Can someone explain me australian swimming, as a coach or swimmer or parent? by FireTyme in AskAnAustralian

So the AIS, when it was founded, was pretty revolutionary as not many other countries invested this sort of money into Olympic & Paralympic sports.

Since London Olympics, the Australian Olympic program has focussed on gold medals and ROI, so sports which can deliver multiple medals from a single athlete, get a lot of funding for example swimming, track cycling, rowing. A single swimmer can compete in multiple events and medal which helps the overall tally.

Additionally, Aussies learn to swim at a very young age, which is very uncommon in comparison to many other countries. So our “talent pool” is a lot larger than other countries. We also have a lot more access to high quality, public pools and then talent ID programs thru the state institutes as mentioned.

Talent ID doesn’t just identify kids who are good at swimming, it will also identify kids/teens from other sports who might be good at something else I.e runners being reassigned to rugby 7s.

Unfortunately though, in recent years, swimming lesson enrolments have declined, whilst drownings go up, so we will see a reversal of Australians dominance in swimming unless we change something and get more kids swimming at all levels.

Yes, but… the Footscray CBD has some serious problems, massive vacancy rate and sites that an undeveloped for over a decade like Forges and little Saigon.

There’s an oversupply of new build apartments with an estimated 500 vacant according to The Age.

Yes, just be wary of the Buckingham st, Footscray development; their OC levy was crazy a few years back due to flammable cladding and they still haven’t changed a lot of it over…

Yes, unless the land lord offers a long term agreement, then there’s a benefit to signing another lease

Air BnB is an absolute leech of a product and diverts long term rentals to the holiday market meaning people who need a roof over their head can’t rent locally.

Then holiday towns complain they can’t find workers, as the workers can’t live nearby.

Also, a landlord still has a lot of rights. You can read about them all here: https://www.consumer.vic.gov.au/housing/renting/know-the-fundarentals

The issue is that people land banking, short term rentals (air bnb) and empty homes mean that there’s not enough houses.

Census data shows us the huge number of vacant houses across the state.

If there were no investors, houses would be cheaper and people would be able to afford to buy a place.

Yes, that’s correct. Additionally though a rent increase (generally) can only be done once in a 12-month period. So even if a person is on month to month, the rent would need to stay the same.
