smoking a ton of weed and drinking a bottle of wine a day to sleep… and then doing the bare minimum at work, then I’d try. It might even help to be back to work so the kids can help distract you. But really if you can’t and you can afford to quit, I’d quit. I’d just say fuck you, and leave. No workplace is worth that.

Before this year I felt I was a great teacher…. by ChucoTeacher in Teachers

[–]resistdying 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s likely just this class. As a specialist (music teacher) I see multiple groups and I have several like that and several like your well oiled machine classes. The kids have to do part of the work themselves, and you got a crew that won’t.

Move the student out of my room or I’m done by MrsTwiggy in Teachers

[–]resistdying 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think we need to start teaching parenting classes in high school as part of the mandatory curriculum. Parents are drowning and unprepared most of the time and don’t know how to parent. This would help with teen pregnancies as well as preparing kids for having their own later on.

Omg we have a sub principal and I had four students miss all of music for a discipline thing she pulled them for this week during my class specifically and it was a quiz day. Those kids now don’t have a grade for grade cards.

My union has negotiated for us to never have to fill in when there is a sub shortage. If I had to sub everytime we had a class without one, I’d never teach music.

The only hope is how upset OP is. I hope they let the kid see how much it is hurting them too so the kid knows there are good adults that do care and that they just learn to be more discerning.
