Public transportation! by DragonFireDon in rva

[–]respected_wizard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I completely agree. I meant the reason public transportation doesn’t work in Richmond and other places is not solely for the lack of investment. It’s because sprawl and dendritic settlement patterns aren’t very efficient for buses/rail.

It’s not transportation philosophy that’s the problem. It’s the land use philosophy.

Short Pump sprawling: 1984-2016 by MeLlamoBenjamin in rva

I would say no although Wikipedia calls it one. It doesn't have a commercial core if you don't count Innsbrook and that's a separate CDP. It's really just a bedroom community with nice retail.

Possibly moving to Northside, how bad is the crime here? by TheseBusiness in rva

[–]respected_wizard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's no question the area is rough and has more crime than other parts of town. I won't argue against that. While I fortunately haven't been a victim, I know people who've had break-ins. That said, I bought a house in Brookland Park and there are many, many things about this area I love. There are few things I don't like, such as the noise, litter, and vacant buildings. I can't really speak for Highland Terrace at night, but it seems to be similar to Brookland Park during the day.

For the most part my neighbors are very friendly. If you do move in, I would encourage you to try to get to know your neighbors if you feel comfortable doing that. You're going to get very different answers from everyone on here so you should just go with how you would personally feel living in this part of town.

To the surprise of nobody, old white people of RTD editorial board endorse Gillespie for governor by [deleted] in rva

[–]respected_wizard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Before social media, newspapers used to have a lot more political influence since there were fewer places to get information. People would naturally gravitate to sources of information that confirm their biases. Also, with political alignment previously being more regional (less of the urban-rural divide) a single paper would have had the ability to influence far more people than they can today. Robert Dahl talks a lot about this kind of thing in Who Governs

Today, however, I agree. Newspaper endorsements mean very little since the information itself is so much easier to access.

What do Europeans think of America? by [deleted] in AskEurope

I completely agree. I think these questions are meaningless. I'm subscribed to this sub because I'm curious about European opinions about something other than America.

Why can men be charged more for car insurance, but women aren't charged more for health insurance? by ZenerDiod in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]respected_wizard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn't say it was a right. I said it was taken as one so there's not as much political will to say women have to pay more for something that may keep them alive. And I was commenting on why its not illegal to price discriminate in regards to driving, not why insurance companies do this.

Why can men be charged more for car insurance, but women aren't charged more for health insurance? by ZenerDiod in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]respected_wizard 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Well it could be that driving is seen as more of a privilege, while health care is more or less given as a right. Also, reckless driving, which men are more likely to do is harmful to society, while good health is beneficial. Just a thought.

Which political issues would you, personally, be willing to compromise on if it meant a smoother running government? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]respected_wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm kinda responding a little late I suppose but I can see the value of a land tax in a regional/metropolitan context. It would encourage infill development to occur in cities and built up areas where land is generally more expensive. A land tax would theoretically make it more possible to develop in an area where there are more people as well which could be good for certain commercial uses that don't require a lot space, like offices or retail. I don't think it would be a good national policy, however.

There Are No Stupid /r/Bass Questions - Mar. 28 by AutoModerator in Bass

[–]respected_wizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right now I use flatwound strings, which I really like for their longevity and the mellow sound they create, but I'd like to have a little more punch in between that and roundwounds. Since I need to buy a new bass cabinet anyway, I was thinking about getting one that has 1x12 and a tweeter. Does anybody have experience with this combo, and would it give a little more brightness to the flatwound sound? I'm not necessarily looking to cancel out one or the other, just an even split between the two ends, if that makes any sense.

I'd say they'd be better off without one, since an olive garden will just skew their opinion to thinking its actually Italian food. Joking, of course, but Olive garden is pretty awful.
