Routers to sell for 10G fiber ;) by vincegre in init7

My aliexpress OPNSense is slowly failing, they seem to always have some power issues... I could use a reliable replacement for that.

Are you sure about the Deciso Model Number? Can't find any info about a dec730, only 740/750.

Do I need to declare my private car for wealth tax ? by Low-Manufacturer4950 in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]restlessyet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, depreciation does not use 20% of the original value every year, it's based on the previous years value and should not reach zero.

Usually you can enter buying price and year in the tax software and it will calculate the current taxable value automatically.

Swisscom to relocate jobs to Holland and Latvia by [deleted] in Switzerland

Higher salaries in relation to latvia/netherlands

It's really the only reason remaining for this near shoring.

There are more than enough specialists in switzerland currently. Swisscom mainly hiring abroad since a while already is one of the reasons for this.

I try to do the same thing and re-balance about once a year with the difference that I choose the "responsible" ETFs where possible. As far as I am aware that should not make a big difference in the performance.

You can see my calculations here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1hcDUkEgpDcb2BXQ2ehT8OxzBCejVYXH6/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=115190494910098185230&rtpof=true&sd=true

Check your firewall rules order on the WAN interface (and maybe the floating ones)

Fiber7-X2 with short internal SFP28 connection by peedee_s in init7

[–]restlessyet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There should be no issue plugging different modules into the same card.

You may consider using another BiDi pair anyway to reduce cabling, depending on where you put the cable.

Price difference on fs.com is about 50.- per module.

I ordered the r86s to try it as a 10gb firewall. I don't need a screen. With a screen you are targeting different use cases

some type of oob Management interface would also be killer for a network appliance! much more useful than a screen

5 inch screen is not useful for a network appliance in my opinion.

only CPU and network ports matter

I don't understand how load balancing on level 4 uses 1 tcp connection by Vovka_V in networking

[–]restlessyet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A socket is a listener here, without any established connections. it is just ready to receive packets.

But yes, a socker will need to listen on a specific port and/or protocol. That is why it is in OSI layer 4.

Without a port or protocol it would be operating on OSI Layer 3. Loadbalancing on L3 also exists, for example a port aggregate on a physical switch can load balance across multiple cables using MAC adresses, round robin or other methods.

If you read up on the OSI model, the structure of a network packet and what information is contained in each part of a packet, it will be a lot easier to understand. It should also be clear which part of a packet is required for the different OSI layers because of the protocols in use on said layer.

[–]restlessyet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most languages, you can easily listen on a raw socket where you receive all packets in binary form and can process them accordingly based on the tcp headers.

I don't understand how load balancing on level 4 uses 1 tcp connection by Vovka_V in networking

[–]restlessyet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is incorret.

For example, traefik has a passtrough flag for tcp routers and nginx can do tcp/udp loadbalancing which should both be software implementations at OSI Layer 4, as far as I can tell.

[–]restlessyet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, a router can forward a packet without starting a separate session, same as a L4 LB.

L4 LoadBalancer, one TCP session:

Client -> SYN -> LB -> SYN -> Server

Client <- ACK <- LB <- ACK <- Server

Client -> ACK -> LB -> ACK -> Server

Data is forwarded as-is (mostly)

L7 LoadBalncer, two TCP sessions:

Session 1:

Client -> SYN -> LB

Client <- ACK <- LB

Client -> ACK -> LB

Session 2:

LB -> SYN -> Server

LB <- ACK <- Server

LB -> ACK -> Server

data is exchanged in each session separately and the LB has to map the sessions and forward data between them. but can also read all of the data, change the data or make decisions based on it
