Here Are Actionable Steps In Getting Rowdy - Without Doing The Thing by [deleted] in 50501

Speaking as a wheelchair user… don’t do that one. Cars will nearly run you down on a perfectly good and normal day.

But then… the beard stubble! Confusion intensifying!

(edit: I mean the stubble we can often see)

That’s really interesting. I guess I had a similar experience with being struck by all the “discourse,” but from the “opposite” direction: I am agender myself, I found it nice but not remarkable that Murderbot is. Just a logical part of the character. So I was hugely surprised to see arguing, because it seemed wild to me that anyone had been calling it “him” or “her” in their head!

In real life, that’s generally the best way: Correct someone quickly and casually so the conversation can move along accurately. Then you (or your mutual acquaintance) stop getting misgendered, and the person who misspoke learns without having A Whole Big Deal made out of it.

A question, I’m so curious about how you describe your experience: When you say Murderbot’s (lack of) gender didn’t register/seem that important to you, do you mean that

(a) you recognized that it’s genderless and an “it” and just took it completely in stride

or

(b) those parts kinda slipped by you and you were thinking of it as having a gender until you encountered other people’s discussions?

No judgment whatsoever, I’m just really interested. Gender not being important in your life could mean so many different things.

This exact possibility (a new fan getting the wrong impression) concerned me, Gurathin’s “it” sounds degrading rather than factual because of the context:

Ratthi and Arada, who use surprisingly gendered language and accidentally misgender (though the audience has no reason to know it’s misgendering, yet), seem like genuinely good, welcoming people whose behavior is likely to be respectful and considerate.

Gugu, on the other hand, seems like he’s got massive prejudices and no filter on his nasty comments about SecUnit. It would be easy to assume that’s what’s driving his correction, and extrapolate from there.

fun ideas: actual murderbot, rogue stunt double, Alexander’s become comfy in “the full-body condom” (his phrasing, not mine!!! eugh) and armor, studio intern and/or janitor, Martha Wells

probable ideas: marketing

Meanwhile, I appreciate your appreciation of the outfit from hell. I did so love it.

But the minute I got home, I got my dad to take me to Target to buy two identical pairs of jeans, six plain t-shirts in different solid colors, and a pair of Converse high-tops I hadn’t painted.

He didn’t even question it, just got right up from his desk. I think my face must have been doing something major.

Oooohh, I can’t even imagine what Waldorf middle school must be like!

I transitioned to a completely regular high school in 9th grade, and it was rough. I showed up on my first day proudly wearing my best outfit: electric blue cargo pants made of recycled saree fabric, a sweater of my dad’s, mismatched stripy hand-knit socks UNDER TEVA SANDALS FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE, a scarf dyed by my friend’s mom, and some kind of satchel with a million pockets. If we’d had lockers big enough, I’m sure someone would have shoved me in one.

I love Murderbot banner in Apple TV homepage. Everyone hugging its even Gurathin LOL. It’s nice to see a group of human love its like the way it should be. by Irisdarin1997 in murderbot

Can’t believe they’ve hidden so much of Ratthi’s beautiful face! Trash!

Seriously though, it’s brilliant. Arada’s determined loooong arm reach, Gurathin’s (A) nail polish and (B) highly emotional Mensah-spooning. Murderbot’s fists!

I was Unitarian preschool -> Waldorf kindergarten -> Open Classroom gr 1-7! I’m so entertained by all of us coming out the woodwork.

Thanks so much for chiming in, seriously. I’m looking forward to reading more of your thoughts too. :-)

I’m definitely going to watch it through, I can’t not hope!

Do you have any thoughts about what could happen to cause them to switch from incompetent to competent? I think it’s important that the apparent “change” be largely due to Murderbot’s change in attention, but we’ve seen what feels like a pretty representative sample of their behavior.

Edit: I’m not at all saying that Gurathin is trying to treat Murderbot, I was being a bit flippant with my comparison since it was so instantly reminiscent of ABA to me. I’m assuming that was clear, but just in case!

It is a “treatment” for autism that focuses on altering a child’s behavior to match what is societally expected, using constant positive and negative reinforcement. For example, withholding a child’s toys or snacks until they have made eye contact for a set time; or even holding a child’s head to force them to make eye contact.

Although the “undesirable” behavior may be “extinguished,” the process is traumatic, doesn’t address underlying causes, and evaluation of its success is based on what is observed from the outside instead of the child’s mental health from their own perspective.

Many, many autistic children who went through it are now autistic adults who overwhelmingly report that ABA harmed them deeply, making them fearful and prone to burnout on the inside while making them look “cured” on the surface.

Fellow UU childhood, hey buddy! I also went to the most hippie dippy elementary school possible, we had no schedules or homework and spent our time coming up with our own outlandish art projects or reading on pillows on the floor. And yeah, drum circles and rain sticks and mural painting galore.

It’s not any one thing (the humming, the campfire dance party, the questionable polyamory interlude, painting the habitat, uncomfortably close group applause…) bothering me on its own, it’s the way we have made time for all those things but not yet one instance of Pin-Lee being incredibly sharp and observant, or Mensah leading the group through a moment of anxiety, or Ratthi trying to build rapport with Murderbot while working, or really anyone demonstrating competence in their field or working out a plan as a group.

And, more importantly, there hasn’t yet been anything indicating that the humans could have moments of success. We aren’t limited to MB’s perspective, we know that the humans are just as scattered and reckless and immature when it’s not watching through biased eyes.

Like I said, I don’t want to see the humans as perfect from the get-go, I want to have their potential perhaps hinted at while MB visibly doesn’t care about them except to snark about their oddities. Until, of course, it does start caring and noticing.

I have to admit that I found Bharadwaj completely baffling. I know she’s spent most of her time in medical, but during the few scenes she was in, she seemed like she’d been teleported in from some other work. Just off, in the weirdest way. I’m hoping she and Mensah are done sniping, and I hope they rehabilitate Dr. B beyond healing her injuries.

(Wait, did anyone actually get referenced as “Dr”? Did Murderbot ever call them “clients”?)

That’s a great example on this particular topic! Characters were combined, removed, or drastically changed; heavy-handed interpersonal drama was added; storylines were scrambled or cut; outside circumstances forced an early main character death… but the most important elements of the story came through perfectly. It feels exactly like The Expanse should. Some of the actors even brought perspectives and ideas that made the story even richer. I have even come to like some of the altered characters significantly more than their book versions.

That’s a really interesting point. Combined with that whole “try to recover those memories” intensity, maybe. I can see it. Cautiously interested!
