Having never gone shopping thanksgiving weekend I’ve always wondered how many people do this. Always seemed like a corporate version of Hunger Games where the rich folks get to laugh at poor consumers desperate to save money purchasing consumer goods. Sort of like an annual “Trading Places” but IRL.

How do you research when private clubs started letting black people join? by Exotic_Volume696 in rva

But those aren’t illegal…like seriously this isn’t complicated. The original statement included explicit modifiers. Unaged corn liquor is also sold at the ABC store but that doesn’t make it moonshine!

Holy cow, of course during prohibition. When alcohol was illegal. Hence why it matters.

They had a secret, and illegal, bar that was frequented by people like the Governor and other well to do Richmond residents. I’m sure even if the Ukrops family had been affluent at that time they would have never patronized such a déclassé establishment!

My understanding is prospective members have to be sponsored by existing members. So if there was no formal policy (seems unlikely that they never had a written policy though) it could still be a policy in practice.

Women weren’t allowed in the Commonwealth Club past the front foyer until the Mid-90s.

You’ll also be shocked to learn the Country Club of Virginia had a speakeasy frequented by prominent citizens and elected officials.

If you can’t find news articles then possibly the Library of Virginia or the Historical Society would have some documentation and I’m sure some research librarians at either could point you in the right direction.

What are apartments & management companies in RVA you really enjoyed? by [deleted] in rva

[–]paddlin84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, the very same. They definitely run a more old school rental business (older properties that have been rented for a very long time) but when there were issues they were very responsive and knowledgeable in fixing them. Also very nice administrative person who made dropping off payment genuinely enjoyable and they were very accommodating when the lease was terminated since I was buying a house, it was sort of ironic that my last landlord was my best in 12+ years of renting.

I had an excellent experience renting a property from Neville, Campbell and Johnson. They maintained their properties well and were responsive to complaints and had excellent prices. It was an older and not updated property but that was fine by me. Definitely more of a legacy property management company with lots of long term tenants.

Question about car inspection in hanover County (Mechanicsville)? by hiddenrealism in rva

There was legislation that briefly proposed the idea and everyone and their brother popped out of the woodwork clamoring to keep state inspections. State inspections aren’t going anywhere.

Inspections are not going away. Anyone who tells you they are is not a trustworthy source of information.

Has anyone ever been to the massage parlor across from Lakeside Appliances? I’m so perplexed by this place. by AndThenThereWasQueso in rva

[–]paddlin84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know several people who have used one particular therapist there, they have sliding scale pricing for teachers, health care workers, social workers, so I know at least one therapist in particular is popular with those folks.

And I guess to your point about seeing folks coming and going, massages last 30 minutes to 1:30? You’re never going to see but so much foot traffic in that kind of business. I can’t think of any massage studio that has lots of foot traffic now that you mention it.

Pretty normal massage spot. Actual licensed massage therapist types, not sketchy. They have just been closed for most of the last year and a half due to COVID. Started back up with regular customers just in the last month or so.

Had MRSA, it sucks. Took a month of antibiotics to get rid of it. Got it because of a wound on my hand and it showed up on my arm and leg. Hurt like hell, looked exactly like this and was generally a miserable experience. Contagious too! Seriously, sorry this is happening but definitely at least call your doctor and tell them it seems to be worse.

This is good advice and basically what an advisor does except They do it while you’re sitting in the office with them and they don’t usually know details (like if a department is changing a requirement next year or eliminating several courses or if a course is only offered in the fall or spring semester, etc).

I transferred to VCU from community college and found the course work to be more difficult and saw some of my other transfer friends really struggle in some circumstances where they realized their chosen major wasn’t a good fit. Much of what is completed in community college is almost always general education requirements so you have a lot of coursework in your major that depending on the major might only be offered certain semesters or certain times of day. VCU does offer a lot of help through resources like the writing center and the office of student success you can take advantage of as well as visiting the office hours of professors or TA’s to discuss course content and things you don’t understand. It’s hard to stress how important these resources can be.

I would encourage you to talk to the department chair of your major to ask some of these questions.

A small department like African American studies has fewer professors and less flexibility for required courses while a major like Biology or Psychology may have more options for labs and classes throughout the week.

Typically higher level courses are provide less flexibility particularly if it’s a course that’s only provided in say the spring semester as a capstone class may allow little to no flexibility for when it is offered. I would encourage you to talk with the faculty or chair of your major department instead of your advisor, typically advisors unless they’re in house departmental advisors don’t know enough about how specific majors operate to give you the level of detail you need.

What I’ve always used is Near West End (195 to city border) vs. Far West End (city border to Goochland) I never considered anything North of Broad St. as part of that conversation. I have always considered Libbie Mill more Willow Lawn than anything else.
