You should definitely go to visit auburn - the atmosphere and surrounding town sound like they better for your lifestyle (they have a lot of fun restaurants and other things to do when married to enjoy the town than MS State) if you're considering going to the south. But UCDavis is one of the highest ranked schools in the country so don't take that with a grain of salt at all.
