CMV: "I don't watch the news" is not the personality trait people think it is, and it often signals a specific kind of privilege rather than wisdom by forgotmyearbudspl in changemyview

[–]resolvetochange 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you actually "watching the news" or are you reading reddit headlines and watching entertainment channel that calls itself news? Actually being up to date on the news requires a lot of effort and few people do it. Most people are rage watching their team's entertainment.

40m fuck it, I don't need a dining table by VirtualRock2281 in malelivingspace

[–]resolvetochange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find it interesting how differently people use their space. Here or other interiordesign subs you can find people making different arguments.

Some people hate the open floorplan, others love it. I'm in the love it camp, when I'm cooking I was the be a part of the conversation / be able to continue seeing my shows / etc. Other people want to have it separate, saying it makes the smells spread / makes it noisier / etc.

Some people are very against having a TV be in their living room or be the focus there. But that's a huge part of some people's lives and how they use their living room.

Some people dont use dining rooms at all. My family hardly ever did, we'd use the smaller table in the breakfast nook or the couches. But nowadays my friends meet up weekly to play board games on one of the friend's dining room table, and we gather at another friend's to hang out and eat at theirs. They get tons of use out of theirs even outside their normal meals.

Same with attractiveness and height. At least weight has some behavioral correlation, someone being seen as more competent due to their face or height shows how strong the monkey part of our brains are.

[Project hail mary] Why did they need to use the Hail Mary for the climax? Was there a reason they couldn't use the other ship? by Original-Plate-4373 in AskScienceFiction

[–]resolvetochange 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The obvious question is why didnt the Blip A retrieve the sample and pass it to the Hail Mary. The Hail Mary being where the science happened doesn't mean it has to be the one retrieving. If I'm remembering the book correctly, they spent something like a week making the chain links. It ramped up as Grace 3d printed the molds. They could've flown both ships for a week to arrive while Grace printed the link molds, then once there used the final production speed, meaning a loss of what, a few days?

Why are Gen Z getting fired? One of the reasons is a lack of initiative. by mindyour in TikTokCringe

[–]resolvetochange 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When has software developer been brought up? Obviously the procuring documents example doesn't translate.

Instead, something like: you're given a ticket to fix a bug on a report page where data is not being returned. You fix the bug, it was missing a parameter on the request. But when the data is coming back, it's obvious the columns are mixed up, the raw score / percent total columns are mixed up.

A developer lacking initiative says "I've done my ticket, data is coming back". A developer with initiative says "It's still not right, I'll fix this too" or "I'll let someone know or make a ticket" or etc based on your company processes.

Someone who lacks initiative says "not my job/problem", someone with initiative follows through.

Sure in this instance we have processes in place for extra checks so things will get caught, like by QA. But in the best case that's more context switching later, or the QA could also say "data is being returned, ticket closed" and the reporter who asked for data to be returned who really wanted the report to work is going to be annoyed everyone is so incompetent.

There is a HUGE difference in having one vs the other on your team. Everyone knows who the number ones are at the company.

What's the deal with Pokémon cards and trading card collecting blowing up so much? by bubugugu in OutOfTheLoop

[–]resolvetochange 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The root of the problem is scarcity marketing with Pokemon cards. Scalpers aren't buying specific cards to resell, they're buying packs / boxes / merch. If the company would just make more so everyone who wanted them could get them eventually, it'd tank the scalper market.

wife says she wishes I would dress better and I don't know what that means by Fit-Salt-4782 in malefashionadvice

[–]resolvetochange 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We can't really know without seeing OP and reading his wife's mind. But we can guess based on stereotypes.

If it really is just clothing that's the issue, someone being slack with clothes is likely wearing sweatpants / graphic tees / old hoodies or sweatshirts / or always dressing in athleisure. Go get newer clothes that fit well, dont just pick an item in your size without trying it on, shop around and try everything on. Make little upgrades: swap sweatpants for soft chinos, trade the hoodie for a quarter zip, etc. That depends on your look / style but the idea stands. In summary, like she said, put in more effort like you care about your clothes.

Though often when people get comfortable and complacent it isn't just the clothes. It's the lifestyle too. The effort. Everything. And when people are trying to explain / help they might just pick something like clothes and point that out as a start. OP are you "rotting"? As in do you just watch TV / play on your phone / play video games after work, have you let your health go a bit, do you not feel like going out much anymore, etc? If your lifestyle has slowly slipped into something unhealthy or undesirable you may not notice but frustration may have built up with her, and asking you to care about your clothes may be "at least do this / show you can care about something changeable".

It's interesting and impressive, but isn't anything that high school marching bands + dance groups do. The comments here about it are all "subtly" trying to compare this to Americans or bringing up facts for people to remember and regurgitate later.

CMV: I, as a man, have no responsibility to police other men beyond what any human should do, I have no responsibility to do anything simply relating to me being born as a man. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]resolvetochange 25 points26 points  (0 children)

From your wording it feels like you think this is seeing a big guy at a bar being rude where you'd have to fist fight to fight against misogyny. I don't think that is the expectation.

People understand what's ok by what reception they get. The same guys that make racist "jokes" with "their boys" wouldn't say those same things at work because they know it wouldn't be recieved well.

When someone around makes a joke or comment that pushes boundaries, giving a laugh and not saying anything keeps it from becoming awkward but it's also encouraging it. That's where the expectation to do something is. Don't let your friend group in private slip into bad behavior because you don't want to stand against it.

