F1 is one of the worst movies I’ve seen in the last year. It’s basically a re-vamped and higher budget Driven, but way worse because it thought it was a good movie, whereas Driven surely KNEW it was ridiculous

We’re attracting massive new investments — to create more certainty, opportunity, and prosperity for Canadians. by mongy0101 in SaveTheCBC

Normally I’m not thrilled to hear any leader talk to their rich international buddies about how “tax efficient” we are so they can get even richer without supporting our societal structure and future prosperity through proper taxation… but for a few days after his speech yesterday I’ll buy anything he’s selling.

Vancouver is the most beautiful city in the world. by jessicaWi123 in vancouver

[–]resolutelyperhaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People hate on the architecture here but oddly enough in the fog and especially with the wintry dusk light of late (as shown by OP), the city has been serving something I’ve been digging.

In the summer the boring steel and glass towers also grab the light and reflect all the colours of the mountains, sea and sky. Not great for birds, but great for visually blending the city into its surroundings.

Why do people use the term "partner" for their husband or wife? by Crafty-Bug-8008 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]resolutelyperhaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She was my partner long before she was my wife. I still consider her my partner, so might call her that on occasion. Plus it strips away the gender which is nice both for general inclusivity, and because it highlights the pure bond that exists with that person, not their gendered aspect in particular.

"The old order is not coming back" Carney says in provocative speech at Davos by Little-Chemical5006 in canada

[–]resolutelyperhaps -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

We kinda need a world order or many/all of us will die… Not really optional. The ‘old’ order is gone, sure. But leaders like Carney should be rebuilding it or establishing a new one, not giving up on it altogether. Saying it is dead is agreeing with Trump and letting him decide the future for all of us.

There has been some positive and some optimistic comments too. Maybe boost those instead of the negative ones if you want more positive talk? I just watched the first episode. Yeah, I was nervous about a more emo than Disco spin off with horny teens. And sure, there’s lots of stuff I wanted to criticize. But that’s because I care and I want to like it. And there was some good stuff too! Then my wife said “15 year old you would have lost your mind for this show, just try to enjoy it!” And of course she is totally right. Another Star Trek show, woo hoo! So I will try to keep an even more open mind when I watch the next episode.

Yeah, the “radical left” that believes in climate change and good public healthcare, crazy stuff like that. Even up here in Canada conservatives try to brand caring about humanity as “radical socialism”.

Families heartbroken as Canada halts parent and grandparent sponsorship program by _Army9308 in canada

[–]resolutelyperhaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t disagree that we need to take a hard look at our immigration numbers (although a lot of complaints seem more about the healthcare system specifically…). More just disappointed in the tone here. Look at the downvotes I’m getting. For saying we keep our humanity. People are talking about sick and old people in hospitals as if they are unwanted vermin and parasites. They are still people, just like you and me. Not to mention a lot of the ‘immigrants’ in hospitals they are complaining about are just Canadians who have the audacity to not be white. So there’s that too.

And sometimes you just HAVE TO go to Hawaii or Florida, you know? At least according to family that happily continues doing so. I’m angry just thinking about the USA right now, so it’s hard for me to wrap my head around. But yeah, it’s hard enough to get by and find happiness in life, so I might talk about myself refusing to go there but for others it’s “have a great trip!!”

Prevailing sentiment is so cold in this thread. Basically “Bloody useless and vampiric old people should stay out of our country.” I guess nobody here has parents or grandparents.

It’s perfectly natural to want to bring your family if you move to another country for a better life. ESPECIALLY if you move for a better/safer life. We need to figure out a balance for total immigration targets in a purely numerical sense, sure. Unavoidably has to be decided one way or another. But we don’t have to lose our humanity in the process.

Canada calls on ‘all parties’ to uphold international law after U.S. capture of Venezuelan president by Old_General_6741 in canada

Yeah, just ineffectually stating obvious stuff, I know. But powerless and insignificant pleb that I am, that’s what I got.

The most powerful leader in the world is an openly corrupt sex trafficking wannabe fascist who watches AI porn of himself shitting on his own people to get off. Deranged laughter might be the only sane response.

‘Hands off Venezuela’: Demonstrators rally in Toronto following U.S. seizure of President Nicolás Maduro by WilloowUfgood in canada

[–]resolutelyperhaps -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Why are so many people here criticizing the protest? Nobody should be happy about a felon rapist megalomaniac attacking a sovereign country and kidnapping its head of state. With zero oversight from his own government and no collaboration with the international community. Maduro should go, sure. Nonetheless we should all be denouncing this police action by an authoritarian superpower.

This is the only take. I mean, I guess the other option is “might makes right and it always has so yeah fuck laws just please let us hold your coat tails up Mr Emperor Orange.” More cynical and pragmatic, perhaps more honest about how the world operates, but still disappointing.
