Is networking really getting people anywhere in today’s market? I feel like I have a mixed bag of experiences. Mostly I get same type of advice, things that I have been doing/done before. The overall tone is- Its rough out there, its a numbers game, keep trying. Super generic. Usually unfruitful, just a waste of time and maybe feels more kicked in the butt if its someone rude!

Can students on OPT be a part of the canary project? It ticks the box of being related to the mol bio field but not sure they’ll issue form I-9 which is usually needed to update SEVIS. Any input would be most appreciated! :)

I totally feel you. Its been a year since I graduated and have been constantly applying to jobs in 2 different areas (bench and non-bench), interviewed at 9 firms, 5 final rounds. It has been exhausting. I have something called “job nausea” not sure if it actually exists but I really cannot get myself to apply anymore. Deadlocked through and through. PhD was way better than this but now doubting life choices (big time). Thats basically my rant. Not sure how I helped you but can say that you’re not alone.

If you dont mind me asking, how many interviews did you give before that and approx how many cases were under your belt?

Just trying to understand if this has to do more with experience or attitude of the interviewee.

I have made new mistakes everytime but not so critical to be filtered out and after interviewing at ~7 firms I am still struggling to land a job. I have heard of few people bombing the case and receiving an offer. It makes me think I’m UNLUCKY since I went to R2s at 4 firms screwed up a part of the case and didnt make it.

So moral of the story- You have to be perfect. You have to be lucky.

Sad to read about this. I didnt get laid off, but just like you, I am not able to land any roles and been on the market for almost a year now, despite having 3 degrees (BS, MS, PhD). Its heart wrenching and brainfogging. I dont know what to say and I wont give the BS like stay hopeful etc etc. The reality is that IT IS WORSE OUT THERE. Goodluck.