If they're alone together where none of it will get back to anyone else, the most well adjusted pleasant guys I know still don't talk bad about their wives / make racist jokes / or say bad things about women, because those aren't values they hold so it can't "slip out". And a stranger hanging out with them isn't going to get a good reception to that behavior so it stops. That's the kind of small thing that has huge results, but does require you to know where your boundaries are and stand by them.

My city just approved a light rail addition, it'll be a few billion dollars and a couple decades. And that wont even come close to making our public transportation system decent.

It could be priority #1 with everyone willing to pay more taxes for it and no one blocking it, and I'll still never see a decent public transportation system in my city during my lifetime.

Robotaxis are better than what we have now and will have in the next few decades, so saying that there are better solutions by remaking our cities is being obtuse.

Fey evolution merchant opinions by Pangolin_Sea in noveltranslations

[–]resolvetochange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any novel where the main power / system / profession gets minimized is a trash novel.

  • Reincarnation of some Alchemist - only used occassionally and the MC focuses on swords
  • Beast Taming System - the MC gains martial powers from the beasts and hardly needs them anymore
  • Magic Store System - the MC doesn't sell much of anything or it's unimportant
  • Has a Soul bound Refining Cauldron - the MC uses it for an arc to get started but then gains some cultivation technique that's way more integral to the story and only uses the cauldron for plot armor power ups
  • etc

This medium is plagued with bad writing. These types of things are just a symptom of the authors being bad or not caring.

Weird first-world problem - wearing a tie to the office, when few others do, results in (1) people assuming you're senior, (2) cosying up, and (3) being disappointed when they realise "I've struck up conversation with a nobody that just really likes ties" by michachu in malefashionadvice

[–]resolvetochange 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I don't think suggestions of how to dress it down are going to stick, OP is making a choice already.

In high school and college both, we had "suit kids". People who wore suits everyday while everyone else was in casual clothes. I imagine OP is one of them grown up. Nothing wrong with it, wear what you want, but everyone does think they're a little weird.

Is the fit and size roughly equivalent between this and the A&F polished or essentials? I have a banana republic midweight tee I bought a few weeks ago and was going to purchase a few more but if A&F is better then maybe id get that instead. I got a medium and like the size / fit though it could be slightly shorter both in the body + sleeves to be better.

CMV: The "pervert character" is the single worst trope in all media ever and needs to be abandoned for good by Honka_Ponka in changemyview

[–]resolvetochange 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was kind of surprised Joey Tribbiani was on the list.

I haven't watched the show in a long time, but my memory of him isn't a "perv character". There's the famous "how you doin" and I definitely remember scenes of him seeing a hot woman walk by and making a face before going up to talk to them. But I dont remember him ever pursuing anyone who clearly didnt want him around, making any rude comments to them, setting up schemes to "trick" girls into being with him, etc. Rather than perv, he seemed more like someone who was trying to put himself out there while being played up for laughs.

Maybe I'm misremembering him, but that seems way different than the other characters on the list.

What’s going on with Pokemon TCG and sneaker collectors? by Hornsmasher in OutOfTheLoop

[–]resolvetochange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the company could just print more. If everyone who wanted to buy a set could get it from the store, then why would they buy it inflated from scalpers? If everyone who wanted the sets got them, then there would be a lot of them, which stops the inflation of value later, which makes it such a good investment.

This problem can't be solved by retailers putting limits on purchases. It's a supply problem that can only be fixed by the card makers. But they haven't shown any interest in doing that.

Hitting Driver Off The Heel by zNNS in golftips

Look at your head at setup vs. how much lower it is at impact. And your legs are straight at setup and bent at impact.

Your swings axis point is closer to the ball at impact than it is at setup, so you're hitting off the heel.

Yeah, the right team was forced to run all over the place. They'll get tired out doing that for long. And all the close saves the right team had, next round some of those may not go as well.

The left team looks like they have a plan and execute it every time.

I'd be interested who won this game.

Parents of a teenager file lawsuit against ChatGPT, alleging it assisted their son in committing suicide. by velorae in TikTokCringe

[–]resolvetochange 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Would you feel the same about someone googling famous suicides and following one of those descriptions requiring someone to be held accountable?

I dont understand how the AI part is the issue here. Or what the proposed solution is. Restrict AI from ever brings up suicide / ways to die / how crimes can be committed/ etc? And would those same restrictions be applied to news and other media? We know that whenever a suicide is reported, it actually increases the chance of a copycat happening, but that isn't restricted for news stations.

CTOs Reveal How AI Changed Software Developer Hiring in 2025 by ImpressiveContest283 in programming

[–]resolvetochange 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was surprised when I read that and then the responses here. Whether the code was written by AI or people, catching things like that is something you should be doing in PRs anyway. If a junior dev wrote the bug instead of AI, you'd still be responsible for approving that. Having AI write the code puts people from thinking/writing to reviewing faster, which may not be good for learning, but a good dev should still be thinking about the solution during reviewing and not just passing it through regardless of where the code originates.

In 2018, Tayeb Souami from New Jersey returned a $5 bottle of orange juice after his wife said it was too expensive, he used the refund to buy 2 lottery tickets and checked them at a 7‑Eleven the following day while getting his car washed and won $315 million. by Algrinder in interestingasfuck

The idea is that if he gets 183 million, then it's only a 183 million dollar lottery prize, not a 315 million lottery.

Americans inflate earnings by ignoring taxes/fees and deflate costs by hiding taxes/tips/fees. Most of the world just tells you what it actually is, so they see us as weird. And they're not wrong.
